Allow you to change the ‘reference’ when you make a payment to a regular payee… (I don’t mean a DD)

I need to change the reference each time so that the payee knows what I’m paying them for…

Or do you have you set the payment up again to update the reference?

Looking for a new building society/bank…

You can change it each time on mine (Virgin, previously Yorkshire).

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 27/05/2022 07:33

Yes, First Direct.

Santander, Halifax, HSBC and Chase do.

Yep. BARCLAYS.

WhatHaveIFound · 27/05/2022 07:36

Yes - First Direct & HSBC

Yes HSBC

Are you with Nationwide, OP? They don't allow it, and it's incredibly annoying.

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 27/05/2022 07:37

Yes, Monzo

LizzieSiddal · 27/05/2022 07:37

Interesting thread. I’m with Nationwide and you can’t do this, it’s so annoying!

LaWench · 27/05/2022 07:43

If you're looking for a new account, I'd recommend Santander 123lite as a bill paying account for cashback on DDs and Chase bank for spends (1% cashback) and savings (1.5% interest).

sanityisamyth · 27/05/2022 07:43

Yes. Lloyds

Greatoutdoors · 27/05/2022 07:45

Halifax and HSBC do

Sillystripytail · 27/05/2022 07:46

Yeah, Barclays and NatWest let you do this.

bigbluebus · 27/05/2022 07:51

I'm with NatWest and yes I can do this. I think I get a text notification to say the reference has been changed but that may depend on the amount of the payment.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 27/05/2022 08:08

Yes with Monzo.
You can also add your own reference on your statement. I find this useful as I can put more detail in or put different notes that make sense to me and not the receiver.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/05/2022 08:10

Santander does, but you have to go through the security set up each time so its a pain, especially as they're particularly hardcore with the 'are you really really sure you know what you're doing sending that money to that person'.

FinallyHere · 27/05/2022 08:14

Currently RBS - yes, it generates a notification that the reference has been changed.

Moving to Chase, who also allow this.

SeaRabbit · 27/05/2022 08:16

I'm with RBS too, and you can change the reference but it treat like a new payment for security so there is a £1,000 limit. Which was annoying when we had building work done. Not a problem in normal times though.

Fleur405 · 27/05/2022 08:21

I’m with starling bank and they let you change the reference and also let you add notes to items on your statement.

70kid · 27/05/2022 08:35

Lloyds allow you to do this

larkstar · 27/05/2022 09:09

Barclays and Starling both do.
I can recommend Starling - honestly it took about 10 mins to install the app and create an account.

GiltEdges · 27/05/2022 09:17

Yes, Natwest and Monzo both do. If I was choosing a new account, of the two I prefer Monzo.

MediumTedium · 27/05/2022 11:09

@OwlsDance & @LizzieSiddal

correct!

Really inconvenient and unhelpful rule, for little security ‘gain’ IMO!

I’ll look at some of these suggested, thank you everyone.
