Would you report someone for continuously driving around with no car tax or m.o.t?

Without going into loads of details, I’ve got nightmare neighbours who’ve lived near us for almost a year. There’s always something kicking off at their house, and one of the tenants drives his car like an idiot, by racing around, and so obviously has no regard for how his driving could impact others.
Because of the way he drives and parks his car where he likes, even if it’s on the path or over people’s driveways, I checked to see if the car is taxed, only to find out there’s been no tax or m.o.t on it for months.
Considering the car is being used every day, would you report it?

The point is, lljkk, that according to the OP this guy is a risky driver, parks like a cock, and is an all round terrible neighbour.

In that situation I reckon she's both morally justified in trying to take him off the road, and understandable in her desire to have bad things happen to him.

His idiotic driving did draw my attention, I wouldn’t have checked if it was above board. It’s a shame that people like the poster you quoted can’t seem to grasp that drivers like this put people at risk and would rather turn a blind eye. Until it happens to them ……

Yes,report him! Actually,I'm amazed that he's got away with it for so long! My exBf parked his untaxed car outside his house for a few hours, prior to taxing it,and someone obviously reported it, because 3 hours later, there was an official warning notice on the windscreen!

ilovesooty · 28/05/2022 17:22

You get enough reminders these days of your MOT expiring. It's difficult to make a mistake.

Yes I would.

MrsPnut · 28/05/2022 17:24

I drove past a clamped car earlier with a big No Tax sign pasted on the windscreen.

I’m glad, why should we have to pay VED, pay for insurance and pay to keep our cars in a road worthy condition when idiots seem to think it is beneath them.

Regularsizedrudy · 28/05/2022 17:25

I’ve done this before and absolutely nothing happened. It’s infuriating.

i can’t understand how some reports are acted on, yet some seem to be ignored.

Have you reported this kind of thing before and there was no action taken? If so, that’s shocking that people can get away with driving illegally.

Yes not only me but my neighbours reported him too for weeks nothing was done I reported him for driving while his licence was suspended too told them exactly where he was they could have easily picked him up for it, the locals chose not to but they are known to protect him this latest car he has is in his girlfriends name im assuming she is paying for it because he just doesn't bother

woodhill · 28/05/2022 19:16

Yes

summer712 · 28/05/2022 19:31

Purely for racing round in a residential area where it's an accident waiting to happen yes I would.

thekaratekid · 28/05/2022 20:32

@Jubileegems I only reported once, but the neighbour was not well liked in the road and the pick up truck was very distinctive looking. It had various modifications, odd stickers and so was more memorable than your average Ford fiesta. I suspect other neighbours had noticed it, looked it up and reported it as well.

If I recall correctly the reporting form asked when and where the vehicle was most likely to be parked on a public road. Seeing that the neighbour always dumped it on a dangerous corner that was easy.

RollOnWinter · 28/05/2022 20:40

Yes, I would

That’s shocking, and makes me wonder what’s the actual point in encouraging people to report illegal drivers, if when they do the DVLA don’t appear to bother acting on tip offs.

I got caught with no tax (wasn’t intentional - life was chaotic and I forgot to change my address on the log book so didn’t know it had expired) and they definitely did something. I got clamped and fined a phenomenal amount. Roughly £600 I think - they told me I could have been imprisoned.

that was just tax - it was MOT exempt.

if you report, I can’t see them getting away with it.

vipersnest1 · 28/05/2022 22:07

I reported a car that was badly parked on my estate and had no road tax. It was gone around a week later.
Report the car. If it hasn't gone within a fortnight, keep reporting it until something is done.

Crazykatie · 29/05/2022 07:43

If he is insured which is highly unlikely the company would have to pay out on any third party claim. If an uninsured driver causes damage there is a compensation scheme.
Yes, there are a lot of non taxed, uninsured vehicles - some driven by women too

Seriously79 · 29/05/2022 08:06

This is tricky!

I have a family member, who has never passed her test, therefore has no insurance.

Car isn't MOT'd, isn't even registered in her own name. And yet she drives kids around all the time.

I'm not s'pose to know, but i do. I only know as another family member has told me in confidence, and if it ever got out that I was the one who reported it its would ruin all parties involved.

cushioncovers · 29/05/2022 08:12

Yes absolutely I would

ILoveYoga · 29/05/2022 08:18

Yes, you should.

Badbadbunny · 29/05/2022 08:19

Yes, and I've done so in the past.

Whether the police or DVLA will do anything is a different matter.

In cases like yours where you genuinely forgot to tax your car, then I can see how tthis could happen, although I’m surprised they fined you that much.
The car I’m referring to hasn’t even been m.o.t’d for months and that’s probably why there’s now no tax on it for the last few months, as he can’t tax it without an m.o.t.

People like him are the sort who piss me off, I could ignore the no taxing bit, but driving with no m.o.t is unforgivable.

This you should most DEFINITELY report!

she deserves the book throwing at her! How would you feel if she caused an accident with her kids inside? terrible, I’m sure.
You could report anonymously I’m presuming.

Please report this. This isn't one of those situations where you should mind your own business. It's not only illegal, but extremely dangerous. She could kill someone. Honestly, I'd be straight on the phone with information like that and wouldn't give a shit about the family fallout.
