So incessantly noisy here!!! Am assuming It's loads of starlings we have nesting close by but the noise is so shrill and unpleasant.

Anyone with bird knowledge who can educate me? Why so noisy and for how much longer? And don't even get me started on the crap over cars/windows....

I have an app on my phone which records sound in the night eg snoring and last night it registered “sleep talking” at 4.44am. Was it sleep talking? No, it was a bloody wood pigeon shouting it’s head off.

blackheartsgirl · 19/05/2022 19:37

I love birdsong. I love waking up to it as well, although I’m not so keen on seagulls screaming only because of the memories it invokes.

amouj · 19/05/2022 19:48

Apparently birds have adapted to sing much louder so they can hear each other over the noise of traffic and other industrial sounds

Don't get me wrong I do love nature and birdsong but this is harsh next level screeching, nothing pleasant or relaxing about it.

The cacophony seems to have died down a bit now.

Lots of Robins trying to mark their territory at the moment too
Ain't nature wonderful, you can predict what kind of winter we'll have from where they nest apparently
It's amazing

Hawkins001 · 19/05/2022 19:58

I Understand your perspectives about e.g. Bird poo, but it's lovely to hear nature, even if they are loud, besides, much better than people partying loudly etc

sassafras123 · 19/05/2022 20:01

I find this rather sad that people dislike the sounds of nature, especially that our garden birds are on the decline. Have we lost our connection with nature? I have seagulls outside the window squawking through the night but find it comforting knowing they are mating and that it won't last long. Rather that than traffic or building noise anyday. Suggest OP reads up on birds and learns to appreciate them while they are still around.

Sparrows and rooks = bastards

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 19/05/2022 20:04

I love birdsong during the day but there’s been something singing at 3am outside my bedroom window every night this week and it’s driving me insane!

Sheilaroundthefountain · 19/05/2022 20:16

I love it! I don’t sleep well and they keep me company.

I love all my garden bird visitors, but I can’t identify birdsong apart from the obvious ones. I keep meaning to learn.

suckingonchillidogs · 19/05/2022 21:10

Love hearing the birds except for the bastard wood pigeon who sits on our chimney so his monotonous drone echoes into the bedroom - shut ya beak already!

That's really lovely actually. I'm having trouble sleeping at the movement too so maybe I should try and change my perspective

I’ll swap you for two bloody irritating, tuneless wood pigeons. “Coo coo coooo!!” All day. Every day.

ChewtonBunny · 19/05/2022 21:41

There is nothing better than the sound of birds (other than magpies).

I love being woken by the dawn chorus and lying in my bed watching the sun come up.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/05/2022 21:48

I normally love bird song but the little bastards were up at 3:30 this morning which is frankly too damn early for me to be woken up.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 19/05/2022 22:00

Birdsong, yes. Lovely little garden birds tweeting and singing to each other. Joyful.

The colony of nesting rooks in the trees just outside of our property, however, are not lovely. They are the noisiest fucking birds you ever heard in your life and until they’ve finished nesting my back garden is a horrible cacophony of harsh, guttural croaking all bloody day. Fuck off and let me enjoy my lovely garden in peace you bastards.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 19/05/2022 22:07

There some weird night time creature making a noise in the dark, followed by the foxes barking. Then the birds start.

Love it.

AmbushedByCake · 19/05/2022 22:10

Its that time of year when the bastard birds nesting in our trees and next door's huge hedges wake me up at sunrise. I have to shut the windows when I'm on a Teams call because they're so noisy. But my colleagues in the office are being drowned out by sirens, traffic,.and people shouting, so I'll take the birds. It isn't bird song though. It's definitely bird screech.

That's exactly what I mean! I wouldn't describe the noises I can hear as birdsong. I'd have absolutely no issue with that.

I can’t figure out how such small creatures can make so much noise! I have a wood at the back of the house and the dawn chorus is so chuffing noisy at this time of year

Is it possible for you to see any of the shouty birds, OP? Sometimes it's interesting to see what they're actually making a noise about. A predatory magpie checking out young birds in nests, maybe. One time there was a huge commotion outside and I looked out to see just two sparrows, male and female. They were running around in circles because he was trying to mate with her and she was refusing. They looked very silly. It made me wonder what their shrieks meant and I smiled to see the female giving the male what for. You tell him, luv!

@Handyweatherstation I was watching two pigeons having a punch up this morning, it was actually quite fascinating to watch, even the dog was watching with interest.

Handyweatherstation · 20/05/2022 11:20

@FAQs, I've seen similar and it was fascinating. I was in someone's garden and her chickens were out and wandering around, when two robins started fighting and the chickens all perked up and ran over to watch. Hilarious.

slavetothekittens · 20/05/2022 11:42

Team birdsong here! I love hearing them and love waking in time to hear the dawn chorus strike up.

Deathraystare · 20/05/2022 15:39

I am a Londoner but don't mind at all. I live in hospital grounds so am used to sirens, etc but we also have an owl and a dog fox who let the world know of their existence and once they stop, the birds start! I really don't mind because I like listening to all the different bird calls.

I once stayed up in Scotland with my friend and could not sleep -actually waiting for some noise!!

dreamingofsun · 20/05/2022 15:43

I'd like them to stop shitting on my washing. The stains wont come out.
