What did I hear outside last night?

At about 2.30am there were really loud high pitched noise in threes like yip yip yip in the road. I stood looking for a really long time, but didn’t see any movement (although I’m short sighted and my glasses were downstairs). I was aware of it for about one and a half hours, but I don’t know if it stopped or I went to sleep.

The sound was similar to a squeaky dog toy, and I think there were at least two animals (or birds) because the noises seemed to be coming from several different places. It was very load and shrill.

We’re not rural but it’s a quiet road next to a playing field one side and a park opposite, so lots of bushes and trees. We get a fox occasionally, but this wasn’t him. Ive googled the sound hedgehogs make too, but it’s not that.

can anyone help?

Foxes, although frog being murdered is a good guess.

Frogs do make an awful screech when attacked

Someone having sex in your hedge. Sounds a lot like hedgehogs, or so I’ve heard.

😆

Frogs screech like birds when our cat picks them up. Gives me the heebie-jeebies. Also when I pull on to the drive at night their beady little eyes catch the headlights and shine. Not a fan of frogs really. We used to get loads in our garden before we moved. And they are also sly barstards and pretend to be dead and then jump in your face when you go to remove the corpse. Our cat used to bring them into the house to play with 🤢

Frogs make an unearthly noise when they are murdered. Foxes, especially if mating or with cubs make non fox sounding noises.

I'm not convinced it was sparrows!

You all laugh but I get woken up at least once a week by a frog in its death throes (bloody cat!). They are loud and sound surprisingly human 😬

Unless you heard mutterings of a finger up the bum I would say hedgehogs...

That sounds very much like some of our local owls.

Fox orgy.

Foxes or frogs. Or both.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 20/05/2022 12:03

Owls! We get that sound often at night, as we live in a small rural village.

worraliberty · 20/05/2022 12:04

That's exactly the noise that foxes make OP, especially the younger ones.

Foxes or cats sound like someone is being murdered.

Yip yip yip sounds like a little owl to me. They very often call in threes like that

I had one of my hens being really scared as a fox had come into the garden - daft bird had decided to sleep in the (hopefully secure) run instead of the coop... so I was out there at 4.15am shooing the thing off (it went straightaway) and checking they were all right then no more sleep as waiting for it to come back. She kept up her clurrrking for about half an hour. I don't think you've heard that, but can commiserate with the sleeplessness!

Muntjac? We have them here and they sometimes make yipping sounds.

I hadn’t thought of owls!

Definitely could have been fox cubs or maybe frogs. We used to get loads, but our cat used to bite their heads off and leave their poor bodies on our front path. Poor cat died 3 years ago (old age, nothing frog related) so maybe their back and mating

ill be looking out tonight and taking binoculars, and my glasses. Also maybe a bucket of water in case @Alovelydayatlast is right, as I don’t want that kind of shenanigans in my cul de sac!!

Female tawny owls? Shouty muntjac?

Had three pairs of tawnys having a barney last month. 3 males twit twoo-ing (one in our cherry tree), followed by the 3 females screeching what could only be the tawny equivalent of, “Leave it Ian, he’s not worth it”.

Frogs not only yell, they blow up like balloons (this one did a few years ago when a fox was pawing at one in the garden before we cat proofed it)!

Def owls. We get yipping noises like that and it's Tawny Owl. I want it to be a Little Owl as they are rarer.
