A thread for those who struggle in the warmer weather

Sorry if there's already a thread. I cant see one. With the weather forecasted to get warmer I thought I'd start a thread for those of us who struggle with heat. I remember from previous threads there are a few of us with illnesses such as asthma, eczema, allergies and other illnesses that get worse in summer. Also for those who live in homes that retain the heat such as town houses, flats south facing etc that want advice on how to keep their homes cooler. Or just those that really hate being hot!

It's very warm here today in the South East. It says it's 19 but when the sun came out it felt a lot warmer in my sunny front garden, and very muggy with no breeze.

We removed all our carpets downstairs and replaced with hard wood and tile last autumn so I'm hoping it makes a difference this year to the inside temps. The fans are still in the loft so far. I went shopping today and put a load of easy to cook stuff and a few iced treats in the freezer. We try not to use the oven too much in the summer as it heats up our little kitchen. We have the slow cooker, microwave and air fryer.

How is everyone else preparing?

Oh ... and there are always a few posters who say 'Stop moaning and enjoy the lovely weather!' This isn't a moaning thread. It's a thread for those who genuinely struggle in the heat and want to share advice etc.

The tip from PP about putting your feet in a basin of cold water while working is genius! I'm definitely adding that to my arsenal. Thank you!

I had to be outdoors most of the day yesterday and felt so ill towards evening, hayfever really affecting my asthma and the prickly heat started up again inside my elbows and behind knees. I didn't have my cream on me so I've scratched myself really badly 😞

I got home and had two showers and eventually it all calmed down. Feeling much better today. It's still humid but no blazing heat and thankfully I don't have to go anywhere.

I have no illnesses/conditions/issues that are made worse by the heat, and physically I suppose I cope alright with it. And yet I absolutely hate it, and feel a bit down and anxious as the heat approaches. As a PP said, it's the humidity in the UK that's awful.

It's been an awful morning, hot and sticky even early on, but it's clouded over now, in the Midlands. I used to live up north. I'd go back in a flash if it were realistic.

You know how people look for holidays with guaranteed good weather? I choose places that are as close to guaranteeing 'bad' weather as possible. 😁

I had to be outside yesterday for an event and I've got an itchy rash from the suncream. I couldn't wait to get home and shower it off. I can usually swear by Nivea but for some reason it didn't like me yesterday. That's always been an issue with my eczema, I find something that works but eventually my skin decides to be an arsehole. And my period decided to start a few days early and be an absolute bastard. The joys.

The house was so hot last night as no one was home to do the opening/closing window dance as the sun moved. I just shut all the curtains but that did nothing. Went to bed with bottles of ice and cold flannels.

Up at 6 this morning to fling all the windows open but it's still hot with barely any breeze. At least I don't have to go anywhere.

Another few days of this. Good luck everyone.

Hello - another hear struggler here.

week ahead looks very hot. Next weekend even hotter! Am dreading it ( wouldn’t be so bad if could stay in house but kids still at school and travelling to work)

Playplayaway · 12/08/2022 17:18

How are we all doing. I've really had enough now. I'm losing the battle to keep the house anywhere near bearably cool.

Yesterday the forecast said 31 today and tomorrow and 24 Sunday and Monday so there was a glimmer of hope of it cooling down. Now it says 30 Sunday and Monday. It's never ending. I feel so ill and like I can't take a deep breath.

I am staying inside at work. I walked to work this morning and I had a pool of sweat dripping from my head by the time I made it to work. It took me a while to cool down. It was awful. I consider myself lucky being female in that I am wearing light dresses now. I grew up on the tomboy side so this is a huge step for me but I don't care. I had to go out in the heat a few minutes ago and I nearly choked on the dry heat. Awful stuff. I hate it.

Bookridden · 12/08/2022 20:12

Feeling pretty low about the neverending heart tbh. Worried about water shortages. Longing for grey, cool days. I don't feel like myself in this weather.

That's exactly how I feel. Really low and just trying to get through the days until this hell is over.

@Playplayaway your best odds on suncream are going to be to stick to fragrance free physical blockers. The mineral kind that are a pain to use.

OldPot · 12/08/2022 21:43

Really despise the heat, the noise, sweaty clothes, no energy, just fucking hate it. Got to drive 100 miles tomorrow for my son's athletics match. 😵

the80sweregreat · 12/08/2022 21:52

I have struggled this summer
I loath it too hot

Tayegete · 12/08/2022 21:56

Struggling here too. We are on holiday (UK) so don’t feel like we can stay in which I would do at home. Just so hot you can’t walk around anywhere. We have got up early a couple of days and been to the beach, but even then it has been hot and crammed with people. It’s put me off holidaying in August, unless we go much further north.

Tayegete · 12/08/2022 21:57

Hate the sticky sun cream and sand combo too.

SkyLarkDescending · 12/08/2022 22:00

I'm totally with you. I'm over this heat.

I've been having a shower at tea time the last few days which seems to have helped reset my body temp a bit and I feel better in the evening. Still no chance of sleeping well in my house though, it just seems to hold on to the heat.

I've just got back from a week in France where the temps were the same as they are here now and I only once felt overheated and lethargic. I appreciate I cooled off in the pool a couple of times, but was always out of the sun from 12-4pm as I am here. There seems to be no breeze here and it's not cooling off at night.

Really struggling. I started an outdoor job that's physically demanding and it's proving to be a nightmare in this heat 😪

Some antidepressants may make heatwave challenging

I am not on antidepressants but I am struggling.

I have today of work. I stayed in all day. I am going down for my second nap of the day. The heat is just draining my energy.

The heatwave isn't too bad when you don't have to continue to work in it but during the week and life is supposed to continue on as normal, it's very hard.

😢 I am so sorry to read that.

colouringindoors · 13/08/2022 19:29

Thanks @SeaBoat so sorry to hear you're struggling too. I'm also finding it utterly draining. I've literally spent the day in bed/on sofa and still feel dreadful.

Playplayaway · 14/08/2022 21:25

How are we all doing? It's feeling a bit fresher this evening. We've got all the windows open and there's a nice breeze. Im sitting here with wet hair after my shower feeling more comfortable than im have in ages. BBC is telling me it's currently 23 dropping down to 18 at 5am then a high of 25 tomorrow.

This I can deal with. Please please please can this be the end of the nasty heat for this summer 🙏
