I need a boys type worst witch book for my soon to be 6 year old. ( I read those as a child, not sure what age?) He likes pictures still. Really into Halloween, wizards, spells, but in reality gets scared easily.

Mr Majeika.

anewername · 03/05/2022 23:10

@CatChant oh yes I have heard of that. Is there any drawings inside or is it all just text? I maybe need to aim a bit younger.

My son loves Magic Wishing chair and The Faraway Tree. Unisex but full of wizards and magic and spells. Lots of colour pictures in modern editions. Can get them all from the library to have a try.

Agree with Mr Majeika, but maybe if he likes coloured pictures still then Winnie the Witch stories, or Meg and Mog.

Invisimamma · 03/05/2022 23:15

The worst witch.

Depends on his maturity though my ds1 started Harry potter at 6 and loved it. Ds2 is 7 and not quite there yet.

The Worst Witch

IstayedForTheFeminism · 03/05/2022 23:20

The wishing chair
The faraway tree series
Mr Pink Whistle

Actually most Enid Blyton books.

Or The worst witch.

TheSmallAssassin · 03/05/2022 23:20

Why wouldn't you give The Worst Witch a go?

Boys like books with girls in too!

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 03/05/2022 23:22

In addition to those already suggested - how about The Wizards of Once series...

Rangers Apprentice?

Talipesmum · 03/05/2022 23:42

My boys liked the worst witch - I read plenty of boys featuring boys as a child, it’s good to normalise the opposite.

Wizards of Once as suggested above would be an option, but worst witch is better really.

and obv how to train your dragon - but it’s not exactly witches and wizards.

BreezeofGreen · 04/05/2022 06:35

The Familiars - Adam Epstein
Frostheart - may be a bit old. DD was 8 I think and didn't like it but my godson who's the same age, loved it.
dragon masters series
daisy and the trouble with vampires
The secret rescuers
magical vet

InkyPinkyParlez · 04/05/2022 08:47

Oliver Moon

JurasicPerks · 04/05/2022 08:56

Again, not really witches and wizards, but Beast Quest.
I'd keep Wizard of Once for a year or 2.

Stompythedinosaur · 04/05/2022 09:19

Why wouldn't The Worst Witch be suitable for a boy? Just because the main character is female? Do you think girls don't read Harry Potter?

SomewhereEast · 04/05/2022 09:37

My boys both loved / love (youngest is still the right age) The Worst Witch books, so would give them a go!

Iknowitisheresomewhere · 04/05/2022 09:56

Another one saying my sons liked the Worst Witch.

TulipsGarden · 04/05/2022 10:16

So many books feature boys (and men) and yet girls (and women) manage to read and enjoy them. He'll be fine with the Worst Witch, and benefit from seeing a girl as the main character.

Hospedia · 04/05/2022 10:43

Isadora Moon, has magic/witches/vampires, etc but very child friendly and lots of books in the series.

Not magic but dragons? My DS very much enjoyed The Boy Who Grew Dragons. Its about a boy whose dragonfruit turns out to be a dragon egg.

The Winnie and Wilbur series, its about a witch and her familiar getting into various scrapes.

As far as I remember there aren't pictures in the worst witch books. He still likes picture books. I could be wrong ?

Winnie the Witch then. You can get picture books and chapter books with pictures.

You asked for 'a worst witch type book for boys' in your OP.

honeybushbunch · 05/05/2022 16:07

There are definitely blank and white illustrations in the Worst Witch! Agree with pp re Mr Majeika, Boy who Grew Dragons, etc.

Maflingo · 05/05/2022 16:09

Muddle Earth, or the Charlie Bone series?

MoonBat · 05/05/2022 16:32

Wouldn't recommend Charlie Bone. I've just finished reading the whole series to my DS as bedtime stories and they are a SLOG to get through!
No pictures either.

Agree with this. Enid Blyton has many magical books, and she really knew how to transport kids into her fantasy world.
