A thread for those who struggle in the warmer weather

Sorry if there's already a thread. I cant see one. With the weather forecasted to get warmer I thought I'd start a thread for those of us who struggle with heat. I remember from previous threads there are a few of us with illnesses such as asthma, eczema, allergies and other illnesses that get worse in summer. Also for those who live in homes that retain the heat such as town houses, flats south facing etc that want advice on how to keep their homes cooler. Or just those that really hate being hot!

It's very warm here today in the South East. It says it's 19 but when the sun came out it felt a lot warmer in my sunny front garden, and very muggy with no breeze.

We removed all our carpets downstairs and replaced with hard wood and tile last autumn so I'm hoping it makes a difference this year to the inside temps. The fans are still in the loft so far. I went shopping today and put a load of easy to cook stuff and a few iced treats in the freezer. We try not to use the oven too much in the summer as it heats up our little kitchen. We have the slow cooker, microwave and air fryer.

How is everyone else preparing?

Oh ... and there are always a few posters who say 'Stop moaning and enjoy the lovely weather!' This isn't a moaning thread. It's a thread for those who genuinely struggle in the heat and want to share advice etc.

All of us struggle, DH especially - now he's WFH, we've actually had air conditioning fitted to all the main rooms of the house (having previously had a single, portable unit). Pricey but worth it, and yes, we are in the UK

Omg luxury. I'd love this in my bedroom.

Ifailed · 05/05/2022 21:14

Really, if you can't tolerate 19 degrees why do you live in the south east?

Not just the SE, last week there was a thread from someone complaining about their house being cold with the thermostat set to 19.

orangeisthenewpuce · 05/05/2022 21:14

I'm so hot I couldn't bear wearing pj's anytime, even if they were thin cotton. I have a summer duvet and windows open on all year round but when it's hot I usually sleep under a cotton sheet. If it's really hot I wet a big t shirt in cold water and wear it to bed. Yes it makes the bed wet but it's lovely and cool.

the80sweregreat · 05/05/2022 21:15

If I won the lottery I would have air con installed everywhere indoors. To be able to sleep when it's hot would be bliss.

JustLookingAtTractors · 05/05/2022 21:32

As a bona fide fatty, I am obsessional about summer clothing. I start scouring the websites for it from early spring - linen, or linen mix trousers, loose cotton or linen tops with sleeves. My idea of actual hell is a warm day and wearing polyester. I often seen women like me dragging themselves around in cropped leggings and tight vest tops - more flesh on show does not mean you will feel more cool. I also stock up on shorts to wear under maxi-dresses, those little notebooks of blotting paper for my greasy, sweaty face and make sure the air con is fully gassed in the car (I have been known to sit in it on the drive with the engine running to get cool).

I hate being hot. Summer is not kind to fat people.

Eggshausted · 05/05/2022 21:34

Try cooling towels. You dunk them in water, then wring them out, they are like magic! They come with a waterproof case so you can carry them with you. You will see loads of people walk round disneyworld and the theme parks in the US with them. I just hang mine round my neck, or tie it around my wrist. At night I just lay it on my forehead or chest. You will be a convert, I promise.
here’s a selection: www.amazon.co.uk/cooling-towels/s?k=cooling+towels

KangarooKenny · 05/05/2022 21:35

Hot water bottle, filled with cold water is what I do.

DrEllie · 05/05/2022 21:38

Feel your pain. I'm menopausal and have rosecia. Not looking forward to hot summer days

Ha! I nominate this for earliest ever thread for moaning about the heat. Really, if you can't tolerate 19 degrees why do you live in the south east?

Yes, that is the logic by which people should operate. Never mind about your family, friends, job, the fact that feeling the heat is likely to be a life stage and you will feel the cold 20 years from now. Everyone who is warm should move to a cold place rather than seek to make adaptations to the environment they are in.

They're horrendous. When it's properly warm, they just swirl the hot air around you and make it worse.

I too am dreading it. I want to invest in a couple of portable air conditioners but reviews are always mixed

After soldiering on with fans and coolers, I finally gave in and bought a portable air con unit. Weighs a ton, ugly, a pain in the bum to get the vent pipe out of the window and of course the cost of running it but my god is it worth it. It removes all the hot air out of the room (rather than just wafting the hot air around) and replaces it with cold and it's just magical.

MrOllivander · 05/05/2022 21:55

I'm in. Allergic to heat
Actually got a dermatology consult tomorrow where hopefully I can swap my meds - I'm on injections that I can only have for 6 months, it's ended up with me having them over winter. Which seems cruel and useless torture for someone allergic to heat Grin

Well I live in the NW, but if you want to swap then have this
I had taken 6 antihistamines and dared exercise. Got hot. Yes they're as itchy as they look, and they're from the soles of my feet to my scalp, thousands of hives. I get them every time I sweat, get vaguely warm, exercise or get stressed. No cure and it's been 25 years now

We had a holiday in Italy a few years ago, avg temperatures about 32 degrees😭. But, the farmhouse we were staying in was blessedly cool - thick walls, tiled floors, and amazing windows which you could open and close to direct cool air. If Italian builders could do it in the 18th century, why can't UK builders do it in the 21st?

Zazdar · 05/05/2022 22:40

My British house like that. It’s over 300 years old though. We sleep under duvets year round.

Delatron · 05/05/2022 23:02

19 degrees is not ‘very warm’

It’s barely ‘take your jumper off’ weather.

Late 20s early 30s is ‘very warm’

Doghairismyglitter · 05/05/2022 23:09

Hallelujah, I needed this thread today!

@bookridden I could of written your post word for word!

For those that suggest closing curtains - my DC’s room has a black out blind; putting the blind down heats the room up soo much as the black seems to be like a heat magnet but leaving it up equally turns the room into a furnace as the sun beats down on that side of the house from late afternoon till bedtime. Does anyone have any suggestions?? 🤞🏼

Wet scarf around the neck really cools the blood. Dampen your hair.

Yes I was heaving pregnant in the last heatwave and that was a life saver. Or in between legs with some wet towels . Had a minging hot flat back then too 🤮

avocadotofu · 06/05/2022 05:56

I'm dreading it too, heat turn me into a zombie and I can't think straight.

BookWorm45 · 06/05/2022 06:32

Definitely found my tribe here.........
I've recently bought a fan for our bedroom, this one is extremely quiet (cost more than the last but I can sleep so much better, almost zero noise). That's been the best thing ever to help with peri / meno hot moments at night etc

gunnersgold · 06/05/2022 06:42

19 is not warm , I stilll had a jumper on !!

Are you overweight because the best way to deal with being hot is to lose it . My sister struggles but is 7 stone heavier than me which is a whole other person so no wonder she is hot !

I love summer and being free in shorts and vests ! Roll on summer !!

MeanderingGently · 06/05/2022 06:46

Absolutely nothing will part me from my portable air conditioners. As pp have said, they are heavy and awkward in a room, but I have managed to tuck mine into a corner and drape the curtain over the pipe that is permanently plumbed into the window, to slightly disguise them.

But cool air and the heat piped outside is worth it, I couldn't live every summer without these. Also, if it happens to get cooler overnight, I can open different windows and the air conditioners suck the outside cool in (no through breeze as I have a south-facing flat, windows one side only). If I can get the flat very cool overnight and then close the curtains, it heats up far less during the day while I'm at work.

It is an individual thing. 20 degrees is about the maximum I can bear. So to me, and many others, it feels very warm.
