Low carb - what do you eat in an average day?

catfunk · 01/05/2022 22:19

Hello!

I'm trying to cut down on refined carbs and sugar. Having potatoes, brown rice and corn cakes a few times a week (and I know salad and veg are still
carbs) and the occasional half a pizza.

I'm also avoiding high fructose fruit such as grapes, melon as well as fruit juices and trying to pack in loads of protein. But I'm looking for more ideas so I don't get bored?

I'm Currently having lots of:
Overnight oats with yoghurt
Chicken, tuna, turkey, ham etc. salads
Eggs
Chicken sausages
Lentils, chickpeas, hummus
Occasional oat crackers
Greek yoghurt, cheese
Peanut butter
Strawberries/ raspberries/ blueberries/ Pears Dash of agave syrup in coffee

I take a hard boiled egg and a pepperami to work with me normally and sometimes a mini baby bel light.

I have a protein shake at breakfast and that fills me up.

Handful of nuts is good Aswell

Chicken cesar salad I eat at work and replace the chicken with crispy bacon at times.

I drink plenty of water during the day

For anything sweet I have an apple or grapes usually or I take a protein bar

Evenings il have piles of veg with a protein like chicken breasts that I've marinated or beef strips

Chicken sausages are awesome.

3% steak mince turned into nice meatballs in a sauce

I also make a slow cooker chilli. I don't need wraps or rice with it as there's already a lot of filling beans and veg in it.

Some nights I have a salad and add some chopped up bacon crispy, a little Stilton or croutons but not many and will have a protein bagel thin with it

I also chop up and season potatoes and put them in the air fryer. Amazing with sliced hard boiled egg and gammon cooked in the slow cooker on low all day.

Today I had Chicken, avocado and walnut salad, followed by raspberries and cream with a grating of dark chocolate. Delicious.

Thanks guys. Those meals sound delicious.

I'm struggling not to eat too many eggs as they're the only non carb ting that really fill me up at breakfast - but if I'm having a salad at lunch I usually add an egg to bulk it out !

Eggs for my first meal and meat/fish with vegetables for my other meal. I only have two meals a day

Sofasogood1 · 01/05/2022 23:24

Yogurt and berries for breakfast. Occasionally eggs.

Salads for lunch a lot - chicken, tuna, egg, steak, whatever. Leaves, tomatoes, shallots, dried fruit, seeds, cheese, lentils, pickles, ham, cured meats

Regular dinner but fewer carby things like potatoes and pasta or whatever and more veg. I have a million recipe books and use them a lot.

Looking at my food diary recently for lunches and dinners I had- (with fruit and yogurt breakfast every day)

1 salad, cod with ramen (lots of broth and veg, a spoon of noodles)
2 salad, Korean rice bowl (skip the rice, have all the veg, pickles, kimchi etc)
3- salad, sausages with creamed cabbage and carrot
4, salad, baked beans on toast with fried egg. So bread there sorry
5 salad, baked Dahl with fish
6 salad, burger!! Skip the bun
7 salad, bacon, eggs, pancakes
8 salad, their veg curry pot with steak

Ok so I have salad everyday pretty much!

Sofasogood1 · 01/05/2022 23:25

*Thai veg curry pot

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 01/05/2022 23:29

Oats aren’t low carb. Nor are pulses and hummus.

I combine (pescetarian) low carb with 16:8.

Lunch tends to be egg based. Dinner tends to be some sort of fish with (mainly green) veg. Lots of ways to jazz it all up.

Sofasogood1 · 01/05/2022 23:37

Half a peck those microwave of lentils has 17g of carbs.

Porridge 28g carbs.

Half pack basmati rice 35g.

Two slices of white bread 33g carbs.

A baked potato 40g carbs.

All around the same calories.

So yes lentils and oats are lower carb for a portion.

Sofasogood1 · 01/05/2022 23:39

And quarter tub houmus 8.9g carbs. Again similar calories.

Good luck op you're on the right track.

Get stuck into recipes and just sub stuff.

HollowTalk · 02/05/2022 07:55

A cauliflower rice stir fry is your best friend.

maryandtrees · 02/05/2022 08:05

Quite a lot of what people have posted, including yourself isn’t low carb I’m afraid. May be look at the low carb boot camp pages on here for some ideas.

Yamyam13 · 02/05/2022 08:20

I like a Mediterranean style breAkfast to mix things up which is usually along the lines of
A chopped salad (cucumber, tomato, red onion, parsley) with a halved hard boiled egg or some fried halloumi, a hand full of kalamata olives, a pickled chilli or other type of pickle etc. Sometimes with tahini dressing.

Another good option for breakfast is Shakshuka... you can make the base sauce in a big batch and simply reheat and poach your eggs in it.

I cook my usual meals just replacing things like mash with celeriac puree, rice with cauliflower rice etc.

For example
Shepherd's Pie with a celiac puree topping
Grilled spiced chicken or fish with spiced jeweleed cauliflower couscous
Courgette spaghetti with pesto and a totamo salad
Celeriac fritters

I always eat plenty of greens with everything, or a green salad

Mission Deli now do a low carb wrap, it's only 30% less carbs than a normal wrap but it's pretty good and good for the odd occasion

I also discovered a super fast & easy 'bread' you can make in 2 minutes in the microwave, if interested i can share recipe

Lots of nuts for snacks, olives, biltong

I don't eat much fruit as dont have much of a sweeer tooth, but my vice ans challenge is definitely alcohol!

Yy to the Low Carb bootcamp threads. Even if you don't join, it's a goldmine of education and recipes.

SheWoreYellow · 02/05/2022 08:23

The OP said lower carb, not low carb.

SheWoreYellow · 02/05/2022 08:23

No, I am blind. Ignore me.

shrunkenhead · 02/05/2022 08:25

How many grams of protein are you allowed a day to call it low carb?

MarshaBradyo · 02/05/2022 08:25

It depends if you’d like to do low carb or lower carb as some things are a bit too high for low carb

shrunkenhead · 02/05/2022 08:28

I guess I'm thinking about getting your body into ketosis so you know you're burning fat. And is there ANY low carb booze?? Eg vodka, gin perhaps?

chatw0o0 · 02/05/2022 08:33

For breakfast, mainly Greek Yoghurt with strawberries (or other berry fruit that may be available!). Sometimes with a small amount of slivered or crushed nuts on top. Also cooked green apples with cinnamon, to have with Gk Yog and walnuts but need a bit more time to do this. I also love overnight oats/Bircher but don't have them too frequently.

Lunches/dinners tend to be 'normal' foods but without the carb element - ie, chicken curry with red peppers, spinach, onion etc. Meatballs in sauce etc. Salmon or Lamb Kebabs with tomato/red pepper/olives etc threaded on with the meat.

Am partial to anything frittata based - ie, individual in muffin tins or a big one that can be sliced up and kept for a few days - my preferred fillings are pea, spring onion & feta or red pepper & cheddar/parmesan.

I am doing a lower carb plan but not super low.

catfunk · 02/05/2022 08:39

Sorry if I wasn't clear - just to clarify - I know what's a carb and what's not 😂 I'm trying to cut down on refined carbs, gluten, sugar. To see if it helps with some health issues. Not cutting out carbs completely, not doing keto.

So have cut out bread, cakes, pasta, etc. having occasional rice, potatoes ( maybe once per week)

Still making oats for brekkie yes I know it a carb. So more ideas appreciated. Thought the low carbers on here would have suggestions - thanks all for them so far I'm writing therm down ! And will look for the boot camp threads!

Lots of the things already mentioned but also soups and casseroles with loads of veg, stock & protein. Often batch cook the main then add different herbs, spices in plus bits of leftovers - chicken curry, moussaka, bolognaise etc.

I also only have 2 meals a day plus snacks, usually eat between 12-8

Keeping cold meats, fish, boiled eggs, seafood in fridge

Whole bags of spinach and lots of Mediterranean type veg in antipasto pots/jars for speed

Tinned fish - salmon, tuna, sardines etc.

Stir fry in stock rather than oil to save a few calories and add different flavours

Foodbanksshouldbeobsolete · 02/05/2022 08:56

Breakfast A big handful of nuts or homemade protein balls (protein powder mixed with peanut butter and sometimes extra bits like cocoa powder, chia seeds or cinnamon).

Snacks boiled eggs, veg sticks, sometimes a low carb dip, often cheese of some kind or meat snacks like peperami/jerky/salami. Just one of those. Although I have been eating more crisps recently.

Lunch Sometimes I skip lunch, otherwise a low carb wrap with sandwich meat, cheese, leftover chicken, lots of salad and mayo. Sometimes I'll just have soup if I'm not very hungry or half an avocado if I'm short on time.

Dinner Meat or fish based, with lots of veg mostly greens. This could be a chicken salad, or beef chilli, or salmon with veg. I've not been sticking to it very well recently so been having some potato or rice sometimes, and some fruit or chocolate afterwards. Normally it's sugar free jelly with Squirty cream on the occasions I have dessert, or a handful of berries or some full fat Greek yoghurt. But not every night.

I've been having more sugars recently and am feeling sluggish and looking spotty. The lower my carbs the better I feel generally

Worldgonecrazy · 02/05/2022 09:06

I do low glycaemic, OH does low carb.

we also do 16:8 on weekdays so only do breakfast at weekends, and have hot lemon during the week.

breakfast/ I have porridge, with ground nuts, honey, made with full fat milk, he has coconut flour pancakes, full fat Greek yoghurt, berries and nuts.

lunch - I have granary sourdough with feta and avocado, he has scrambled egg, feta avocado, tomatoes and nuts

snsck - half an apple with peanut butter

dinner - halloumi kebabs with salad; doodles with roast vegetables, paneer and cauliflower curry, peppers stuffed with cheese and cauliflower rice .
If you want to avoid insulin spikes, low glycaemic is a good option.

To do low low carb, the daily limit for net carbs is 60g for a man. Small portions of hoummus and lentils are ok if you keep below the limit.

catfunk · 02/05/2022 09:18

@Worldgonecrazy thank you - that all sounds good. you wouldn't have a recipe for the coconut flour pancakes would you ? I attempted them and it was a disaster ! X
