Things disguised as healthy...

A light hearted post but what are some things that are portrayed as healthy but aren't really ? My list is as follows...

Flavoured water
Most yoghurts
Yoghurt coated raisins
Most cereals
Fruit juices

Obviously we need to live a little but give us some that yiu think are purely just marketed to reel us in

Definitely Innocent Smoothies. Just because it's fruit doesn't mean it's good for you. Most have more sugar in them than a can of Coke 😲

Yes they definitely should be drunk in moderation, but at least the smoothie does contain vitamins and nutrients. A small glass is fine.

BreakorMake · 17/05/2022 20:38

Feck that re smoothies. I make the same one every day and have 200mls every morning. A few (max 5) strawberries, couple tablespoons blueberries, same amount of walnuts, a few handfuls of raw spinach and kale (aldi ready to eat pack), half an avocado, milled flax seeds, tablespoon of oats, one teaspoon of whey protein vanilla for flavour and water. Gorgeous. Now tell me what's wrong with that please?

Just ditch the takeaways, crisps, salted nuts, fish n chips, saturated fats, sweets, cakes and too much sugar and eat everything else that crosses your plate. You'll be fine and full. The occasional blow out of the above will not kill you either.

The term "healthy" refers to your body, not your food. That should read something like "nutritonally sound" or something. The obsession with all things healthy re food is not making many healthy at all.

Icabod · 17/05/2022 21:12

Just avoid processed food, eat in moderation, drink water and you will be fine.

Fixyourself · 17/05/2022 21:40

Meat.

bruffin · 17/05/2022 22:17

No thanks - Diet Coke all the way for me, can’t stand the stick ‘real thing’. Sometimes the diet things are better than the original
No, just , no!!

Diet drinks are disgusting, i got given a diet coke by mistake the other day and could tell in one sip. Waitress first said no it was the real thing but then came back and apologized , not even the rum could disguise the horrible taste

Pinkfluff76 · 17/05/2022 22:19

Muffins
granola bars
all dried fruits
flavoured yoghurt
anything low fat as to get the flavour back sugar is needed
anything with aspartame and those other weird sweeteners
I’m sure there’s loads more unfortunately
all cereals, no one should be eating cereal

Fixyourself · 17/05/2022 22:20

Milk made specifically for baby cows.

Willowsodyssey · 17/05/2022 22:31

What do you mean ‘everything has salt’? Buy everything in its natural state and cook it yourself-no salt unless you add it. Simple.

WouldBeGood · 17/05/2022 22:32

This thread has now got the food nutters on it. It’s a shame

WouldBeGood · 17/05/2022 22:33

Evil cereal? Eggs? Dairy? Smoothies? Meat?

Get a fucking grip

Oh FFS 🙄

DianaDoors · 17/05/2022 22:53

I still want to know what’s so bad about brown rice.

user1745 · 18/05/2022 02:43

I once saw a kind of "marshmallow" sandwich spread which boasted on the jar that it was "zero fat!" Yes, because it's 100% sugar, which is much, much worse than fat!!!!!!

soberfabulous · 18/05/2022 05:36

i appreciate that some shop bought smoothies are not healthy - but really?

how are home made ones not healthy?
i might put a handful of berries, plus a banana, spinach, flaxseed and spirulina into mine, whizz it up with water, drink it in one.

It's the fruit i would have eaten over a morning, with the added benefit of spinach - that i wouldn't bother with, plus the flaxseed and the spirulina, which have clear health benefits.

Can i recommend a great book? How not to Die by Michael Greger. Really easy read lots of practical tips. How food can reverse and prevent disease - fascinating. A lot of what we think we know about nutrition is wrong due to food companies aggressively marketing to us for years plus the government involvement.

EG in the US they wanted to suggest a 'No Meat Monday' - to reduce the pressure on public health services - the meat companies (who pay millions to the government in lobbying) went so nuts they had to cancel it!

Also - doctors get something like 2 hours of nutrition training in all of their years of training. They are far from being experts too!

Book is here: www.amazon.co.uk/How-Not-Die-Discover-scientifically-ebook/dp/B0114MO6IE

@HailAdrian when fruit is a blended up like that it's just a sugar fest. Your better eating a whole piece of fruit as a smoothie uses more fruit that you'd actually eat whole

@marshmallowmamma You go to slimming world don’t you?

@HailAdrian nothing wrong with a smoothie if you make it yourself with milk, Greek yog or natural yog, fantastic way to consume your 5 a day. Buy a pre made smoothie and it’s full of added sugar, also a smoothie from the stands usually add fruit juice and full fat products.

Agree with the fake vegan "meats". Can't believe people fall for it. I was watching a documentary on the famine in North Korea...they use soy bean oil to make a fake meat. Helped them get through the times when they're actually starving. And here in developed countries we are willingly eating something which others only eat during a famine. Absolutely unbelievable. Have a piece of grass fed steak topped with an egg. Will be much better for you!

I can only ever dream of a piece of grass fed steak.......... that NEVER ends up yellow stickered! Whereas that crapawful vegan meat almost always does

TheGetaway · 18/05/2022 07:11

I have never thought of vegan meat replacement products as healthy and don’t think they’re promoted as such.

marshmallowmamma · 18/05/2022 07:45

@HailAdrian nope, no slimming world member here.

Indeed. There is a lot of nonsense on this thread - my imagination is working overtime trying to imagine what some of you actually eat!

Almost everything I eat is on the list.
I'm pretty sure food threads are a magnet for ED sufferers.

queenofarles · 18/05/2022 09:23

Japan and South Korea are amongst the slimmest rich countries in The world and rice is a stable in every meal, food portions are smaller.
also countries with low BMI in Europe like Italy and Switzerland consume wheat products like bread/pasta in every meal too, I don’t think any of these countries are big on healthy snacks like protein bars , veggie crisps , juicing and smoothies .

Bunnyfuller · 18/05/2022 11:11

Ah! Splendid. Another sequel in MN snobbery: I know more about food and look down on EVERYTHING.

Rosscameasdoody · 18/05/2022 11:45

Since my partner was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I’ve been paying closer attention when food shopping and I agree - some things you would think are healthy are not - it’s been a real eye opener. Baked beans for example are generally regarded as one of your five a day veg, but there’s a lot of sugar in a standard tin. We don’t really buy much in the way of processed food - I used to buy low fat in an attempt to be healthy but after talking to the diabetic nurse I’ve stopped even that because there’s so much unhealthy stuff added to replace the fat content. Her advice was to just use healthy fats - just less of them. Cooking from scratch doesn’t have to be a faff if it’s kept simple, and I think it’s the only way to take control of things like fat, salt and sugar.
