Should I ever tell my sons

That I fucking hate the Marvel movies?

I don't care about them, I don't understand them, I don't want to understand them, I never want to watch another one ever again.

But I keep watching them because I like us spending time together, even if it's watching shit tv. I like that they want to share something they love with me, I like how they get pleasure from feeling that they're teaching me about something.

This afternoon they were arguing about which order I should watch particular movies in so I can understand them better. I pictured myself saying "Actually boys, I don't like any of them. I don't care which order I watch them in. I don't want to watch another one ever again in my entire life".

They would be genuinely shocked.

I wouldn't tell them now because I would lose out on hanging out with them. But should I ever tell them? What would they say if I tell them when they're 45? Will they feel cheated out of fond childhood memories? Will they laugh at all the time I wasted? Will they love me more because I spent hours of my life sitting with them staring into space just because I love them?

Right now I am sitting beside them while they watch Dr Strange, so I am prepared for when we go to the cinema next week to see Dr Strange 2. I can hardly wait. I am sitting here without a clue what's going in in the film, fantasising about confessing my deepest darkest secret. We're going to a cinema in the next town with reclining chairs so I'll probably fall asleep within the first 10 minutes.

They're teenagers btw, I should probably just be grateful they want to be in the same room as me.

I wouldn't bother telling them. There's no need. Just as you say, enjoy the fact you still get to spent time with them.
I love the Marvel films and always take my boys (15 and 12) However my 15 year old also has a love for Japanese anime stuff and I've been to see that with him at the cinema too. I categorically do NOT enjoy it. In fact I watched 13 episodes of Demon Slayer which I needed to do like a hole in the head, because he wanted to see the film at the cinema and he wanted me to watch the series first so I knew the backstory (there are actually 26 episodes but I'm not super-mum)
I also went to see the Northman with him the other week and hated it, but he loved it. So who cares?

I found an ideal solution.. And an honest one too!! I told my ds's that imo the TRUE spiderman is Tobey Maguire... Gets me out of watching a lot of films I would rather nap through.

It's like a cult isn't it.

sure they are entertaining, and they have some real talent in too and I enjoy them.

But.... care? I literally could not care less.

Just go along with it though. They care about the order so just do as they say, honestly it's easier than trying to explain why they're meaningless crap, and they will get very angry if you try. The cult has told them that people who belittle these movies are just bitter "boomers".

I did watch one Toby McGuire Spider-Man film once in the 00s ( not by choice , but the children wanted to see it ) and I wasn't too bored by it , he was pretty good I thought
If it hadn't been in the cinema I would have switched off half way through , but when your stuck in there I didn't have much choice but to sit through it. They tend to drag on a bit I think
Too long

Don't tell them whatever you do! I have watched tons of episodes of Dr Who no idea what it's about. Also Superstore, sorry if someone likes it but I think it's crap! But they like it...... The time when they don't want to do stuff with you will end all too soon so make the most of it! (Mine are early twenties now).

I cried at the last episode of Superstore...

DorritLittle · 03/05/2022 11:59

This makes me feel better. They are sooo not my thing. I smile and nod whenever anyone talks about them. My son is not yet into them but will be...

My sons loved Superstore, but I hated it too. I'm Not keen on American humour.
They also became obsessed by ' game of thrones ' too , that looked bleak and not my thing at all ! I had to listen to ds2 moaning about the ending of that for weeks! 😂

I really enjoy the marvel films. I however cannot stand Minecraft and get so bored when we're made to talk about it/play it/watch it.

You'll have to watch 'No way home' though...

I love the Marvel films, so no need to pretend here. I'm the one introducing my seven year old into them! I did find it hard to get into some of the TV shows (apart from Wanda Vision).

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 03/05/2022 15:10

I managed to feign interest in a whole host of crap, from Fireman Sam to Marvel (OK, I do like some Marvel films).

I couldn't do it for Pokemon , so came clean about that. Turns out it makes zero difference, except that his 20 minute Pokemon monologues are now prefaced with 'I know you're not interested but...'

You've left it too late. I told DD1 when she was 6 that I hated the Rainbow Fairies and would never read another one to her. I was happy to take her to the library and she could read them herself as they fufilled a useful role but she would eventually realise there was better literature. Same with Enid Blyton, and now as a teenager with Marvel (DH watches Marvel with her and her aunty is as obsessed as DD so they bond over that). We have other things we both like and that's OK.
