Travel sick child - what worked for you?

Hi

My DD suffers terribly from motion sickness and will almost always vomit when on a journey that’ll take longer than 20 minutes. We have a trip planned this weekend which is just over an hour long drive and I wanted to know what worked for your kids? What can I get to make this a smooth ride for her? Thanks

Phenergan, but it’s prescription only now.

@ProclivityForPyrotechnics Hell no that would guarantee đŸ¤®

It was a lovely rocking Pendolino đŸ¤¢đŸ¤¢đŸ¤¢đŸ¤¢đŸ¤¢đŸ¤¢

Tablets like kwells and wrist bands. No books, tablets or phones. Look at the horizon out of front window, not side windows. Encourage closing eyes and sleep if all else fails.

Sympathies OP - I have two very travel sick children (inherited from me!). From age 2 we’ve used liquid phenergan, which is really very effective. You don’t need a prescription and it’s available at most pharmacies. It’s an anti-histamine so can make them v tired too - but on a long drive that’s no bad thing đŸ˜€

We are in the same boat as you. Both Phenergen and Joy Rides help our 4 year old. Would love to try her in the front of the car but I’m nervous she would be sick while I’m driving.

Since when? I bought some only last week in the chemist .. strange!

How old is she? Either have her sit in the front, or put her in the middle seat in the back where she can see where you're going. No distractions such as books, tablets, phones etc - she needs to look at the road in front so her balance can adjust to the bends and corners.

Works for me and DD.

I used to get really travel sick in cars when I was young. I needed to sit in the front seat and keep looking straight out at the horizon. Couldn't look at anything in the car or read etc, and couldn't fall asleep or I'd be sick when I woke up again.

MinnieMountain · 31/05/2022 06:32

Maybe it’s just the liquid for under 5’s then @stevalnamechanger . They told me in Boots that parents had been abusing it to get their DC to sleep.

Caspianberg · 31/05/2022 06:41

The middle seat also works better like the front seat as they can see where they are going so reduces motion sickness. I get ill in the back if I’m not in the middle

Nothing we can get in the UK works. Dramamine from America or Gravol from Canada is what we use. It’s not available here.

dameofdilemma · 31/05/2022 10:11

Stugeron (the active ingredient is Cinnizine and there are other brands) and sitting in the front seat.

Dd's GP advised above when she was 4 and wrote her a prescription for the Stugeron as min age is 5. At that age the Stug did make her drowsy but now, age 10, it doesn't.

We'd already tried Kwells (which contain hyoscine I think which is a different active ingredient) and bands, they didn't work.
We were already watching what she ate, audiobooks, ensuring fresh air, no reading etc. Nothing worked.

For shorter journeys (under an hour) just sitting in the front is ok. Headphones and listening to music definitely helps dd.

I used to get terribly car sick, but it was DM that did everything wrong. She used to make us all get a big sleep before hand so we'd be rested, force us to have a massive breakfast, and force me to read on the journey. It's no fucking wonder I was puking before we got to the end of the street!

Now, I eat very lightly before a journey where I'm not driving, or not at all - crackers with a bit of butter only.
I try to tire myself out so I sleep for part or all of it, and I don't read or watch anything other than the horizon.
