Non-squishy bar soap

Trying to cut down on plastic, but why is bar soap so SQUISHY after a few days! Are there any low plastic soaps that don't disintegrate quickly into sludge?

Get a magnetic soap holder to keep it dry.

RockCrushesLizard · 20/05/2022 12:23

You need a soap dish that allows water to drain off.
Also, it's worth thinking about how you're using the soap - my MIL always leaves it absolutely swimming in water, I have no idea how!!

It shouldn't be.

Buy your soap ahead of needing it, unwrap and place in a cupboard or in your undies drawer (where it will gently scent them). This allows the soap to harden off which makes it last longer.

Invest in a decent soap dish with ridges which allows the soap to drain and dry between uses - don't allow it to sit in a puddle of water. Failing that (or as well as) get a cap from a bottle of beer and push it into the soap to make a small foot for the soap to stand on.

I really rate Pears transparent soap for not going sludgy, I like the green one. Bought one during lockdown when it was the only soap that hadn't sold out 🙄 but get it all the time now.

octoegg · 20/05/2022 12:38

It does come wrapped in plastic inside the box though thinking about it.

FionaJT · 20/05/2022 12:39

I find the Faith in Nature ones pretty good (often on offer in Holland & Barrett)

TheFlis12345 · 20/05/2022 12:39

We use Pears as well and it stays solid.

MrOllivander · 20/05/2022 12:48

Pears
Johnson's honey baby soap
Nesti dante

Teael · 20/05/2022 12:54

Thank you! I have a good draining soap dish that elevates the soap, and drains. It's never sitting in water. It just never really dries. I will try the bottle tip. And pears, or the baby soap! I also will try the letting it harden off before using.

I find Imperial Leather stays hard - and it comes with a label to use as a foot so you don't need a bottle top!

BashfulClam · 20/05/2022 13:37

I use dettol soap bars and they always dry off and go back to normal.

LynneBenfield · 20/05/2022 13:42

Sanex bars are plastic free and stay solid, so long as you use a proper soap dish that drains.

ModerationInEverything · 20/05/2022 13:43

I keep it on an upturned nail brush. This lets it dry out properly.

thecurtainsofdestiny · 20/05/2022 13:43

Tesco own brand- the cheapest one

FleeceNavidadfromtheSheep · 20/05/2022 13:44

Kew soap (from garden centres etc), Italian soap from TK Maxx and Imperial Leather. All good.

LynneBenfield · 20/05/2022 13:45

if you buy packs of 2 and 4, the boxes are usually wrapped in plastic though, as a warning. Mind you, it’s still hugely reducing the amount of plastic compared to bottles of body wash.

Kiitos · 20/05/2022 13:45

Another vote for green Pears!

Babdoc · 20/05/2022 13:46

I like Imperial Leather, and it doesn’t go soggy. But does anyone else find it develops long cracks in the bar, if exposed in a warm bathroom?

SallyWD · 20/05/2022 13:50

I agree that Pears is good and doesn't go slimy. We have the magnetic soap holders so the soap is suspended in air! Great invention.

Flockameanie · 20/05/2022 13:50

I really like the Faith in Nature ones. No plastic wrapping either. Or Pears

NoFitStateMum · 20/05/2022 13:52

Sanex or Dettol are good. Both smell nice and are fine on my eczema prone hands / skin.

I really like Faith In Nature bars but they go so squishy when used as hand soap so I won't be buying again.

LynneBenfield · 20/05/2022 13:54

Pears gives me squeaky, tight skin, sadly. I like dove but it goes a bit squishy and isn’t technically soap, so Sanex it is. I like a lot of luxury soaps too but often they are bit fragranced for more sensitive bits.

IstayedForTheFeminism · 20/05/2022 13:55

Dettol or shield don't go soggy.

BinBandit · 20/05/2022 14:00

We use Simple soap and just the normal shower soap tray and it's always fine. I'm not sure it sits in the environmental scale but DH has allergies and is also sensitive to anything with a perfume so it's pretty much all we can use. DSs use various other bar soaps in their bathroom, such as Dettol, imperial leather or coal tar soaps and they also seem fine and not soggy. We do keep our bathrooms aired though.
