Travel sick child - what worked for you?

Hi

My DD suffers terribly from motion sickness and will almost always vomit when on a journey that’ll take longer than 20 minutes. We have a trip planned this weekend which is just over an hour long drive and I wanted to know what worked for your kids? What can I get to make this a smooth ride for her? Thanks

Sick bands. Worked for years for pre teen /teen dc. No screens in the car and limited sweets and drinks. We play a lot of eye spy! Keeps them looking out not down!

Marmite27 · 29/05/2022 21:39

Last time mine were travel sick was on a very rough ferry crossing.

cold water, ritz crackers and chupa chup lollies did the trick.

nearlyspringyay · 29/05/2022 21:45

Sick bands or tablets

NeedAHoll · 29/05/2022 21:46

@nearlyspringyay any suggestions on what are the most effective tablets?

NeedAHoll · 29/05/2022 21:47

@Onemoresleeptogonow I’ll get sick bands, she has very thin wrists though. I want to get the most effective chewable tablets also if you know of any?

ProclivityForPyrotechnics · 29/05/2022 21:47

@NeedAHoll phenergan is amazing

piratehugs · 29/05/2022 21:48

Kwells if over the age of 4. Only recently realised they existed after years of cleaning up vomit. Not a single incident since.

stanfi · 29/05/2022 21:48

Medication and sitting in the front seat

RuthW · 29/05/2022 21:49

Travel bands. I have you wear them if going further than 45 mins. Fabulous things.

Tablets
have tried sturgeon I think they’re called, or boots own. Children under 12 it’s one tablet and they’re only small. 6yo chews it no problem washed down with a bit of water or while she’s having a yogurt. She’s happy to take it because she knows it will stop her throwing up.
not using a tablet/watching a film in the car also helps

When I was a child I used to take Sea Legs. I've Googled and I think they've changed name now.

RandomMess · 29/05/2022 21:50

Following because I had to vomit on a train recently 🤦🏼‍♀️

LorisSlow · 29/05/2022 21:51

Travel sickness tablets the only thing that works for my kids - does make them a bit drowsy and moody but it's 100% better than being sick!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/05/2022 21:51

Opening windows (just briefly on the motorway!) Helped a lot. As did sitting her in the front.

It was partly psychological for my DD though... we think we've just managed to break it. It was only on particular journeys, and she would obsess over the thought of it when she knew the journey was coming up.

Beketaten · 29/05/2022 21:54

I was travel sick a lot as a child, and the pills didn't work for me. Was never sick at night though, if that's an option for your journey.

IDontDrinkTea · 29/05/2022 21:54

How old are they? My child would vomit every time until we stopped them being in a rear facing car seat and faced them forward
(obviously this doesn’t help if you’re talking about a teen not a toddler)

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 29/05/2022 21:55

kwells all the way and they are chewable now!

user1474315215 · 29/05/2022 21:56

Stugeron worked for mine. They didn't like the taste so we crushed them and mixed in yoghurt.

PeaceLily2000 · 29/05/2022 21:57

I was the car sick child - nothing really worked in terms of medication or bands but sitting in the front helped and always being prepared with a sick bucket to hand so it wasn't a big deal if I was sick.
My mum just used a big margarine tub with a carrier bag liner which could be refreshed as needed.
Not ideal but if it's going to happen, best to be ready for it.

jumpbounce · 29/05/2022 21:58

I have a DC the same can't travel 10 minutes without being sick. We use kwells kids regularly and they have always worked! Didn't seem to make DC drowsy either they would maybe have a little nap on a longer journey but apart from that no problems. Not certain of the age you can use them we've been using them since 4 year old but that could possibly be the youngest.

NeedAHoll · 29/05/2022 22:01

You all are so helpful honestly thank you so much, I’m going to go for Kwells but love the idea about the margarine tub @PeaceLily2000 and will take that along too

stripeymonster · 29/05/2022 22:05

Stugeron are much more effective than Kwells in my experience. All three of my kids get very travel sick - but rarely ever with Stugeron. Although it can make them a little sleepy.

NeedAHoll · 29/05/2022 22:08

@stripeymonster is stugeron chewable?

jessyjo2 · 29/05/2022 22:10

Kids kwells seem to do the trick for my boys.

MarthanotMarfa · 29/05/2022 22:19

Changed our car! Our low Volvo estate was the culprit and as long as not looking down on a screen for hours the problem improved.
