Should have been crimble crumble!

LabraDabraDoo · 05/05/2022 19:21

Ooh, homemade crumbles are the best. DD has loved rhubarb since babyhood. It makes my teeth squeak but I do indulge her and DH.

My favourite is apples from our tree, garden raspberries and blackberries from the track. With brown sugar, butter, flour and oat topping.

Always served with fresh cream. I will tolerate ice cream but not custard. DH pours milk over his because it’s what they did at school.

Rhubarb and raspberries is a favourite in our house. Both grown in own garden too. If I get a lot at once I stew it down and freeze some.

I once wanted to make apple and blackberry crumble, but didn’t have any blackberries - none in the shops either - so I used raspberries instead - it tasted lovely!

Chishnfips · 05/05/2022 19:53

Peach and blackberries is lovely.

Igneococcus · 05/05/2022 21:31

Not really a crumble but I loves this recipe, also works with black currants or gooseberries:

DGM made a strawberry and gooseberry crumble once, it was about 15 yrs ago and I still remember it! Absolutely amazing.

Used to make plum and cherry crumble at work in a previous job, that was gorgeous too.

Rhubarb and pear? I've never thought to try it. Can I use tinned pear?

thenightsky · 05/05/2022 22:48

This is the best every crumble according to anyone I've ever served it to. Only downside... impossible to find fresh cranberries outside of November/December in supermarkets. I've tried using frozen but they did not work.

Babdoc · 05/05/2022 22:49

If your rhubarb patch is as rampant as mine, OP, you might want to make rhubarb fool too, for a bit of variety. Delicious cooked with orange, clove, cinnamon and ginger, before combining with the custard and chilling in the fridge in sundae glasses.

tubbylittletwat · 05/05/2022 22:53

I grow rhubarb, raspberries, and cooking apples so my crumbles are mainly made with those. In winter and spring I tend to use shop bought pears, or tinned peaches as they tend to be the cheapest option.

Frozen cherries

SiobhanSharpe · 06/05/2022 00:14

Last September I made blackberry and apple, using blackberries picked from the hedgerow in Cornwall and a couple of Bramley apples. The flavour was superb.
For the crumble topping i always put whole unblanched almonds in the processor and chop until coarsely ground, before adding the flour/butter/sugar.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/05/2022 00:14

I peel and chop apples ,don't cook first, then throw in frozen blackberries and/or frozen strawberries.

10 oz plain flour, 7oz marg or butter and 6oz soft brown sugar.

NO OATS🤢

MrsPopplecat · 06/05/2022 00:23

Banana Crumble! Don't knock it til you've tried it.

onlyhereforthefood · 06/05/2022 04:07

Pear and dark chocolate crumble!

frenella · 06/05/2022 04:33

How do you make pear and chocolate crumble!!? Sounds amazing! Do you just add choc chips or melt it into a sauce first?

TheLadyDIdGood · 06/05/2022 05:08

I put Lidl extra nutty granola in the crumble topping mix.

mathanxiety · 06/05/2022 05:30

I've just bought some rhubarb and frozen strawberries with the intention of making a crumble.

I always use oats in the topping, along with very finely chopped walnuts or ground almonds, flour, butter, sugar, salt, and I make the topping at least an inch thick.

The best crumble I ever made was plum + rhubarb. I had to freeze the rhubarb until plum season, but it was well worth the wait.

Vampirethriller · 06/05/2022 05:57

Strawberry and rhubarb is lovely. I made blackberry and banana once and that was very good!

SiobhanSharpe · 06/05/2022 06:20

@MrsPopplecat Nigel Slater has a recipe for Christmas Crumble which i've made a few times as no-one is very keen in Christmas pudding in our house.
It has chopped Bramley apples, mincemeat and sliced bananas
under a nutty crumble topping and it's excellent.
The mincemeat gives it a lovely Christmassy flavour and the sliced banana is silky and strangely exotic.

WobbleTime · 06/05/2022 06:36

Love crumbles (as does my DS. Weird DD won’t eat it!)
I make :
peach and strawberry (frozen strawberries) - amazing
apple and blueberry and/or raspberry
plain apple and cinnamon (recently added some frozen sour cherries and vanilla extract to the apples) - was really good

MrsLargeEmbodied · 06/05/2022 07:07

sometimes i make apple and sultana
with cinnamon and cloves

should i buy tinned pears to go with the blackberries? or a bag of pears, and if so, do i wait for them to ripen?

OP posts:
EmmaStone · 07/05/2022 17:45

I use fresh pears, the riper the better IMO. Don't see why tinned wouldn't work though.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/05/2022 18:31

thank you @EmmaStone
i have bought a bag of pears
