Restaurants in London

It's my birthday soon. I would like to go out for lunch in London.

Has anyone been anywhere recently that they would recommend? As it's my birthday happy to pay a bit more. Has to be able to cater for coeliacs. There will be 3 of us. Ikoyi looks nice but not open at lunch on my birthday (a Wednesday)

Love all cuisines except Chinese.

Thanks in advance.

Are you looking for somewhere trendy / celeb shooting or a classics type place?

The food is the most important thing

Bob Bob Ricard as @LadyJGrey suggested is amazing fun, no under 16s though . We went to 10 Greek Street recently and thought the food delicious but not at all fancy. Everywhere we’ve eaten recently has checked our allergies once we’ve ordered. They know the risk they take if they mess these things up.

Good to hear

The entire menu at Indigo, One Aldwych is gluten free.

Sketch is AMAZING

Not been since they stopped doing the set lunch. Is it still delicious?

Hide Restaurant in Piccadilly. Enjoy!

Was lucky enough to go their for our anniversary in September- not sure the credit card can take it again! It was fantastic though.

This place is lovely, the owner is so friendly and the food is the best Lebanese I've ever eaten chamisse.com/

anchorbuttercakes · 07/05/2022 20:11

Pizarro at Royal Academy, Spring at Somerset House - had lovely lunches at both recently.

I enjoyed this too.

Other places I’ve eaten recently and would recommend:
Frenchie’s
Barrafina
Boca di Lupa
Nopi

OP do you actually find many places that say they can’t accommodate coeliacs? One of my oldest friends has been coeliac since she was a small child and we’ve been to plenty of places over the years without specifically calling to check beforehand and never found it to be a problem. We do avoid anywhere Italian and the choice is obviously more limited but we’ve never failed to find something she can eat.

I think you might struggle at
Six by Nico as it’s a set tasting menu.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 07/05/2022 20:24

@Moonshine5

I often think if celebs, i'e usually wealthy people go to places fhen as they have choices...the places are usually good?

Where do you suggest? Scotts?

DoThePropeller · 07/05/2022 20:27

Had a really lovely lunch at Brat in Shoreditch recently, lots of the menu naturally suitable for coeliacs (although the bread was incredible).

Maison Francois in St James’s is a current favourite of mine and Noble Rot - especially if you’re a wine fan and the latter does a good lunch menu/deal too.

walkersareback · 07/05/2022 21:59

Thank you for all of your suggestions- I will look them up.

*Generally we find that the smaller the restaurant the more likely there is to be a problem as the kitchens are likely to be smaller and therefore more chance of cross contamination.

DD's diagnosis is fairly recent so we are still finding our way. Apparently restaurants in Italy are excellent for coeliacs and so hoping a high end Italian in the uk will be the same.

Thank you for your suggestions*

Nopi and Rovi both lovely. Le gavroche used to do a good value lunch menu. Frog in Covent Garden is fun.

Verite1 · 07/05/2022 22:23

If you want Italian, Margot in Covent Garden is lovely.

Lovemylittlebear · 07/05/2022 22:27

A580Hojas · 08/05/2022 08:16

I would have thought Italian would be the last choice for a party including a coeliac.

minuette1 · 08/05/2022 08:20

Hawksmoor is great and good for gluten free - we usually go to the Covent Garden branch.

lop32 · 08/05/2022 08:35

Not Italian but I really like eating at the Wolseley, particularly upstairs on the balcony. Or Aqua Shard if you like a view (although expensive unless it's breakfast). My family love steak so we eat at the Paternoster Chop House a fair bit.

I ate at duck and waffle recently and was a bit underwhelmed. Food quite niche, thumping music and they'd wrapped the windows so you couldn't really see out unless you had a window table.

mynameiscalypso · 08/05/2022 08:44

It's staggeringly rare for a restaurant not to be able to cater to coeliacs. My dad eats out in London 4 or 5 times a week without any issues. He does generally avoid Chinese/Thai places though because of soy sauce (but the fancy ones are always able to cater).

Personally, I'd go for the Cinnamon Club.

willowstar · 08/05/2022 08:45

@rookiemere I walk past that restaurant on my commute in to work and it looks lively.and welcoming...thanks for the recommendation, I will definitely to now.

rookiemere · 08/05/2022 08:47

@willowstar yes I'd totally recommend Chamisse. My cousins DH booked it when I went down to London in November and as we were sadly just about the only customers we were treated like superstar VIPs.
Everything was so moist and my favourite was the aubergine starters - absolutely delicious trio. Very reasonably priced too. Not on commission honest, but the owner is so passionate about his food, you can't help but get that way yourself.

soupmaker · 08/05/2022 09:02

I fancy lunch at Mere.

Surprisingly high end Italians are excellent at gluten free. We went to Margot in the very small window we could eat out in December 2020 and they were excellent- they even had tasty gluten free bread

I might have to try this another time. It sounds amazing
