I am addicted to Daily Mail - do I need help?

I know I probably should not be, but I get all my news from the Daily Mail, I am starting to worry that all my chit-chat is based on what I read... try as I might I cannot get myself onto a more dignified news source.

But is it wrong to have to pad out all your social banter with Meghan Markle, Wagatha Christie and Johnny Depp stories?

OP posts:

I do enjoy a scroll through the comments at times, the regulars are constantly offended by something which can be entertaining - using it as a legit news source though 😅😬

thisplaceisweird · 12/05/2022 13:58

There's a reason that 'daily mail reader' is never said in a nice way.

Honestly, OP, if that's where you are forming all of your opinions or using it as a base for your chit-chat, I wouldn't want to spend time with you. It's vile. Not only cruel and misogynistic but bigoted and prejudiced.

There was an online article posting pics of teenage girls on a boat in bikinis, the DM labelled the piece 'young exhibitionists'. Made me sick 🤢

I'd sooner have a lobotomy than read the shite in the Daily mail

chisanunian · 12/05/2022 14:27

Do you need help? Yes.

If you think that the DM is the fount of all news wisdom, or that any of the sleb gossip is actually even remotely based on the truth, then you need your brains examined!!😂

BOOTS52 · 12/05/2022 14:30

Yes need help urgently, I stopped reading it years ago as got sick of bikini body this and side boob and all the non celeb crap so now read Irish Journal and local news and now and again will peak at mirror online if bored but avoid daily mail as found it toxic and shit stirring paper.

BOOTS52 · 12/05/2022 14:38

I stopped looking at the Guardian because of their views on women as they do not see a problem with transwomen in a female only space. Prisons, hospitals where women are not safe from these men who still have their penis. I did enjoy the DM showbiz section but they are so racist.

The op is surely throwing her hands up that she reads it? It's a light post I think!!

thereisonlyoneofme · 12/05/2022 15:07

The Mail is the most popular at our local shop. I read it because my dad used to and Im addicted to Garfield ! Also they do a lot of good re fundraising etc, big push on for Ukraine, and often do campaigns that actually get results.

thereisonlyoneofme · 12/05/2022 15:08

Adding to day I do get news from elsewhere, im just a bit addicted to reading everything !

You definitely need help I'm afraid. Their skew is a nasty one filled with hate and intolerance, please at least get a balance so you can make informed arguments rather than pure propaganda.

YorkshireDude · 12/05/2022 19:14

Do people who think that the Daily Mail is harmful think that it should be forcibly closed down by an arm of the state? That's the direction the UK government is currently heading. The proposed new law will give powers to censor material that is considered 'harmful' but not illegal.

I would like to see some more meaningful regulation of the media and more meaningful consequences for printing lies - the type of thing where they have to publish a 'correction' and the correction is two inches square while the front page ruined someone's life is hopeless.

I despise the DM, and I do struggle not to think anyone who reads it must be, on some level, a nasty cunt, but I would not ban it.

carefullycourageous · 12/05/2022 19:23

I think the problem with reading it is you must get more nasty with every bit of toxic bilge you read, it is basically ingesting bitterness and hatred every day, it must drip into the psyche.

Buddhism advises care over what you read the same as care over what you eat.

Eh I love it for the comments alone. They can be pretty witty and snarky which I love. But there are some very insightful comments where I’ve learned something new too. I honestly don’t think it’s any worse than being on mumsnet or any other forum

That's already handled through the courts system isn't it? If someone sues for libel, or if there is an out of court settlement, then there's usually some kind of stipulation about printing a retraction and apology. They are just following a court order or settlement condition.

And it's hardly as if the Daily Mail have a monopoly on printing and broadcasting lies. Many other media organisations, including the BBC, have had to issue corrections and retractions.

Octopup · 12/05/2022 20:11

Oh dear. Yes, you most definitely do need help, and urgently. Your mind must need a serious detox. I suggest going cold turkey on the press except for one evening news TV/Radio broadcast daily.

I share Graeme Shimmin’s rating of the Daily Mail:
Quora: What is most unbiased paper in the Uk?

At the risk of being accused of whataboutery, The Guardian publishes some pretty awful content, such as this cartoon:

Guardian accused of printing ‘racist’ cartoon depicting Priti Patel as a bull

I think that is whataboutery. I'm sure all the papers print some things that are not nice, but the DM is vile and bitter in a much more consistent way.

Not handled adequately, that is why there are calls for Leveson 2.

I read the daily mail online edition. Don't read it cover to cover but I love the crossword puzzles. Only buy paper copy on a Saturday for the TV

mag.

They have excellent puzzles and the Saturday TV section is also very good.

Plenty of people would allege that The Guardian has consistently published anti-semitic opinion pieces. From that point of view, I don't see much difference between the Daily Mail and The Guardian. Both are consistent in hating on a specific group, the only difference is which group is consistently targeted.

Love the DM comments section Grin
