How much butter?

We love butter in this house. Cannot deal with any butter substitutes, or spreads etc although. We are trying to be sensible with our food shopping spends just now and butter is costing a lot. We bought a 250g block of butter on Monday and it's almost 75% gone already!!!! Is that too much better for a family of 4 who all eat sandwiches and toast every day?!?

As long as you're not all suffering with cholestrol issues, use as much butter as you want and channel this worry into something more productive!

I find the blocks do disappear fast, it's partly because it's so hard, you use more than needed as it doesn't spread as thinnly! Would you use a tub of Spreadable butter instead? For not a lot more than the block you get double the amount, it can still be difficult to spread straight from the fridge but at room temp its easier to use.
We are real butter fans in this house too but I but tesco or lidls own brand for around £2.25 for a 500g tub.

I agree with the comment about using more if it's too hard to spread. In the summer we use normal butter and keep it at room temperature, but the rest of the year, we buy M&S softer pure butter in a tub which is £3.80 for 500g. We used to get a soft block butter from Home Bargains for £1.29 for 250 g.

Can't say how much we use as it varies so much, but a single pack can last weeks sometimes if we're not eating sandwiches or toast, or can go through a couple of packs a week if we are (tend to go in phases) and I also bake.

I bought a block of Muller butter from coop for £1.60 compared to a 500g tub of spreadable Lurpak for 5.20 so it was much cheaper! But if it isn't lasting a long it's probably not worth it 😂

Spreadable butter just isn’t the same in my opinion. I get through a block a week by myself. (I buy the spreadable for everyone else 😅)

Haha I started a family poll on this last year as I was convinced we were using way more butter than the average family and it’s bloody expensive!
we get through 4 blocks a week, sometimes we even run out of that.
family of 5, we cook and bake a lot and I refuse to switch to any kind of spread (unless for certain sponge cakes where it’s beneficial).

yes it will. Dietary cholesterol doesn’t affect your cholesterol but saturated fat (which butter is very high in) does.

I know this as I’ve had to cut out butter and from my diet and I really miss it! Probably shouldn’t be on a thread discussing how delicious butter is.

That sounds like a lot of saturated fat. NHS website says:
The government recommends that:


  • men should not eat more than 30g of saturated fat a day

  • women should not eat more than 20g of saturated fat a day

  • children should have less


We use Flora and are still using up a tub I bought in February. We don’t butter sandwiches, we usually have hummus in them which wouldn’t go.

Family of three, we get through a block and a bit a week, I only buy Kerry Gold, it took me years to get DH off those dreadful spreadable butter type thingies and now I have him onside, I make sure I never run out of butter.

I like my butter on cold sourdough toast and I like it so thick that I can see my teeth marks. 😂

Baking for a living so we get through a load of butter. Price has shot up massively unfortunately. I refuse to use margarine.

I’ve just worked out how much saturated fat that would be and it’s almost half your allowance on butter alone!
75% of 250g block over 3 days is 15.6g a day per person. Lurpak butter is 52g sat fat per 100g so that’s just over 8g vs women’s RDA of 20g before you even consider the sandwich filling and whatever else you’re eating that day.

Probably about what we get through, tho I do cook with it too.
I'd say we get through 2-3 blocks a week. No margarine in this house either.

That heathline link is very interesting and I totally agree with it. I detest margerine, used to eat my bread dry as a kid rather than eat it! For over 40 years I've only had butter in my house and I'm very overweight (nothing to do with the butter), had cholesterol measured at work along with two very slim colleagues who ate really healthily, like salads and yoghurt every day for lunch, mine was 3.7 and theirs were high, one of them went on statins. I've known lots of slim patients with strokes/heart attacks from clogged up arteries including another really slim colleague and often wondered about it, that link explains it clearly so thanks for that!
Back to topic😂 my children insist on lurpak spreadable but I can taste the oil in that so have a block of hard organic butter to myself, it tends to last a full month, I also love it on cold toast made with good bread🥖🍞😋

We use almost 2 blocks a week, that’s just me, DH and toddler DD. But DH and I are at home for all meals and DD always has something like toast or bagel with butter on after nursery.

I use a block a week and I live alone. I would not use those spreadable concoctions which are just full of nasty ingredients. I prefer just butter or olive oil.

The whole cholesterol discussion is very tricky as most doctors are still reciting old flawed information. There's a very interesting Dr called Dr Aseem Malhotra whose lectures on YouTube made me stop worrying about cholesterol

If it was me I’d cut back on the bread before I cut back on the butter (but that’s just me, I do better on low carb/low GI).

Yes butter is a must for me …just had marmite toast 😋would rather have dry bread than marg or butter substitutes ! When just husband and I at home we probably use 1block over a week !

I bought 2 blocks of muller butter for £3.50 bundle at Morrisons. Try and see if you can get a similar offer or buy a case from a wholesaler like Costco.

I buy a 250g block every week, it usually lasts about a week and a half for four of us but we don't tend to eat much bread so I mostly use it in cooking. Has to be proper butter.
