How much summer clothing do you buy your dc?

Went through all the kids summer stuff from last year and lots has been outgrown and needs replacing. I have 3 dc but don’t hand down between them as girl, boy, girl and I feel it’s very unfair if youngest dd was dressed in oldest dd’s cast off while dd1 and ds have all new. My question is how much is enough? I am trying to cut down a bit so thinking 14 outfits plus beach wear for holidays but wondering what the average is.

I don't buy specific summer stuff apart from shorts as dc wear t'shirts under jumpers and dresses with tights all year round.

tuliplover · 11/05/2022 10:32

14 outfits? Is that like ten things worn in different combinations?
I think my kids had two or three shorts, half dozen t shirts, a pair of sandals, couple swimsuits each, couple skirts/couple summer dresses for my daughter, some joggers for my son. Couple sweatshirts/jumpers. Some of these could be worn other seasons obviously.

TedOnTheBed · 11/05/2022 10:43

For example youngest dd is 10 so far she/I have picked
*5 pairs of denim shorts in various colours
*4 pairs cycling shorts (for the garden/lazy days not to wear in public)
*3 co-ord sets (cotton shorts/skirt with matching tops)
*7 sundresses
*4 playsuits
*1 jumpsuit
*10 new T-shirts (has 4 or 5 still ok ones rest have seen better days)
*1 set of denim dungarees
*5 vest tops
*5 cardigans
*1 denim jacket in light wash
*1 denim jacket in pink
*2 pairs of sandals one white one pink

That’s is less than I would normally buy, we are lucky enough to be having two fortnight holidays in the sun this summer.

Wow, that’s a lot of clothes. I thought I bought a lot for my DC but that is really a lot. Do they need so much? You don’t get very long wear out of summer clothes in this country

Is this a joke?

TedOnTheBed · 11/05/2022 10:50

@LampBookPicture why would it be a joke? I was asking what the average is as I think I might be over buying.

Bloody hell! That’s a tonne of clothes! When do they wear them?!

In that case I'd say yes. You are definitely over buying. It's a ridiculous amount of clothes for a child.

TedOnTheBed · 11/05/2022 10:53

They are worn all summer so May half term through to end of September and then again October half term if we go away again. I was looking for what amount of clothing is normal/acceptable as I think I probably over buy for my dc.

Akire · 11/05/2022 10:58

Just counting bottoms and outfits that’s 25 sets if wears once. If we have good summer over 4months she get to wear each outfit 4/5 times before it’s autumn! Tops can be worn all year it depends how the dress are cut if you can wear with tights and cardigans. You could easily get rid of half and still have plenty to do no washing for a fortnight.

catsonahottinroof · 11/05/2022 10:58

That sounds a lot to me. I stopped buying many clothes once mine started school and wore uniform most of the year. They might have had (on average) a couple of summer dresses, 2-3 pairs of shorts, a skirt, sandals/summer shoes, 2-3 cardigans/hoodies, 7-8 tops, 2 swimming costumes, and then whatever trousers they had from winter.
As someone else said, there often isn't that much of a summer so you shouldn't need much more than a week's worth of clothes (maybe more if going abroad).
5 pairs of denim shorts definitely sounds too much as they are the sort of thing that don't need washing too often - you could wear the same pair all week just with different tops.

BertieBotts · 11/05/2022 11:00

It's a lot. I have boys so to keep it simple they just have shorts, t shirts and swimming stuff, sun hats and sandals.

They can wear their hoodies from the winter drawer and longer lightweight trousers on cooler days.

My kids go through t shirts so they probably have about 10. Shorts would be maybe 6-8 pairs. At least two if not three sun hats as they're cheap and get lost easily, can also leave one at nursery/school then. One set of swimming stuff, except for the year an overenthusiastic SIL bought DS1 about 6 pairs of swimming trunks!

BertieBotts · 11/05/2022 11:00

We don't have school uniform so do need the clothes for during the week too.

MsMiaWallace · 11/05/2022 11:03

Is it for a holiday abroad?
I don't think it's too much but I buy my kids loads as they get through loads!!

declutteringmymind · 11/05/2022 11:06

It's sounds fine to me. More that what you strictly need but makes life easier re:washing and matching up things. The only unreasonable thing about it is that you don't hand them down. I do and it means I don't feel too guilty about buying extra unnecessary items or paying extra for quality items.

TedOnTheBed · 11/05/2022 11:07

We are going abroad twice for a fortnight each time, this is where I start to panic they don’t have enough. We go to Tui splash world/holiday park type places because of the kids so they do wear swim suit a lot but I pack 6 bikinis with matching cover ups, 14 evening outfits and 7 day time outfits for trips out the hotel. Reading these replies I think I am over worrying and buying to much, the crazy thing is I wash everyday anyway at home as they have clean clothes daily.

I have just spent a bit of money to replace a lot of DCs stuff, as DD in particular has had a growth spurt over the last year and none of her summer clothes from last year fit. DS needed a fair bit too.

to be truthful, I have bought them slightly big so that they should last until next year too.

So I would say, if you can afford to spend it so they have a good stock and its of good quality and wont need replacing in a few weeks/months.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 11/05/2022 11:08

I dont think in terms of outfits, just individual items, so for DD approximately:
Several tshirts / short-sleeved shirts
A few tank tops
A few shorts (jogger type)
A few cropped leggings
A couple of dresses
A light jacket
Short socks
Summer PJs
Sports sandals
Swimming costume

If we had an event, I'd also get a nice dress and nice sandals and a cardigan.

McConkeysPlate · 11/05/2022 11:08

Usually a pack of 3 shorts and pack of 3 T-shirts. New swimsuit and new sandals. And we hand down as much as possible

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/05/2022 11:10

I don't do a specific summer or winter shop, but I add to their wardrobes bits and bobs as they outgrow or wear out stuff.

We have an abroad holiday booked at the end of summer so I may well buy a couple of playsuits at the start of the school holidays so she can wear them then and while away, but other than that, I just replace stuff as its outgrown.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 11/05/2022 11:10

My paragraph returns vanished for some reason, sorry

That seems a ridiculous amount of clothes!

DD has 3 summer dresses, 1 pair of denim shorts, 1 playsuit, 3 pairs of cotton shorts and 10 t shirts.

She has 'winter' leggings and long sleeve tops which still fit her, and jumpers and cardigans as well (about 10 pairs of leggings, 4 jumpers and 2 cardigans).

Its almost exclusively second hand as well.

JurasicPerks · 11/05/2022 11:11

That sounds like a massive amount.
DS probably has 5 pairs of shorts (he doesn't wear trousers, so has one pair of his brothers outgrown ones), 7 or 8 teeshirts, and 2 jumpers.
Probably topped up with next size up just before a holiday, then the smaller stuff sent to charity shop after the summer holidays.

TedOnTheBed · 11/05/2022 11:11

@declutteringmymind I don’t hand down eldest dd is 15 soon to be 16 next month, middle child is a boy and just turned 13 so wouldn’t be seen dead in his sisters hand me downs and youngest just turned 10 so there is a 6 year gap between the girls. Girls fashions change and it’s a long time to store clothes plus I would feel incredibly guilty buying for two out of three of them.
