Show me how you store your herbs and spices?

With the girls cooking more, and being more adventurous in the kitchen, our collection of herbs/spices/flavours/powders for various things has quickly outgrown the little shelf I have in here.

I wondered what other people use/how they store them? It needs to be something visually appealing - preferably still a shelf type set up - as I have no wall cupboards & all the others are full.

Tia!

I have a plastic container thing, I put it in a cupboard but you can have it out on the side. I have one for herbs and one for spices. Really cheap from BnM/home bargains

Magnetic pots on the side of the fridge.

nearlyspringyay · 15/05/2022 13:17

In a wooden tray thing on the windowsill

You say you don't have wall cupboards but if you have base units you could do what I have and attach a rack to the inside of the door. I added some labels from Etsy to mine too, just for prettyness!

I have a 1m wide pan drawer unit. Thé top one has 2 expanding cutlery inserts with a few jars, and then thé front has 5 or 6 Ikea jars. The bottom 2 have plastic boxes with whole spices.
From memory I have
Black pepper, white pepper, green and black cardomems, whole mace, ground mace, whole coriander seed, ground coriander, whole and ground cloves, chilli powder, sechuan pepper, ground ginger, cumin seed, bay leaves, tumeric, 5 Spice powder, star anise, whole dried chillies, chilli flakes, dried sage, dried lovage. I also keep raisins, sultanas and currants there and bicarb and a huge drum of baking powder (can't get easily in France) bay leaves, ground almonds and dessicated coconut.

I may have missed some

That's all!

I use a drawer.

WakeWaterWalk · 15/05/2022 13:25

I find the little supermarket jars shed ground spice. Is there a better option?

Norgie · 15/05/2022 15:10

Mine are gathering dust unused in the back of the cupboard in a plastic container.

FlowerArranger · 15/05/2022 15:15

I have 3 plastic baskets in an easily accessible cupboard. One for curry spices, one for Asian flavourings, and one for herbs.

So if, say, I'm making a curry, I just pull out the curry basket and everything is right there.

I've got four sets of the small Really Useful Boxes sets. They are food safe, and hold a decent amount in each wee box.

Allsloppy · 15/05/2022 15:34

I have mine on a lazy Susan

I need to buy some rounded plastic boxes for my herbs. I don't know which ones to go for.

mubarak86 · 15/05/2022 15:37

I use a lot of spices so buy large bags from an Asian supermarket and decant them into empty jam jars, which are on an open shelf. If you are planning on doing a decent amount of cooking don't bother buying the supermarket spice jars, there's literally only a couple of portions in each jar.

This is what we have. Works pretty well!

In a few of those cheap spice racks from Ikea, on the back of the pantry door.

Rummikub · 15/05/2022 15:44

In jam jars in a shelf in cupboard of the ones I buy in bulk and use regularly.
For the ones I use less often they are stacked in a cut down magazine file.

i like that wire stack set up pp had shown.

lucysmam · 15/05/2022 19:29

Hmm, I think the base units we have are too full for a rack on the inside of the door. & the pantry door already holds a variety of things.

I'll keep looking for now - my kitchen's stupidly designed & seriously lacking proper storage 🙄

Although; maybe those ikea racks would do the job & I did want to nip to ikea for some office type storage at some point.

We are limited on space , though I love herbs so I use a drawer then the plastic pouches that look like kilner jars ?
They have a grip top for freshness and different colours for different sizes .
eBay have them ?

AllLopsided · 16/05/2022 00:49

Mine are in open boxes in my larder unit. Separated loosely into herbs, spices and baking ingredients.

Aria999 · 16/05/2022 00:59

I really do need to buy some plastic boxes.
Mine is currently really messy. Unfortunately the shape is wierd so I don't think many boxes will fit.
I was looking at these, but they aren't quite right. Any advice please?

Mine are on magnetic pots on the side of the fridge. I have a lot of spices so bulk bought tins and magnets then glued the magnets on and labelled with a label maker.

Happymama24 · 16/05/2022 07:18

I store mine a top shelf in a cupboard. They are organized in white rectangular plastic storage boxes, one each for herbs, spices etc...
