Things disguised as healthy...

A light hearted post but what are some things that are portrayed as healthy but aren't really ? My list is as follows...

Flavoured water
Most yoghurts
Yoghurt coated raisins
Most cereals
Fruit juices

Obviously we need to live a little but give us some that yiu think are purely just marketed to reel us in

My 13 year old son has started having a banana smoothie for breakfast. It's made with 1 banana, a glass of milk and a spoonful of cocoa/chocolate powder.
He's not a big breakfast person and is making an effort to have something to keep him going.

That's a sensible smoothie and not more food than he could reasonably ingest in one go in its whole form.

At 13, teenagers often want to skip breakfast and eat not very nutritious foods later on, so that combo to start the day is sensible especially when compared to what teenagers would be attacted to instead.

(I'm in the everything in moderation camp anyway)

Well that is basically the book of Genesis and the basis of the world's major religions. Or was that what you were getting at and I'm just explaining your joke? Sorry, I often miss tone completely but it's especially difficult in this format.

Most things prepared in a NutriBullet - especially things with banana and/or avocado in - I put on 2 stone an a couple of months !

I have a smoothie every day with half an avocado, a banana, spinach, mango and ginger. Sometimes banana, strawberries and natural yogurt. All of those things are healthy. I am slim and healthy.
I really don't think smoothies are a problem. Overeating is and eating too much prosessed food.

@BobLep0nge it's not that they are unhealthy but fizzy flavoured water is no better than Diet Coke etc. All artificial sweetener. As I say we need to live a little but it's being mindful that things aren't always as they seem

You can get flavoured fizzy water with no artificial sweeteners (i include stevia in that)
Brands such as Dash, Aqualibra, Ugly are all zero calories as are pellegrino essenza, radnor infusions.

Oh for Christ's sake, a smoothie, even with nut butters and bananas isn't really going to be more than 300-400 calories. That's perfectly OK for breakfast.

Is there such a thing as 'bad' food? Surely if there was, then it would not be allowed to be sold as food at all.

Our metabolism needs all the food groups in order to function properly, in the right proportions. That's the hard bit.

Ultra processed food is designed to be addictive, and is poor nutritionally.

Rule of thumb is that if you read the ingredients and it sounds more like a lab than a pantry, then it probably isn't super fit for human digestion.

I try and limit ultra-processed food, but will happily plough through a tray of home made brownies etc. I don't focus on calories at all, just nutrition, with special regard to gut health.

My teen DD rarely has fruit or vegetables despite me having encouraged/pleaded/disguised/offered them for the last 15 years!! She's discovered she likes smoothies, especially a green innocent one. Even if it hasn't much sugar as a Mars bar, I'm hoping she might (along with the sugar) be getting some vitamins/nutrients from the fruit/veg that she might not otherwise get.
I wasted about 8 years of my life obsessing over calories and fat when I had an ED as a teen/early 20s so I try not to demonise any type of food, although I'm keen to try to eat foods that are less processed (butter, full fat Greek yoghurt, bakery bread etc) rather than the low fat or low calories equivalents.

Please explain what part is so unhealthy that it deserves that description:

"Mycoprotein, Yeast Extract, Egg White. Contains 2% or less of Pea Fiber, Calcium Chloride, Calcium Acetate, Onion, Sage, Sugar."

I'm also waiting on an explanation of why muesli is unhealthy.

Muesli is hugely variable in ingredients. Choose a good whole grain one with plenty of nuts and seeds, maybe a little bit of dried fruit, and it's a perfectly good start to the day. Buy one that's loaded with added sugar and it's not.

A banana, milk and cocoa smoothie is probably just fine. Personally, I'd add some raw oats to reduce the GI and (theoretically) make him feel fuller for longer. Just a dessert spoon full. And I guess a spoonful of peanut butter would be better than the chocolate powder, but I wouldn't be getting too worked up about that.

Oh, that's good. Yes, we tried with oats, but it's a bit thick for him then. Peanut butter is a firm NO!

Yeah, you need to watch the ratios. I put a couple.of.dessert spoons in and that's when making smoothies for whole family. Wouldn't add more than a tablespoon for him. Soaked.overnight even better.

Fairly sure that whatever the point of the story is, it isn't that women break rules to get at precious, delicious lemons. Mind you, I'm not a theologian either. And I can't even find the shrug emoticon.

And mushrooms are grown in manure and wood chips - quite unappetizing.

It's approved by Health Canada, but not by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency because the CFIA requires substitute foods to be fortified with certain nutrients to be approved.

That's perfectly OK for breakfast. it’s the sugar content , a bananas avocado and mangos smoothie is around 30g sugars, per serving, as supposed to half an avocado on sourdough toast which is between 3-4g sugars . with half a cup of berries it’s no more than 8g sugars in total , a much more filling meal.

bananas, mangos, avocados, yogurt , nut butters, are all good and very healthy , and you can eat them all in one day provided they are spaced out through out the day, it’s really just how and the quantity that we consume in one portion that is the culprit .
