Commando crawling... how long?

WestminsterCrabby · 10/05/2022 17:53

DD been army crawling for a week or two. Shes 9 months next week.

According to my mother she should DEFINITELY be hands and knees crawling by now and I should be doing more to help her.

Did anyone else have army crawlers? Did they progress to 'proper' crawling easily enough or did you have to help? I'm inclined to just leave her, she seems happy enough and can get from A&B so what does it matter??

A to B, rather.

It doesn't matter :)

DS1 did army crawling for a bit, I can't actually remember how long, probably a couple of weeks. It's early for any kind of movement so whatever it is it doesn't really matter.

Hugasauras · 10/05/2022 17:55

Just leave her, she'll figure it out. DD hadn't even rolled at 9 months! She was a very lazy baby Grin She just sat there like the queen. She did crawl eventually and walked at 14 months and is totally normal in terms of gross motor skills at 3.

She'll figure it out in her own time.

Do yourself a favour and don't listen to the 'she should be' comments by anyone other than her HV.

NannyGythaOgg · 10/05/2022 19:31

My daughter was walking unaided at 8 months, my son wasn't even rolling over, my sister only ever bottom shuffled until 18 months.

It really doesn't matter and they don't need any help, just opportunity to mobilise in whatever way comes naturally to them.

The only one that ever worried me was a little girl in hospital who had been kept strapped in a pram or pushchair all her waking hours and at 18 months did not know how to mobilise at all.

My eldest never went on hands and knees. Commando shuffle to walking at 11 months.

AnyFucker · 10/05/2022 19:38

She only rolled from her back a week or two ago as well!

She seems pretty happy just sitting there with her toys tbh, there doesn't seem to be any urgency to get moving 😆

oft fgs ! 9 months? Ages to be "worried" yet hahha welcome to YourFamilysOpionionOfEveryParentingMove
my DC didnt comando until exactly 12 months. Shuffled about another 3 weeks odd and now- OFF. I wish for the none mobile days again!!

some babies dont do any, and just get up and walk eventually !

Mooserp · 10/05/2022 19:50

I had 1 who did regular crawling and walked at 12 months and the other did commando and went straight to walking at 10 months.

Twizbe · 10/05/2022 19:51

Have a look at Bluey baby race on you tube.

It will help.

FWIW neither of mine crawled until 11 months. They didn't even move. It was bliss.

romdowa · 10/05/2022 19:54

My brother never crawled at all. Walked before his first birthday, I was walking around 9 months. Every baby is different so I wouldn't worry too much

DelphiniumBlue · 10/05/2022 19:55

I don't recall any of my 3 crawling at all, even though DS1 didn't walk till about 14 months. A bit of bottom shuffling and that was it. Some babies just don't go through a crawling stage.

Mrsjayy · 10/05/2022 20:02

My youngest started rolling then commando crawling then a combo of the 2,she never crawled on hands and knees she walked at 15 months, try and not worry.

Mrsjayy · 10/05/2022 20:03

Dd also bum shuffled.

WestminsterCrabby · 10/05/2022 20:10

The mad thing is, my younger sister was super slow to do absolutely everything when she was a baby. She is now insanely clever and sporty, much more so than 'early for everything' baby me. So she must KNOW that it doesnt matter in the grand scheme of life, but hey ho.

Make the most of it while you can!! Some babies don’t crawl at all, I didn’t as a child. The later they walk and crawl, the easier things are for you!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/05/2022 20:16

My DS1 didn't properly 'crawl' until after he could walk. DS2 crawled for months before he even tried to walk. All children are different.

BertieBotts · 10/05/2022 20:33

How are you supposed to help her anyway? She has to do it by herself and in her own time. You can't really help a baby learn milestones. You could hinder them if you're really restricting their movement or something but I'm sure you're not doing that! It's not a competition or a measure of parenting.

Plus, if you're older than 30 or so, you probably slept on your front. Since back sleeping has been advised, the milestones of crawling, sitting and rolling have globally shifted later, even with tummy time. That has been found to not be a problem - it doesn't affect the development of anything else, nor the timescale of later milestones. But she might be thinking oh 9 months is so late to crawl, compared to 1980s babies who were maybe doing it at 6-8 months. Compared to 2020s babies though, your daughter is perfectly normal.

WestminsterCrabby · 11/05/2022 07:18

Thats interesting @BertieBotts I didnt think of it that way!

Mine didn't commando crawl until 10 months.

3 weeks later she now crawls 'properly'.

My oldest was walking by 10 months, she was diagnosed with ASD age 7.

Your baby's doing great op 😊

RedToothBrush · 11/05/2022 07:34

DS never crawled. He would lie on his back and shuffle from 3 or 4 months. He cruised early - think he was about 5 or 6 months but only walked unaided at about 14months.

He didn't need to crawl was the point. He figured out how to get around in his own way, usually with minimum fuss but so he could also always see us.

If anything the not crawling was him being smart and figuring out the problem on his own terms.

Your mother is talking out of her behind. She's trying to be competitive.

RedToothBrush · 11/05/2022 07:36

DS also never rolled and tummy time was merely traumatic for him.

This stuff is nonsense.

Frazzled2207 · 11/05/2022 07:38

I never crawled at al according to my mother. I bum shuffled and then walked. Turned out ok.

Campervangirl · 11/05/2022 07:46

Yeah it doesn't matter, she'll stop when she's ready, my DD went everywhere backwards at least your DD is heading is heading in the right direction 😂
On a side note I still "army crawl", usually when someone is knocking at the door that I don't want to see and I'm in my 50s 😂
