Are there any podcasts where the hosts don't waffle?

I'm trying to become a fan of podcasts but so many of them are so waffly. I can take a little banter but sometimes it feels like going somewhere with two friends and the other two start conversing and proceed to ignore you for the rest of the evening. So often it's barely related. I don't care what they did with a stapler in third grade!

I'm enjoying Shedunnit because it gets straight to the point. Are there any other podcasts out there which are relatively concise?

TIA

The Allusionist. Best podcast EVER.
Mainly just one person although she does often have a guest to discuss her subject . But there is no rambling

I like Dateline NBC, the episodes that Keith Morrison presents.

Greatoutdoors · 23/05/2022 19:48

I listened to a lovely one on Guardian Longreads last night about phone boxes. Sounds random but it was a really nice bit of journalism.
I also like Ladykillers with Lucy Worsley or if you are into ones with hosts, The poet laureate has gone to his shed is nice.

I’m not really into ‘banter’ so I avoid podcasts with a couple of hosts and go for stories or journalism instead. Or Desert Island Discs.

My current favourites are The Secret Room and What Was That Like. Both are basically a bloke interviewing someone with (a) a secret or (b) a huge life event. Both good interviewers. They don't take over the show and ask good questions. Really really interesting and easy to listen to

Louis Theroux's 'Grounded' podcast (although was a limited BBC series, so no new eps once you've finished the ones that are there) and Russell Brand's 'Under the Skin' podcast, which has the best guests of any podcast I've listened to (bar maybe Joe Rogan, but I generally don't enjoy his podcasts as much).

I always choose podcasts with just one host. Casefile (true crime) is excellent as is anything presented by Lindsay Graham - American History Tellers, American Scandal, History Daily and Business Movers.

Ironmanrocks · 23/05/2022 19:53

I used to listen to 'Shortcuts' by Josie Long. And I also enjoy the Moth.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 23/05/2022 19:55

My dad Wrote a Porno? Funniest thing ever.

Onlythelaundryfairy · 23/05/2022 19:56

The best I've heard was the homeschool histories!
Otherwise I like The Moth, and Story Collider.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 23/05/2022 19:59

Don’t listen to Fortunately then! 50 odd minutes a week off wonderfully witty, clever chat both between co-hosts and usually a guest. They do include the listener though - I feel included. I look forward to Friday evenings where I snuggle up in bed with the dog and we listen to the marvellous Fi Glover and Jane Garvey ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Casefile, Mens Rea and The Trail Went Cold are well researched, accurate, and dish up the facts without waffle. I only listen to them occasionally, because I actually like a bit of waffle.

For longer form podcasts, The Dropout is free of the usual vanity babble.

Solosunrise · 23/05/2022 20:10

I like desert Island discs. Most of the bbc ones are more professionally presented.
I also like Feel Better, Live more with Dr Rangan Chatterjee though the adverts are quite lengthy so I fast forward them
Some good suggestions on this thread

luckynumber7 · 23/05/2022 20:20

It depends on what topics you are particularly interested in, I really like Casefile, They Walk Among Us and Canadian True Crime for true crime podcasts.

Health podcasts which I am enjoying are The Doctor's Kitchen, Feel Better Live More with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee, and Lifespan with Dr. David Sinclair. Also The Matt Walker podcast, and The Ultimate Health Podcast.

A good political one is The Rest is Politics with Rory Stewart and Alistair Campbell, I like their sensible discussions of current political events with a bit of humour and reminiscence added in too.

Thanks for this. Looks really good. Just listening to one about trust now

I really like the Crime Junkie hosts. There are two of them but there’s a main host Ashley and she does 80% of the talking and then there’s Britt who’s almost the voice of the audience, she sort of chips in every now and again to ask a question about how that could’ve happened or to read a statement etc.

LordEmsworth · 23/05/2022 20:30

You Must Remember This is not concise - which is why I love it - but it is absolutely waffle-free. Excellently researched and very educational and thoughtful.

Current series is about the impact of the end of the Production Code - and the introduction of the rating system - on the films of the 80s. It is fascinating.

lljkk · 23/05/2022 20:40

I also hate waffle !
Most the BBC ones do not waffle.
Also don't waffle:
Brexit Republic, Trade Bites, Economist ones, Payne's Politics, Washington Post ones.

Although the Guys on Brexit Republic managed to toss Bob Dylan song lyrics & titles back and forth once, perfectly in tune with stories they were covering, but that was just ridiculously witty, not waffle.

NannyR · 23/05/2022 20:43

"This podcast will kill you" is great. The podcasts on BBC sounds don t have the adverts and tend not to have the chatting, "death in Ice valley" is excellent, the spooky ones by Danny Robbins are great too - the Battersea poltergeist and uncanny.

I've recently found a good one called "National park after dark" - it's histor ical/interesting/dark/spooky/bad luck/survival stories about national parks all over the world. It does have an insane amount of adverts though.

suckingonchillidogs · 23/05/2022 20:48

I love We didnt start the fire

suckingonchillidogs · 23/05/2022 20:50

Posted too soon - We didn't start the fire, (modern history, they take a different topic from the Billy Joel song each week) - I've learned a lot from it

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 23/05/2022 20:54

Not really a podcast but l love Desert lsland discs!

daretodenim · 23/05/2022 21:08

Laura Richard's Crime Analyst. She definitely doesn't waffle!

pattish · 23/05/2022 21:12

I can’t stand podcasts for this reason. It’s like listening to two people having fun, but you’re not.

Even the ones with a single host are so SLOW and boring. I’ve tried so hard to like them.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 23/05/2022 21:40

A wish for Afghanistan

Dauncets · 23/05/2022 21:44

Jon ronson things fall apart is good.

Agree that I hate the chatty ones. And the ones where they're not wearing headsets and have that shit echoey clatter - so annoying.
