Is your waist half your weight?

Read online that your waist measurement in inches should be half your weight in kgs... does this pan for everyone?

I'm hourglass and have always been heavier than i look (I'm also overweight and look it atm so I'm not using excuses haha) my weight in kgs is around 76kg (12st) and my natural waist is 32. This seems quite a lot smaller than the 38 that the calculation would suggest, which seems odd when i am so overweight and unfit atm.

Do your measurements fit the calculation? Interested to see if its just rubbish or if I'm an anomaly 🤣

Is there a similar formula for men? I’m presuming the fat carried through their abdominal regional is just as detrimental to internal organs as it is for women

A quick Google suggests it is.
Not sure this will be gladsome news for DH...

noborisno · 08/05/2022 18:36

Oh, yes, it is now you mention it. Not too far off accurate I would say. I was underweight for about three years too and this confirms that too.

VaddaABeetch · 08/05/2022 18:42

weight/waist size really doesn’t make sense when many of you are mixing metric & imperial!!

Where I'm from, ideal weight is considered to be the cms over 1 m take away 10.
So
167 cms- weight should be 57
150 cms -weight should be 40

No idea who decided that or where it comes from. I've always been fat by those standards.Grin

Not right at 5'8" that I should be recommended a max. waist = 62 cm (24").

Fancy scales just now said I have 4% visceral fat which I reckon might be quite 'good'

You've misread Wanna - she's talking about weight (presumably in KG) not waist measurement.

Mind you it's still very challenging. At 5'4" that gives me a target of 8 stone 4 pounds if I've done the maths correctly, which is a BMI just under 20.

But Wanna doesn't say where she's from - if that's South or South East Asia then a lower target would be appropriate than for people of Northern European heritage.

AMBE123 · 08/05/2022 20:33

I thought it was meant to be that your waist should be no more half your height in inches. So if you are 5ft5" or 65" tall, a maximum healthy waist would be 32.5"

PortalooSunset · 08/05/2022 21:59

My waist in inches is less than half of my weight I kilograms, but 6 inches bigger than half my height in inches. I deff prefer op's way of measuring things 😅
Significantly overweight/obese btw.

incognitodorrito · 08/05/2022 22:01

Waist 27 inches, weight 58 kilos do sounds about right !

That's what I assumed, @AMBE123 and as my waist is less than half my height, I'm inclined to stick with this interpretation. Grin

Whoatealltheminieggs · 08/05/2022 22:54

I’m 5ft 10. Am I really only in 5 percent of women category for height? My waist is 32inches. Could do with losing some. Wear a size 12 jean

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/05/2022 23:11

It's half your height. Mine is about 2 inches over but I'm an apple albeit an extremely fit and strong one but I struggle to keep my waist slim. My stomach is flat though 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/05/2022 23:12

artisanbread · 08/05/2022 12:25

I don't have a waist. I'm 5'7, weigh less than 9 stone and still have a waist measurement of 29 inches. If I lose weight it comes off my face, arms, legs and boobs before my waistline. I know the mid-section.is the unhealthiest place to carry weight but I just can't lose any off there without becoming severely underweight!

You're an apple. I am too. It's a bloody pain in the arse

merryhouse · 08/05/2022 23:29

29 inches, 68-72ish kg (166cm, 5ft5)

I've always found it a particularly unhelpful rubric (dread to think what a waist of 83cm would be like) - I appear to be a classic hourglass

GiraffeInTheSky · 09/05/2022 01:21

My waist in cm is 40% of my height. My waist in inches is 49% of my weight.

I'm not sure this tells anybody much tbh! We are all different heights and shapes!

GiraffeInTheSky · 09/05/2022 01:30

I'm not sure it makes any sense though, the half your height thing. I mean, if that was correct according to the formula I could put 7 inches on around my waist and still be healthy! 🤣 I definitely wouldn't be!! 😧

ldontWanna · 09/05/2022 06:59

@lljkk sorry meant kgs so 57 kgs

That simply can't be true. Your waist in inches has to be the same percentage of your height in inches as your waist in cm is as your height in cm.

BMI or the OP's original mad weight vs waist formulation will vary according to units used but waist to height measurement is the same whether you use metric, imperial or a piece of string.

These threads frequently reveal worrying things about national numeracy.

BusterGonad · 09/05/2022 07:31

Surprisingly my waist is exactly half my height. I'm surprised as according to my BMI I'm 1 stone overweight. But at 5ft 10" and a size 16 I suppose I'm not hugely big even if I feel it!

BusterGonad · 09/05/2022 07:33

I mean my waist is slightly under my (double) height.

It is still useful though - it tells you that your body shape is less prone to putting weight on in more dangerous areas so you can be more relaxed about a BMI of 25/26 whereas someone who is more apple shaped may find that they carry concerning levels of abdominal fat at that weight and should aim lower.

I could have written your post....but then I hit peri-menopause.

*Thanks so much, but perhaps it's your reading comprehension that needs more attention.

I said that my waist is 40% of my HEIGHT. And my waist is 49% of my WEIGHT.

The units were only relevant because the comparisons others had made between waist measurement and weight were from inches (height) to kilos (weight) and it's odd to compare between two measurement systems.*

*I usually only use metric measurements and the other comparison PP made was from waist measurement (cm) to height (cm) so I made it clear in my post what I was referring to when I gave the percentages.

You carry on insulting people because you can't read. I have a degree in economics btw but thanks for your concern about my numeracy.* 🤣

PortiaFimbriata · 09/05/2022 14:15

Blimey, sorry Giraffe - I reread your post at least three times, and simply didn't clock that at all. This is probably where the OP went wrong. Either that or I shouldn't post before my second cup of coffee.

superplumb · 09/05/2022 19:06

Its height not weight. Otherwise those weight lifting folk would get odd results

BlueThursday · 09/05/2022 19:49

61” and 29” respectively so fairly bang on.
I weigh 9st7lb though so could do with losing the thighs 😭

Lol! Apology accepted, no worries. I get touchy when people question my maths. 🤓🤣
