TV for 9 year old

Theatrefish · 23/05/2022 13:46

DD9 is beginning to grow out of kids' tv and I'm hoping to get some recommendations for things she might enjoy.

Successes

Ghosts (the rude bits go over her head!)
Bake Off
The Floor is Lava (but I hate it!)

Failures

Friends (much too grown up context needed)
Anne with an E - didn't hold her attention.

She loves funny stuff - I was wondering about Malcolm in the Middle - is the language ok? (I don't mind "crap", "hell", "ass" but would rather avoid "shit" etc)

If you can find the secret life of 3 year olds etc on4 - it's good.

Taskmaster is great.

Father Ted & the IT crowd although it's over the line often

Another for lost in space and young sheldon. I’m not sure about Malcom in the middle trying to remember if there’s anything dodgy, same with The Middle, I can’t remember!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 23/05/2022 22:41

Another vote for Taskmaster bleeped here, DS10 is already on series 3 and we only started it last month.
Other successes;
Crystal Maze
Legomasters (aussie one)
Making fun
Nailed it
Is it cake?
Total wipeout USA
Ninja Warriors

Oh my word, we're at least 5 years off Father Ted! (I love it, but no way at age 9.) DD is still very innocent, still believes in Santa, but has a well developed sense of humour.

Though I can't wait until we can sit down and watch Father Ted together. And Black Books. So many classics! Of course, by then she'll be much too cool to want to watch TV with Mummy.

Gravity falls, we all watched it (ds9, dd16, dh and me) and all loved it! It's a cartoon but much more grown up!
We also watch The Goldbergs and Malcolm in the Middle.

FixItUpChappie · 23/05/2022 23:00

I enjoy watching The Amazing Race with my 9yr old - all seasons are currently on Disney+

stayathomer · 24/05/2022 06:11

Oh forgot to add Clarence and the amazing world of gum ball if you have access to them (cartoons).

Hedonism · 24/05/2022 06:22

Saving lives at sea, if you can still get it.

Nappyvalley15 · 24/05/2022 07:14

Would opt for the middle over malcolm in the middle at that age. I went back to MIM recently and found it more teen than tween.

Generally there is loads of tween stuff on Netflix or disney.

Clawdy · 24/05/2022 08:12

Dodger is a good watch.

AlphaAlpha · 24/05/2022 08:18

Mine enjoys crap American tween sitcoms - Sam and cat (awful!), Henry Danger, The thunderman's and Hannah Montana.
Loves a bit of bake off, masterchef, repair cafe, location x3, monkey life, ice road truckers and outback truckers!

Are you sure your nine-year-old still believes in Santa? You say she’s innocent, but she may be playing along with you.

She's beginning to ask questions. Especially as DH and I are humanist so we talk a lot about science, reason and not believing in anything supernatural that can watch and judge you. And DD will say, "Except for Santa". When we were in Turkey last year she wanted to know all about Santa's birthplace and his mum etc!

Every year since she was about 6 I think it'll be the last year she believes. She has a younger sibling which I think helps.

She enjoyed the first couple of episodes of Dodger but hasn't asked to watch more.

I recommend When Calls the Heart on Netflix.
We've also watched Chesapeake Shores.

There is nothing risqué in them at all. No hint of sex and no bad language. Just Hallmark channel type of wholesome family shows.

My 8 year old and 10 year old loved them!!
And I enjoyed watching them with them

ItsMutinyontheBunty · 26/05/2022 19:27

My 9 year old said the older day “Who do you think created the myth of Santa?”. Sneaky, almost caught me out! I think she’s pretty skeptical now!

DoNutSweatTheSmallStuff · 26/05/2022 19:34

Dodger
The Next Step
Lego Masters
Junior Bake Off
Deadly 60

mishmased · 26/05/2022 20:39

Young sheldon

catsnore · 26/05/2022 21:32

Have you tried Merlin? (BBC/Netflix) we watched when dd was about 8 and we all enjoyed it.

On CBBC she still enjoys Operation Ouch, Horrible Histories etc.

David Attenborough documentaries are usually popular too. Anything with Bear Grylls or Steve Backshall.
