How much do you pay for a hygienist scale and polish?

Mine want £77 for a 40 minute appointment. It's cheaper to get the dentist to do it as a level 2 treatment. I was expecting it to be around £45 but almost £80 is ridiculous.

Two hygienist appointments per year are included in the dental plan. They’re not very long and they certainly aren’t as thorough as I would hope.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 05/05/2022 21:58

I have DenPlan so mine are included in that. I get two per year as well as two regular appointments.

Surely NHS dental services have fixed prices?

Yes, but my old dentist would sneak in a small filling for the band one price. My current one doesn't.

caecilius1 · 05/05/2022 22:11

Band one doesn't cover fillings, so I'm not sure why your old NHS dentist did that.

SweetPetrichor · 05/05/2022 22:14

£50 for 30 minutes. West Scotland

kickupafuss · 05/05/2022 22:15

Our dentists don't have hygenists - they do it themselves. I had mine done today at it cost £65.

Starlitexpress · 05/05/2022 22:17

£73, but my god they're thorough and worth every penny!

Peregrina · 05/05/2022 22:29

He was bending the rules.....

hattie43 · 05/05/2022 22:29

£66

greenlynx · 05/05/2022 22:34

It sounds normal price, OP. Hygienist is private, not covered by NHS.

My previous NHS dentist would do a scale and polish as part of the basic check up. This one doesn't. And I'm not sure she's as thorough as check ups usually take less than five minutes!

Mine used to as well.

TheOGCCL · 06/05/2022 00:19

£180 for an hour, £100 for half an hour. In many cases keeping your gums healthy is harder than looking after your teeth.

RiverSkater · 06/05/2022 00:23

A scale and polish is part of the check up but my dentist won't do it. 😬

I pay £60 for half an hour, outer London but she does a very thorough job. I try to go twice a year.

pastaparadise · 06/05/2022 00:27

Just paid £43 for the dentist to do it as the hygienist was fully booked for ages. But was in and out in 10 mins so don't think they can have been very thorough looking at the times given here

HoneyFlowers · 06/05/2022 00:29

Mine was £60 then it suddenly went up to £78! 30 mins. Its a new hygienist too and she was so rough. Felt sick afterwards.

PurpleDaisies · 06/05/2022 00:32

My dentist does mine after a check up. £80 for check up, scale and polish.

HoneyFlowers · 06/05/2022 07:22

So glad to hear these prices as thought was ripped off £78! I went home and reviewed my own prices being self employed and put them up after this!

Conniebanana · 06/05/2022 07:29

Does anyone know if you can book it like you'd book a nail appointment? Like in isolation? I've got nhs dentist but they don't clean at my place.

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 06/05/2022 07:33

I pay £139 for an hour but it’s well worth it. I have advanced gum disease and it’s finally getting under control. I see the hygienist every 3 months and she’s lovely. I have dental phobia so she numbs my mouth and goes slow to make sure I’m comfortable.

Shakeitshakeitbaby · 06/05/2022 07:41

£60 30 mins

LidlCinnamonBun · 06/05/2022 07:43

Mine is £95. She told me to see her every 6 months! I can’t afford that.

ILoveYouMoreTheEnd · 06/05/2022 07:45

I'm going next Wednesday for a check up and I need a broken tooth fixed. First visit since covid that's me just managed to get an appointment. I'm not looking forward to this bill! I'm central Scotland x

inmyslippers · 06/05/2022 07:47

£75 but totally worth it. I have very bad teeth/gums. I use interdental sticks daily, brush teeth twice a day but still have tartar/plaque build up unfortunately. I have to go every 3/4months to stay on top of it

User7493268965 · 06/05/2022 07:51

I'm on a plan and pay about £250 a year for 4 20 min hygienist appointments and 2 checkups, each hygienist appointment is one side of mouth as I have numbing injections, people that only need 6 monthly hygienist appointments without numbing are on a less expensive plan.
