I am addicted to Daily Mail - do I need help?

I know I probably should not be, but I get all my news from the Daily Mail, I am starting to worry that all my chit-chat is based on what I read... try as I might I cannot get myself onto a more dignified news source.

But is it wrong to have to pad out all your social banter with Meghan Markle, Wagatha Christie and Johnny Depp stories?

I had a phase of reading the comments, not the articles.

It's a hideous paper full of propaganda. As long as you know that. Even the celebrity stuff isn't accurate.

An awful awful paper. I would suggest just not watching or reading any news. Bad for your health.

FrecklesMalone · 12/05/2022 06:49

Does it make you froth at the mouth like it does my annoying in-laws?
The problem with it is he might as well just mainline Tory diatribe. I absolutely couldn't be friends with someone that came out with the shit that the daily mail passes for news.

Tamzo85 · 12/05/2022 06:59

No worse than commenting and reading here often despite people trying to make it seem like there’s a huge difference. It’s just all gossip and people feeling good getting in their 2cents and proving themselves right (even though no minds are ever changed in comments sections).

Reading the Daily Mail is vulgar.

Bubbles1st · 12/05/2022 07:24

I added their site to my banned so I literally couldn't get on the site. It was a New Years resolution, I did well for months 2 years running. Now I just look occasionally and don't take anything as gospel and very rarely repeat anything I've seen!

Try and block yourself!

hattie43 · 12/05/2022 07:46

I love their Human interest stories .

Everyone bemoans the daily mail but it has a huge readership .

KangarooKenny · 12/05/2022 07:50

I like the layout and Bel Mooney, so I confess to being a reader.

mihimagna · 12/05/2022 07:52

I'm addicted to it as well. I've been an avid reader of the dailymail for over ten years. Remember that one article about spring fashion with the picture of Anna Wintour in the femail section? It was on there for about five years! What was that all about? I actually discovered mumsnet through the dailymail. Every month there's an article about some topic that's being discussed here on mumsnet. Last month it was about this girl, she went on a date with a guy with missing front teeth. She said he checked all the other boxes except for the teeth part. She was wondering if she was a shallow person. I like to read the comments section. I'm embarrased because I always hide it from my dh. The worse part is he knows I try to hide it from him. Am I the only one who feels this way?

It's the easiest and best set out online newspaper for ease of reading, it doesn't seem to mind my Adblocker and it doesn't constantly ask me to sign in, the app is particularly good, this is probably the reason they have so many online readers.

Lovemyheathershimmer · 12/05/2022 08:23

I love the comments too!

BitOutOfPractice · 12/05/2022 08:27

Doesn’t it bother you that they Really hate women?

I try with all my might to avoid clicking a DM link. I rarely know who the “celebs” are anyway.

they have got you right where they want you as their site is exceptionally well designed to make you addicted.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/05/2022 08:28

Yes you need help lol

BertieBotts · 12/05/2022 08:39

My grandma used to love it and I would read hers when I was there. The stories (I like the human interest ones) are written engagingly.

I do try to avoid it for any disaster stories as they always have intrusive or gory pictures and I don't want to see that kind of thing accidentally.

newnamethanks · 12/05/2022 08:39

As long as you know its a comic not a newspaper then eat your fill. Too much will make you very queasy.

Diverseopinions · 12/05/2022 08:46

It's understandable that you should want to wake up in the morning and read news, without having to pay for the pleasure. If newspapers have such a noble mission, why not try to find a way to make their offering free at the point of access.

What a shame we can't type 'The Times' in to the search engine and get a load of relevant and well-written info about what's going to happen to us, for free. As it is, many people read 'The Guardian' balance it with 'The Mail', enjoy some of the funny opinion pieces in DM and use stories as a starting point to do their own googling. You do have to ignore the bias and prejudice and it is wrong that the editorial team don't reply in meaningful fashion to emails of complaint.

emuloc · 12/05/2022 08:53

Its racist, so no thank you.

standoctor · 12/05/2022 08:55

The Mail does some very good investigative journalism.
As a rugby fan I am indebted to throe exposure of Saracens who cheated for over a decade.
It depends on your point of view as to what media you read/like.
Personally I do not bother now but would never in a zillion years read the woke left wing PC drivel in the Guardian or the Observer or Mirror. Other people do because that is their own personal bent.

Why ask for other people's approval
It is your life - enjoy doing what you do

Mango101 · 12/05/2022 09:11

OP - when you say you use if for all your news, do you mean news or gossip ? It's pretty scarily extreme right wing/populist.

Squillerman · 12/05/2022 09:31

I’m addicted to the showbiz section, have been for a few years. It’s like my little escapism from reality. Some people watch crap on TV like love island to achieve this, I don’t watch any crap at all really but do read gossipy crap on there instead. I used to read Perez Hilton’s website years ago which again was a guilty pleasure.

I will add a caveat that I’m educated and read the actual news too from various sources but find the comments section on DM funny at times.

They have a wide readership because they lie, use sensationalist headlines and pander to unfounded fears (particularly classism, xenophobia, racism and sexism).

They are popular for a reason- mainly because other non tabloid papers are not prepared to lie for views, and take their standard of journalism and code of ethics more seriously.

I’m in the industry and the DM is very dangerous. Please use your brain and think carefully about your contribution to their popularity by frequently visiting their site, because they really do influence popular opinion in a negative way.

YorkshireDude · 12/05/2022 12:23

If anyone is hoping for complete, honest, unbiased coverage of world events from the mainstream media, they'll be very disappointed.

Why has Russia-Ukraine had months of wall to wall coverage, while Yemen-Saudi Arabia has had almost no coverage at all?

Tamzo85 · 12/05/2022 12:42

@LateAF

Oh please other news outlets lie all the time and also slant so much they might as well be lying. They are also heavily biased against all kinds. I mean the Gaurdian must be one of the most biased news outlets to have ever existed in “free” society.

I say this from within the industry (not affiliated to any of the papers). All papers are biased but few make a business model out of lying. Defamation lawyers in the UK would be skint without the likes of the DM and the Sun.

BalloonsAndWhistles · 12/05/2022 13:46

Don’t worry about it. The comments section can be hilarious. In fact some articles I just scroll
straight to the comments because I know they’re going to be awesome 👏
