Trigger warning (death) Nurse arrested, Birmingham Children's Hospital

Couldn't see another thread about this story so thought I'd start one - apologies if it's a duplication.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10843369/Nurse-27-arrested-infant-poisoned-died-childrens-hospital-Birmingham.html

I'm finding this story so upsetting. My son has just been discharged from intensive care at Birmingham Children's Hospital and it's impossible for me to believe that any of the (truly wonderful) nurses I met during his months at the hospital would be capable of such a thing.

I haven't been able to get over this all day, I'm just obsessing.

Why would somebody do this?

I feel so sad for the parents 😔

Gosh, that is horrific if the allegation is true.
Why does this happen in children's hospitals? There is still the case of Lucy Letby going on.

I hope this poor child's family find out the truth and get justice.

BerkyWithTheGoodHair · 23/05/2022 15:59

I'll reserve judgment until more is known, the headline makes it sound like the nurse has knowingly given the child arsenic or something when it could be a tragic case of an overworked, exhausted professional giving the wrong substance or misjudging something.
The media can be bastards.

Statement from police says they are investigating in relation to poisoning ‘with intent’. It still may not be, but they’re considering it.

Until we know more details it's difficult to say what's happened
.

Lockheart · 23/05/2022 17:56

This is still very early days. It could be an awful accident where an overdose was administered, or it could be an intentional criminal act.

I wouldn't read too much into the "with intent" phrasing - the specific crime which covers this is maliciously administering poison with the intent to e.g. harm, injure etc. It is the law which the police will be investigating whether it has been broken, it does not necessarily follow that the police have evidence of intentional poisoning at this time.

ValentinaLuna · 23/05/2022 19:01

Terribly sad situation regardless of accident or deliberate

my dc has spent many times in Bch and intensive care so this did make me feel physically sick

GirlCrushxxx · 23/05/2022 19:08

Vile behaviour. What is wrong with these people?

Would police playing guessing games and then releasing it unless it was truth?

GoodVibesHere · 23/05/2022 19:08

Absolutely horrendous for the poor parents.

If if has been done purposefully, then the nurse in question must surely be extremely mentally unwell.

HalloHello · 23/05/2022 19:23

If it was just the case of an accidental overdose, I don't think the police would be involved despite it being fatal. They must have some evidence that the drug administered was done so with intent to harm.

User48751490 · 23/05/2022 19:40

Well, we don't need another Beverley Allitt. Absolutely horrific if allegations are true.

Well there was that case at stepping Hill a few years back where a nurse was charged and remanded in custody for several murders
It turned out to be a totally different nurse, as it turns our she wasn't whiter than white and some ward medication was found at her house
But she was no murderer .

GirlCrushxxx · 23/05/2022 19:58

People always say ' oooh must be mentally ill' when it's a female

Odd

Honestly, I'd think anyone who had done what's being implied here was mentally ill, man or woman. How could they not be?

What other reason is there? No one in their right mind would surely commit such an atrocity.

That's very naive. You don't have to be mentally ill to kill, also most people with mental illness are not a threat. Of course it could be a factor but I never understand why people think that all killers must suffer from mental illness.

Yes, she got struck off for a short while, but us back nursing again now. They found Tramadol in her house and images of children on her boyfriend's computer.

The real villain wasn't even a nurse, he'd bought his registration documents somewhere in South East Asia. I think that's why there are so many identity checks now before anyone can start an NHS job.

GirlCrushxxx · 23/05/2022 20:22

Bear in mind it might not be the first time....just the first time caught

So all killers are mentally Ill by the logic here then?

EgonSpengler2020 · 23/05/2022 20:23

Well if they do arrest someone for it, I hope they give them a trial a little more promptly than Lucy Letby (nearly 4 years since her initial arrest/ 6 years since alleged crimes commited) so that everyone involved can get justice and closure.

AllPlayedOut · 23/05/2022 20:27

With the caveat that this person has not been found guilty yet and may be entirely innocent, there's an article here www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-48600478 discussing why nurses and other medical staff kill. There are more detailed articles out there I'm sure but it's a start.

There’s certainly an argument they aren’t mentally well. I appreciate that doesn’t mean they are not guilty by reason of insanity.

ENoeuf · 23/05/2022 20:42

Gosh op that is very fresh for you, no wonder it's affected you. Hope your dc is on the mend.

MermaidEyes · 23/05/2022 20:43

Whatever happened, its horrific, and those poor parents. This is the second case in a week of arrests regarding the death of a child, last week was two women arrested after a child had a medical emergency at a nursery in Stockport. Truly heartbreaking for the families.

YourVagesty · 23/05/2022 21:04

@AllPlayedOut thanks for posting that - very insightful.

we should not be discussing criminal cases that are current.
as soon as somebody is arrested, they are current.
it may be prejudicial.
contrary to the contempt of court act 1981.

YourVagesty · 23/05/2022 21:23

If something is in the news, surely we can discuss it @alexdgr8?

I started the thread because i found the case upsetting. I'm not trying to name the nurse etc.
