Is your waist half your weight?

Read online that your waist measurement in inches should be half your weight in kgs... does this pan for everyone?

I'm hourglass and have always been heavier than i look (I'm also overweight and look it atm so I'm not using excuses haha) my weight in kgs is around 76kg (12st) and my natural waist is 32. This seems quite a lot smaller than the 38 that the calculation would suggest, which seems odd when i am so overweight and unfit atm.

Do your measurements fit the calculation? Interested to see if its just rubbish or if I'm an anomaly 🤣

Only just. 25 inches, 51kg.

I’ve never heard this before. It sounds as wildly inflexible as BMI.

Herejustforthisone · 08/05/2022 13:28

Oh it’s height? That makes more sense. My height is 66 inches. Well, 65.5.

ChatterMonkey · 08/05/2022 14:00

🤣🤣🤣 height makes more sense as a comparison... im 5'4.5", where does that leave me with my 32 inch waist...?

Very grateful for the extra 0.5cm on your height?

LaMarschallin · 08/05/2022 14:08

Sorry! 0.5 inch

😂
OP, If you know there's 12 inches in a foot surely you can work it out?
5'4 and a half = 64.5 inches tall so 32 is nearly exactly half, so you're ok (but borderline)

elbea · 08/05/2022 15:36

Surely this is a really unreliable test, my waist is less than half my height but I’m also just into the obese BMI category. I just don’t carry my weight around my waist.

ItOnlyAMovie · 08/05/2022 15:37

Where is waist? Like the thinnest bit? Above hips?

Simonjt · 08/05/2022 15:38

98kg and 32 inches.

is not half your height rather than half your weight? So 32 inch waist, 72.5 (yes the half matters!) height

I'm similar. 5ft 6ins, 10st and 29.5 inch waist, but I carry weight around my mid section. Skinny arms and legs like you. Whenever I've had a "healthy" waist measurement I've been very small and my GP told me I needed to put weight on. Also friends and family said I looked very fragile.

Yes, but that’s fine. Your waist measurement is less than half your height. So it’s healthy

LetHimHaveIt · 08/05/2022 15:48

I'm pretty overweight - at least two stone; approaching the 'obese' category - but I'm nearly 5 ft 9 and my waist is 31-2 ins.

OrangeBall · 08/05/2022 15:49

It's to do with carrying fat around your organs apparently. Problems if you're an apple

I'm an apple Grin

I have a normal BMI, I'm 5 ft 6, weigh 62-63kg but have a waist of 35 inches

I also have high cholesterol unfortunately

Shodan · 08/05/2022 15:51

5'8 (68 inches) tall , waist 32 inches and a stone (probably nearer 1.5 stone tbh) overweight. Hourglass figure.

If there was a thigh to height comparison or something I'd be buggered.

I thought that was the idea, though.
It's less healthy to carry your weight around your waist and abdomen than your hips and thighs.
I'm not sure what I weigh - last time it was done it was about 9.5 stone - and I'm 5' 7".
But I'm a definite apple (have been mistaken for being pregnant Shock) and my waist was 33", so only just okay.
Lost some weight (developed diabetes, so changed my diet quite a bit) but my waist is still 30".

Sorry! Basically repeated what everyone above me said: slow typing.

HappyMaltesers · 08/05/2022 16:17

Is waist measurement the sucked-in version, or the 'nobody is looking' one?

diamondpony80 · 08/05/2022 16:22

Not sure if it’s the best measurement to go by if you’re tall. I’m 5’9 so waist should be 34.5 inches, which for me would still be overweight.

NHS goes by a simple cut-off of 31.5 inches for all women of all heights and ethnicities which seems reasonable for women in the normal 5'2" - 5'10" range, but might be too generous for very short women and too challenging for six footers.

I'm not sure that's the 'normal' range. The average UK woman is just under 5 ft 4, so very much towards the bottom of that compass. Fewer than 5% of women are 5 ft 10 and above and all of them appear to be on MN, busily weighing 8 stone and averring that they 'don't look thin'.

Cameleongirl · 08/05/2022 16:55

Mine is less than half my height, but I’m a boyish figure, slim hips and I barely go in at the waist, I never have. I imagine an hourglass figure would have a much smaller waist than me.

But I’m still less than half by a few inches so I guess I’m OK by this calculation?!

Zilla1 · 08/05/2022 17:10

My waist is about half way to the top of my head which is about the same thing as height.

Miiaaoow · 08/05/2022 17:14

My waist is 3 inches more than my weight, but i currently have a BMI of 17 and don't exactly have a large waist, so if I lost 3 inches, I would look emaciated.

Did you type "weight" by mistake?
It's been established that it should be height.

ShagMeRiggins · 08/05/2022 17:39

Is there a similar formula for men? I’m presuming the fat carried through their abdominal regional is just as detrimental to internal organs as it is for women.

Ah, I didn’t know that. That makes more sense alright.
