Songs that should be banned from radio request shows

I love a radio listeners request show for opportunities to hear long forgotten but amazing songs.

I find it such a wasted opportunity when people ring in and ask for the same, obvious things and if i was the host, I would have a ban list. First song on it would be:

Don't Stop Me Now by Queen

Any others to add?

AAAAAARRRRGHHHHH!

Are you half-way there?! Grin

I saw that Sweet Caroline thing on the BBC breakfast news and I agree with you: just why? It's a nice song (well, it was until we suddenly started hearing it relentlessly) and easy to sing along to, but what's the relevance or the reason for the ubiquitous love for it?

Singing a song extolling the wonders of somebody called Caroline to commemorate the longevity of the reign of somebody called Elizabeth is just bizarre. It reminds me of the old Harry Enfield sketch which showed Tim Nice-But-Dim as a newborn and his (equally not the sharpest) parents proudly announcing that they'd decided to call him 'Tim' after his uncle - his Uncle Arthur Confused

Definitely livin' on a prayer at the moment. Grin

Now, overplayed as it is, that would at least be a topical song with the current cost of living crisis!

But, I think the chosen song should have been of British or Commonwealth origin at the very least, and as you say, the lyrics have zero relevance to the occasion.

Most things from the 80s. It was a wonderful time for music - Echo and The Bunnymen, Ultravox, Jesus and Mary chain, Depeche Mode, New order, Bruce Springsteen...........

Instead they just play Come on Eileen, Girls just want to have fun and Whitney bloody Houston, Karma Chameleon and Tainted Love. I HATE THOSE SONGS.

Much as I can't stand it myself, it does seem quite weird seeking a song for everybody to sing in tribute to the Queen - when she already has her own song that was specifically written for everybody to sing in tribute to the Queen!

Antarcticant · 24/05/2022 12:05

I hear the Sex Pistols' take on it is being re-released. That would be a stirring tribute!

thing47 · 24/05/2022 12:12

I also hate it when a particular artist has produced a wealth of great songs, but they only ever play the best-known one or two of them

This. Bryan Adams has written some really good rock songs, but what do they always play? That bloody dirgey ballad 'Everything I Do'. Funnily enough Adams himself was so bored of it that for many years he refused to play it live at his gigs.

And Billy Joel. They could play Only The Good Die Young, or Say Goodbye to Hollywood, or Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, or Allentown, or or or… But nope, it's always We Didn't Start The Fire. Nothing wrong with that song, but how about a bit of variety!

I'm with the poster up thread who hates Dancing Queen, I do to, it seems to be the go to ABBA song on the radio, although I wish they'd play a lot less ABBA than they do full stop!

We're not all huge fans and there's shed loads of other music out there surprisingly!😡

Yes. It would also be more than a little inappropriate for the other side-rail of this thread, considering that HM is now of an age where dancing is probably not her main activity!

I also never understand why Abba seems to be the only Eurovision act whose songs are commonly played on the radio in the UK. There are lots of great songs from the UK and all across the continent (most of them in English) that happened to originate in Eurovision, or people who came to prominence via the contest (as opposed to already well-known artists who once did EV) - and they're put in a box and only ever played for one week in May.

If you removed all of the songs by UK/US/Irish/Canadian/Australian/NZ artists from British radio, what would you be left with? Although those six countries have contributed a huge amount to world popular music, it's not like we have a sexopoly on all of the decent music produced on the planet - even if we just limit it to 'western-style' popular music.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/05/2022 13:21

Maybe that's the explanation for Abba's 40-year 'mysterious disappearance' (aka four people getting on with living their lives) - they escaped to a desert island without any radio stations to avoid having to keep hearing their own back catalogue - but especially Dancing Queen - over and over again Grin

Anything by Michael Jackson. I don't see why we should have to listen to the music of a paedophile.

Newsflash, you do not have to listen to anything you do not want to. I love listening to his music, as do plenty of other people. Also Michael Jackson was never convicted of any such crime.

FigBiscuit · 25/05/2022 07:55

Love Cats. Its a plinky plonky dissonant novelty track. At the Union disco (!) people used to rush onto the dance floor as the first bars played. I would always rush off.
I turn the radio off if it comes on.

I've got the original vinyl from 1977. I'll whack that on the old turntable on 'the day'.
