Monkeypox?

Apologies if there is already a thread about this - the search function is useless atm! I will get this deleted if it's a duplication.

Just interested to read MNers views on this as I don't know what to make of the news reports, and I know there are very knowledgable MNers. I think it's hard for people with no knowledge of things like this, to gauge the "significance" of these cases from the news.

On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being "meh, whatever, fuck it" and 10 being "PANIC MODE ENABLED" I'm normally about a 3. Is that about right?

It cam spread through respiratory droplets and close contact as well as direct physical contact, it can also spread by touching contaminated surfaces/materials.

Keep on with the fear narrative and you may well get key workers refusing to go to work this time.

mindplace
"I don’t think monkeypox is a high risk/too dangerous, but although apparently mild, the rash seems so horrific, I think it would be unbearable to have it yourself or look after anyone else who has it. I appreciate that sounds very snowflake-y, but I honestly think I would have to keep my eyes closed the whole time."

I agree with this, I was eating my lunch earlier when a news article came on and the rash appeared, I could no longer stomach eating anything, it made me so repulsed. It looks like scabs full of snot! Sorry but it is the appearance that concerns me. I actually have a scar from the small pox vaccine which I had over 50 years ago so I imagine the scarring from he rash is far worse

basically its the same as the first variant of covid 1 in 100 will die from it, its not as transmittable, yet, but it should be of concern im at about 5-6, Belgium has brought in 3 week mandatory isolation for contacts of suspected cases, i feel we wont be too far behind

mmmmmmghturep · 23/05/2022 02:33

Bet Belgiums sick pay is better than the UKs Who is going to pay for it. Are people really going to be willing to take less wages for three weeks or no wage at all for that time frame in a cost of living crisis.

mmmmmmghturep · 23/05/2022 03:19

As a child free by choice person i did plenty for others and their kids when i was working by doing the bank holiday shifts that some parents wouldnt do.

bluewanda · 23/05/2022 05:57

Yes I am concerned, as I read there’s a child who has the disease who’s now in intensive care in London 🙁

Smallpox vaccine is apparently effective against it, which is good, assuming we have some.

Apparently we don't.

You wouldn't necessarily want the smallpox vaccine for this. Its a risky vaccine to take for a generally mild illness.
This is being widely reported before anyone starts the antivax stuff.
