Yes wash all my fruit and veg.

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 28/05/2022 20:40

upinaballoon · 28/05/2022 20:31

No. I let it get nasty and brown in the fridge and then throw it away.

Sunnysal · 28/05/2022 20:41

Never washed fruit or veg. I'm 70.

oobedobe · 28/05/2022 20:42

we've had outbreaks of e-coli food poisoning on Romaine lettuce here so yes always wash!

You can buy a small salad spinner makes it easier

itsthesoundofthepolice · 28/05/2022 20:42

Never. I don't wash any fruit/veg. I don't fancy a watery soggy salad and I refuse to buy a salad spinner

BadNomad · 28/05/2022 20:49

I wash it with cold water then just give it a good shake. I prefer it to still be a bit damp.

glamosaurus · 28/05/2022 20:52

The replies on this thread are unintentionally hilarious (if you assume it's a euphemism)GrinGrinGrin

Penguintears · 28/05/2022 20:53

I always wash it. But I've also wondered if just rinsing with water will actually remove e-coli if it's on there?

comfortablyfrumpy · 28/05/2022 20:57

You have reminded me that I can't find my salad spinner. I have now got one on order. No more soggy leaves :)

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 28/05/2022 20:58

I wash it. It almost always has visible dirt on it and I think it tastes better when washed. Worth the minor hassle of washing and drying.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 28/05/2022 21:03

I don't wash any fruit or veg 😳

Hallyup89 · 28/05/2022 21:05

Nope. Don't wash any fruit or veg unless it's visibly dirty. Never been sick from it, nor has any of my family.

You realise water doesn't kill e-coli, right?

Verbena87 · 28/05/2022 21:09

Wash, line colander with clean tea towel and Chuck in, gather up edges of tea towel and take lettuce bundle out and swing wildly in garden - our granny used to get us to do this as kids, I now suspect to get us out from under her feet for 5 minutes, but it does dry the lettuce and it is still fun in middle age (yes I ought to get out more/a life. Probably)

StaunchMomma · 28/05/2022 21:12

Of course, I'm not an animal!

*I mean, of course we are, as a species, literally animals but.......... whatever, wash your feckin' lettuce! It's got slug piss on it!! 😁

LifeInsideMyhead · 28/05/2022 21:16

Does rinsing in water actually DO anything though? (Aka shower thread...)

bassackwards · 28/05/2022 21:16

A litigator I know who specialises in product/food liability informed me that the food product sold in supermarkets that is most likely to cause illness in consumers is.... lettuce.

  • If it isn’t organic, that means it has been sprayed with insect killer and you are literally eating poison 🤢
  • If it is organic, it’s not quite so bad but probably got some soil and bug dirt on it - still minging not to wash it.

You do know organic still uses pesticide right? Just less.

Onwards22 · 28/05/2022 21:40

I can’t believe there’s people who don’t wash their fruit and veg 🤢🤢

How many grubby hands touch it who don’t wash their hands after they’ve sneezed, been to the toilet etc and then you just put it straight in your mouth.

I wash it and flap it about with my hands and then prop the leaves up so the water drips down.
I’ll pat it with kitchen roll if I’m in a rush.

LifeInsideMyhead · 28/05/2022 21:46

Onwards... its just never occured to me tbh. Unless it was actually had dirt on it.

Im nearly 50 and it hasnt harmed me or the kids so I suppose we'll carry on...

BadNomad · 28/05/2022 23:21

If you've ever been through the horror of biting a caterpillar in half, you will always rinse your lettuce first. They're gooey. 🐛

MermaidMummy06 · 28/05/2022 23:35

Yes. I've actually watched people put dirty hands, sneeze or cough over vegetables. Yuk. They get washed/spun. Same with bagged salad as it's washed in chlorine & there's constantly people posting about bugs, etc. found in the salad.

MarmiteCoriander · 28/05/2022 23:37

Dobbycraft · 28/05/2022 17:50

Wash it and dry in a salad spinner!

This ^

RiverSkater · 28/05/2022 23:56

I soak it in salt water for about 5 mins (my mum did this, she said the salt killed any little bugs) then dry in a tea towel.

I don't wash any other fruit or veg though!
