Things disguised as healthy...

A light hearted post but what are some things that are portrayed as healthy but aren't really ? My list is as follows...

Flavoured water
Most yoghurts
Yoghurt coated raisins
Most cereals
Fruit juices

Obviously we need to live a little but give us some that yiu think are purely just marketed to reel us in

What is unhealthy about flavoured water?

I'll say smoothies due to the sugar content.

Artificial sugars & additives… that are promoted as ‘healthier’ when they are just nasty chemicals that harm your body. I advise anyone thinking to eat or drink low sugar, no sugar, low fat, no fat produce/products to research the ingredients before doing so.

FYI… this turned into a bit of a rant/lecture… I apologise 😂
Anything low fat, no fat, low sugar, no sugar is avoided like the plague in our house. Artificial sugars & additives are not good for the human body & create a craving for the product.
To test this for yourself if you regularly drinks an unhealthy amount of fizzy, diet or energy type drinks (more than two cans a day but even if you just drink one see how long you can go without having one) quit & go cold turkey. By this I mean NO more fizzy, energy or diet drinks for a few weeks. In replacement drink water or not from concentrate straight fruit juice.
within a few days you’ll potentially start to feel sick, dizzy, get a headache, crave the products you are cutting out, maybe start to feel shaky or get heart palpitations like someone withdrawing from alcohol would.
When I quit caffeine I went through serious withdrawals but I did drink A LOT of regular coffee & tea.
When I stopped eating McDonald’s it took me over a year to be able to go past a store without craving it! I caved after lockdown ended as I was destroyed from homeschooling & weak. Now I find myself having to start that process of withdrawal again as I know it isn’t a healthy food to put in your body due to how the food is processed.
At the end of the day if you don’t know what something is why would you put it in your body without 1st checking if it is safe to eat/drink?
Why would anyone implicitly trust companies who develop products purely to make themselves astronomical profits to worry about what long term danger to our bodies is from things they put into them to make us want their product.
Crazy to think that people are more worried about what is contained in the covid vaccine than foods & drinks these days.

@BreakorMake hi - I’m the same as you, not prediabetic but getting there - terrible response to carbs. Started keto and it’s changed my life; balanced during day, feels like slow release energy.

A bowl of rice is one of the highest carb foods you could have - who knew. But chicken/fish and green veg are AOK. Just wanted to say but obvs others may disagree.

What did you think was in rice? Protein and fat? Doesn't make it the devil though, large swathes of the world rely on rice and it's not correlated with higher diabetes prevalence.

I don't do keto - I physically can't consume the amount of fat necessary to sustain it long term but I'm low carb and eat mostly completely clean. I eat more fat than many people would consider good for me.

The carbs I do eat come mainly from cheese and veg. Not only have I lost weight (whilst not being in a calorie deficit due to fat consumption), I'm never 'starving' and have no cravings. My skin is better, I have no reactions to anything I eat, I sleep better and have more energy.

Last night, I had a small amount of homemade flat bread at a friend's for dinner and felt really ill all night and, tbh, still don't feel great now!

Agree! People label carbs as the devil but it’s not the food that’s the issue it’s the relationship with it that makes it “unhealthy”
rice is incredibly healthy

Low fat, low sugar, low kcal are all marketed as “better” just eat real food in moderation. Full fat yogurt and organic butter is way better than the messed with alternatives. Sweeteners, additives, flavourings 🤮 courgette spaghetti and cauliflower rice let’s not get started on that one 🤦🏻‍♀️

I dislike the terms clean and dirty for food.
Obviously there are foods (although very few going by this thread!) that are healthier or have better nutritional or digestive benefits eg a smoothie and a Mars bar might have the same calories and sugar but the smoothie would likely have vitamins and some other benefits. But the Mars bar isn't dirty. (Obviously a smoothie isn't great either going by this thread Blush)
I used to have an ED and never allowed myself anything with a certain amount of fat, never ate chocolate or cake etc.
Now I try to eat (reasonably) healthily but that still includes the occassional cake or a take away. Part of recovery was realising that I can include all sorts of things in my diet and I won't instantly become obese (I know its not just about weight btw)

I thought skimmed milk had something added to it to make it white because it's so thin it is actually a greenish colour?

It isn't less good for you. It just isn't good for you if you happen to be prediabetic or diabetic. Wholegrain bread puts my blood sugars up just as much as white bread. It's all carbs. Which are fine if you're not diabetic.

40% of the UK population over the age of 60 are thought to be diabetic or prediabetic.

I assume you are talking about Type 2 diabetes not Type 1? My DC is Type 1 and can eat any carbs as long as they are counted and insulin is given.

It irritated me when a pp said rice has "no nutritional value". Over half the world's population rely on it as a staple food and have done for thousands of years, mostly without becoming diabetic or obese. It's a huge part of my mother's culture. In her language the word "meal" means "rice". They have a single word for "food that isn't rice, that you eat with rice".

We love rice. No one in my mother's extended family is diabetic or obese, or have any diet related health problems. On my dad's side (European, drink a lot of wine), they have obesity, high blood pressure, and many more diet related problems.

Rice is fab. And most of the world's population would agree with me on this

Yes, it is carbs, which are an essential part of the diet. Rice is perfectly fine as part of a balanced diet. If you have to or choose to limit the carbs in your diet then you may not want to eat loads of it but there's nothing intrinsically unhealthy about it.

Their advertising campaign was that a mars a day helps you work, rest and play so under the guise it will give you energy to keep going / loosely healthy ....

The Beyond Meat / anything vegan meat replacement food is a con too. Marketed as healthy but in reality a monstrosity of industrialised slop with no nutritional value

@JillFromHolt Dried fruit is lethal for teeth. Ask any dentist! Raisins etc have so much sugar that sticks to teeth. You may as well give your child wine gums or a boiled sweet to suck.

Except that dried fruit is very high in iron and jelly tots are not.
