Would you go public with a big lottery win?

The winners of the £184 million lotto win have gone public, a couple in their 40’s with small children. They say they went public as they want to help so many friends and family and it would have been difficult for them to keep it a secret.
Good luck to them, I say, I hope they have a great adventure on it but I don’t think I would ever want to go public, I would give lots away to family, friends and charities then slink off somewhere away from the hubbub of life.
Would you ever go public like them?

I would tell friends & family I’d won maybe 4/5 million so it’s enough to help them all out and explain away when people notice but not such a crazy amount you would be targeted as much.

doorfram · 19/05/2022 13:29

And I wouldn't tell friends and family either.

See I would want to help my family & friends

Limeseverywhere · 19/05/2022 13:29

It’s is and they do look like a lovely couple. It’s so great they have said they want to help all their family and friends. I do hope it brings them much happiness and they aren’t bombarded with people begging for help. If it were me I would have to employ someone to handle that side of things.

NO

Yes, they will need staff!

myuterusistryingtokillme · 19/05/2022 13:31

No, I would sit on it for a couple of months and then tell friends and family that I had won a much smaller amount

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 19/05/2022 13:32

Absolutely not

You only have to look at the very sad stories of previous winners who have gone public to see what an awful idea it is.

I also think I would be very good at winning a large jackpot

erikbloodaxe · 19/05/2022 13:32

No simply to protect my children from becoming a security target.

BelperLawnmower · 19/05/2022 13:32

I don't know if it's still the case that you only get additional support if you go public with the win, but if that is true I think it's highly unfair and pretty manipulative.

With £180m you can pay for whatever support you need without needing freebies from Camelot! Hell, if you thought only their team had the expertise needed you could offer to double all their salaries to work directly for you without even noticing the cost Grin

artificialheart · 19/05/2022 13:32

No way would I go public. I would also make sure family would know that I made a smaller win. So if I'd had won the 184 million, I would have said to family that I won 50 million. Here's a few million for you guys to buy your homes or pay off your mortgage but I'm going to buy this 30 million pound townhouse in Chelsea and invest in a business and dc's future and private school fees etc.

pilates · 19/05/2022 13:33

No, because I would want my children to work hard and find their own way in the world and not think they don’t have to do anything because their parents are loaded.

Theforest · 19/05/2022 13:33

I don't understand why anyone would go public. I wouldn't keep it a complete secret as with that sort of money you would help friends family etc. but I wouldn't want to be in the news etc. all sorts of parasites would come out of the woodwork.

A couple local to me won a huge amount a couple of years ago , went public saying they would use a lot of it to help local and ntional charites and wanted to stay in their home village . Cue never ending begging letters , really nasty poison pen letters and greed and resentment from people theyd known for years . They've packed up and moved away and hidden their identities...no good deed goes unpunished.

That really is sad.
I have watched a few documentaries about lottery winners and they all said similar, that big a win really does bring out the worst in others. Jealously, desperation, greed......

So many nopes, they're off their rocker going public with that much money under their belt. I know the lottery people put the pressure on to go public but it's cruel imo.

surely that's the case if it's public or not though? I actually think it's better to win 7m as opposed to 170m.

Hallyup89 · 19/05/2022 13:36

Not a chance. It's insane to announce it to anyone but close family, and even then I'd be wary.

If I had £184 mil I would be quite happy to share it with my DC - the idea of making them 'find their own way' is really odd when so much money is sitting in parents bank accounts. Surely it just means their lives will be different then they would have been as the have gone a different way?

cantcope88 · 19/05/2022 13:38

Hell No, thankfully my "circle of trust" is small. We would just disappear and start a new life without the worry of the begging letters or ex's coming out of the woodwork.

Oblomov22 · 19/05/2022 13:39

No. Never.

doorfram · 19/05/2022 13:39

Lots of winners who announce it say that would prefer anonymity but they felt it was inevitable that it would come out & didn't want to lie to people.

You get legal & financial help whether you go public or not.

AffIt · 19/05/2022 13:39

I don't personally move in those sort of circles, but I believe High-Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs) who bank with the likes of Coutts and similar (I think you have to have a specialist private bank to manage a win of that size - it's not the sort of cheque you can pay in to your local branch of the Halifax or whatever) will have specialist advisors on hand.

fluffycereal · 19/05/2022 13:40

I wouldn't go public. I'm autistic and can't deal with any sort of attention, it makes me feel unwell. I would buy adult DDs a house each and possibly do a lot of long overdue work on my own house but aside from that I would be a silent donator to many good causes.

hellcatspanglelalala · 19/05/2022 13:40

No chance I'd go public. We spend most of our spare money on travel so I wouldn't want to buy a massive mansion or flash cars - I don't think anyone would notice! I'd give loads away to charity, and try and find a way to give money to family and friends anonymously (no idea if this is even possible)

TheGlitterati · 19/05/2022 13:40

No. But then I don’t know how much of my life I’d change. I’d like to start my own business flipping houses and design, but I like to think I’d live where I live etc.

Phlewf · 19/05/2022 13:41

I assume there’s a service that rich people have where they pick you up in a car and seamlessly sort your whole life while you lounge on a beach. Id tell my family I had secured a very well
paid but incomprehensible tech job and spend my evenings in a Scrooge mcduck style vault.
