Show me how you store your herbs and spices?

With the girls cooking more, and being more adventurous in the kitchen, our collection of herbs/spices/flavours/powders for various things has quickly outgrown the little shelf I have in here.

I wondered what other people use/how they store them? It needs to be something visually appealing - preferably still a shelf type set up - as I have no wall cupboards & all the others are full.

Tia!

Bottom drawer (with the spare tea towels and tupperware ) - really handy as most have a little label on the lid telling you exactly what it is (or you can sharpie your own on). This works for me as my kitchen is teeeeny tiny - 3 cupboards only (1 food, 1 plates, 1 mugs/glasses/baking ingredients! Bit random, but it works for me:)

We have loads too so we got a set of shelves look like the top half of a Welsh dresser off of Facebook marketplace and mounted it the wall.

Looks nice, deep shelves so the spices can be 2 or 3 deep and we keep bottles of soy, oil, red wine vinegar etc all on there too.

Ours are in spice tins that I bought for the purpose years ago or reused small jars from things like capers - I like squat jars and tins that you can actually get a teaspoon in, I don't buy the likes of Schwartz jars anyway, but it gives me the rage that they come in packaging that is basically useless for the purpose for which it is designed.

They're then in a 'drawer within a drawer' that fits under the worktop in a base unit, this one:

You may or may not be able to retrofit this to an existing kitchen, I'm not sure.

I know you want your solution to look nice, but it is better for the spices to be stored in the dark, so 'artfully curated jars on a display rack' isn't good for the spices.

I use the plastic Mason jar style pouches (you can get them on Amazon) arranged alphabetically in a plastic basket. Total game changer as they take up far less space than the eclectic selection of jars I had before

Diplidocus4 · 16/05/2022 10:29

@Roundaboot that's what I meant earlier when I said kilner pouches !
Mason jar pouches !
Means I can bulk buy , weigh far less than teeny glass jars etc
Thank you (menopausal word struggle)

I use a big plastic basket in one of my deep drawers under the hob. It’s perfect as I can see all the jars from the top so it’s easy to find what I want and it’s within easy reach when I’m cooking. I also like it as I don’t have any visual clutter in the kitchen.

NiqueNique · 16/05/2022 10:46

True, as pp said it’s also much better for your herbs and spices to be stored away from light.

TroysMammy · 16/05/2022 15:37

This is mine. There is a soil pipe from the bathroom inside the house so a false cupboard was created with narrow shelves which were no good for anything else. I also have herbs and spices in clip top boxes in the utility room and a typed up list of what is in each box.

Oh I also do the same as a pp these days - I order spices and herbs in larger quantities these days. So I’ve got a hybrid set of old supermarket spice jars/jam & chutney jars/small biscuit tins/any useful container I come across. I basically use and re-use whatever I can. Since it’s in a drawer it doesn’t matter what it looks like (a bit mismatched so it’s not aesthetically curated but still very tidy and easy to navigate).

NiqueNique · 16/05/2022 15:48

Ugh I thought I’d already said ‘these days’ once but forgot to check before posting! 🙄🙄

Many dried herbs & spices don't keep for very long. I tend to buy mine as needed from a local Asian/Chinese shops and use what I need, & I'm afraid dispose of them after a month or so.
Obviously if you are using them frequently then this won't be an issue.

NiqueNique · 16/05/2022 16:14

Yes it doesn’t make sense to order larger amounts if you don’t get through it fairly quickly.

itsmeagainagain · 16/05/2022 16:18

Got these stacking things from Amazon fit perfectly in their cupboard… can get 9 in each rack

Picture is sideways sorry!

I use glass containers like these, except I have them labeled on the lid and on the bottom.

I keep them Lined up in a drawer much like this, but I think my labels are nicer

I have the indoor cupboard thing @HannahsCoat has. Love it!

HummingQuietly · 17/05/2022 12:03

@TroysMammy that's lovely. Also loving the Etsy labels pictured upthread - what a great idea.

I bought a wooden spice rack on eBay and asked them to custom make it fit the space I had. It was great until we reconfigured the kitchen.

I've now cleared out one of our base unit drawers to be a dedicated spice drawer, with tension rods dividing them into rows. I decided spices were in use daily and whatever I had to shift out of the kitchen to get them in, I would.
