Dreadful UTI - what to do (probably TMI)

listsandbudgets · 09/05/2022 13:42

Start by saying I've tried phoning my GP - spent 25 minutes in the queue and by the time I got through no appointments left and try again tomorrow Sad

I've got some kind of nasty UTI. Exhausted and if anything slightly disorientated. Slight fever. Lower back pains. Nausea. Usually nasty symptoms of rushing to loo every 5 minutes almost constant discomfort / sort of fizzy feeling especially when weeing . Urine is colour of red wine so clearly full of blood and lots of blood when I wipe and also dribbling blood beween my endless toilet visits - definitely not period

I'm drinking loads of water, having horrible cranberry juice, pain killers, DP got some cystitis stuff from chemist but in pain and sick of rushing to toilet. Nothing helping.

Phoned 111 and told them all this and was told me to see my GP tomorrow - they said I can't go to walk in without appointment but wouldn't book me one (sure it used to be possible to do that???) Can hardly got to A&E its only a urine infection but my god I feel miserable.

Anything else I can do to help.. please. I feel sh*t.

You're definitely doing the right thing. Can't believe your dr wouldn't even give you an appointment.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 09/05/2022 17:31

No help for now so I hope you're getting sorted OP. For the future you can order antibiotics for UTIs online to keep in emergencies. I make sure I have some in the cupboard just in case after getting caught out on holiday once. Flowers

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 09/05/2022 17:32

Just seen your update OP. Definitely doing the right thing- hope you're better soon.

I had this before the pandemic and went to walk in. I would do the same now as the pain was so bad I was in tears.

Bickles · 09/05/2022 17:42

Hope you get seen quickly and feel better soon OP.
FWIW I am another who has had 100s of UTIs, I have scarring on my kidneys from them and am on long term medication. I have never had visible blood in my urine- that is definitely an A&E job.

BoDerek · 09/05/2022 17:46

You poor thing, that sounds so
miserable. I’m glad to read you’re going to A&E. I’m surprised by the advice you received. I was told off for not going in sooner as it can lead to sepsis.

Afterfire · 09/05/2022 17:47

As someone who suffers with recurrent UTIs and kidney issues and takes daily life long antibiotics- you’re doing the right thing going to A and E. To have that much blood in your urine etc it needs medical attention urgently.

MarJau26 · 09/05/2022 17:53

You did the right thing. Poor you, a uti is just one of the most awful things! It sounds like you need treatment urgently and antibiotics maybe. Honestly this is why I'm so grateful for private medical. I had the most awful UTI, ds was ill and dh was at work. I contacted the online gp, got a prescription within an hour and a friend picked it up for me. There was no way I could have made it to AE with ds and sitting around in pain for hours. I really hope you feel better soon.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 09/05/2022 17:54

Another frequent UTIer here. You absolutely need to be seen today or started on antibiotics as a minimum. The surgery should have found someone who could prescribe them.

packedlunches · 09/05/2022 17:54

How are you now OP? Have you been seen?

almondbran · 09/05/2022 17:56

Sounds horrendous, hope they sort you out quickly

RitaFaircloughsWig · 09/05/2022 18:03

I know that our A and E now regard things like this as "something that should be dealt with by a GP" and they do have GPs but not after hours. 111 can book an appointment for you with an A and E GP the next day or they can get someone to call you if it is really bad. I used to suffer from this and my GP would allow me to keep a dose of antibiotics at home in the event of this at weekends, Bank holidays etc. I once had one with no back up which was so bad it made me delirious and gave me a panic attack. They are horrible things. I try to delay if I have to by drinking endless coffee and taking paracetemol.

TragicMuse · 09/05/2022 18:10

Fingers crossed for you OP. I've suffered badly in the past and have every sympathy.

justasking111 · 09/05/2022 18:32

Glad you went such a shame GP couldn't treat you

HollowTalk · 09/05/2022 18:39

That sounds horrendous. I hope you manage to see someone at the hospital.

Passanotherjaffacake · 09/05/2022 20:34

Used to have loads of these as your describe then OP. Was like weeing a knife! Used to go straight up into my kidneys too and they will check for that if you have back pain. Had loads of blood, sometimes just releasing a little clot of blood. Used to make me cry in pain.

I ended up having two urethral dilations - never had a UTI since. They were private though as NHS told me I would just have to suffer (this was after 2 years of strong antibiotic treatment). life changing!

Hope you get sorted out. I used to drink pints of water, oj and mint tea during a bout and that helped as everything coming out was less concentrated. Also used to stuff a hot water bottle between my legs (like right up there!) and that used to really, really help relax things and reduce the pain whilst you get the antibiotics.

so much good luck OP!

mawik · 09/05/2022 22:38

I hope that A&E have sorted you out, back in October, I had similar symptoms, I am prone to kidney stones, so thought that it would pass! 2 days later was blue lighted to hospital, I had sepsis, and ended up having a stent fitted! I have had a very long and painful recovery.

Knifer · 10/05/2022 06:50

Are you alright OP?

DeskInUse · 10/05/2022 07:17

Hope you've got some antibiotics op. I had exactly the same and ended up walking to a&e, I got antibiotics straight away and they started working almost straight away.

ChloeHel · 10/05/2022 07:48

Oh gosh this sounds awful, before I read your second post I was going to say get yourself straight to A&E! So I’m glad you went and I hope you were treated and aren’t in as much pain!

For future reference I wouldn’t bother with the cranberry juice, it doesn’t actually help with a UTI once you already have one and it is mildly acidic so could irritate the bladder more! If you are prone to UTI’s you could drink a small amount of cranberry juice daily or take tablets as there is some research to say it thickens the wall of the bladder to prevent them!

You can also go to some pharmacies that offer the UTI antibiotic service - Boots offer it, and you can get antibiotics via them, however with your symptoms the pharmacist would have referred!!

scruffanddodge · 10/05/2022 07:55

I hope you got antibiotics OP and they are starting to work for you.

listsandbudgets · 10/05/2022 10:15

Sorry for lack of update, I had to wait for ages and they told me I should have seen GP. I told them what I've said above that 111 told me I couldn't go to walk in without appointment (still not sure why) and GP couldn't see me.... then they asked for a urine sample nurse took one look and decided before even testing it they would deal with me after all.. They were quite apologetic saying they get some many people coming in with minor UTIs that could be initially treated with extra fluid intake and OTC medication and see GP until next day they'd started to get irritated about it.

AB drip, obs, more urine samples - lucky I needed toilet so often Grin and sent home last last night with more antibiotics and advise to drink plenty of fluids. Still feel rubbish but not seeing so much of the toilet and a lot less blood. Need to take another sample to GP on Thursday.

Thanks for encouraging me to go.

RitaFaircloughsWig · 10/05/2022 10:23

Pleased to hear that .Did they give you Nitrofurantoin? If UTIs are something you get regularly ask them for some investigation and a supply to have at home.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 10/05/2022 10:38

aah I thought the red wine wee would do it, sorry for the nurse that the system is so awful it took for it for them to take you seriously

Glad you've had treatment, hope you start feeling better soon

Regularsizedrudy · 10/05/2022 11:10

Get more shirty with your GP. Tell them you need an emergency appointment due to the pain.
