Why can’t I stomach eggs sometimes? They make me throw up - anyone else?!

It’s happened a few times over the past couple of years. During lockdown made a fancy breakfast of scrambled eggs and salmon, threw up after a few bites, about a year ago had egg on toast, retched and almost threw up. Literally 15 mins ago, boyfriend makes a lovely carbonara…3 bites I pause and feel sick, throw up in the kitchen bin. I remember once as a teenager made the most lovely, buttery scrambled eggs and threw those up but assumed the eggs were bad!

A quick Google tells me you can develop a sudden intolerance to eggs. Has anyone else experienced this?

Well if it was happening as a teen it isnt sudden. Just stop eating eggs.

undermilkjug · 01/05/2022 21:14

Ive found the same thing. Most of the time I'm fine but it can hit me every now and then. I find it worse if I'm eating toast with it so have stopped that.

YukoandHiro · 01/05/2022 21:14

Sounds like egg allergy - the allergenicity changes depending on how well cooked the eggs are. So you may be fine with very well cooked eggs be react to loosely cooked egg.

Both my daughters have egg allergy. One can now tolerate it baked eg in a cake

Same. So revolting 😭

RedRum27 · 01/05/2022 21:15

@LorenzoVonMatterhorn No it happened once as a teenager that was well over 10 years ago but has happened a few times over the past couple of years

Don't know if it was you OP but some time ago there was a very similar thread on here - so surely you're not the only one!

Drbrowns · 01/05/2022 21:18

I’m similar in that they really upset my stomach and feel nauseous all day after them. Its just eggs on their own though like scrambled eggsnot everything containing eggs. But I’ve never been a big fan of them from as young as I can remember.

RedRum27 · 01/05/2022 21:18

@undermilkjug sounds similar to me…most times fine but every once in a while just feel it in my stomach. Interesting as I don’t have other allergies that I’m aware of so will keep an eye on it!

@HellyR ah ok, it wasn’t me but can imagine others have gone through the same…interesting how you can develop an allergy or intolerance to something as you get older.

Same, it’s so weird. I love eggs but occasionally they completely turn my stomach to the point I can’t even look at them. It’s been worse since I had a baby. Scrambled eggs are the worst.

Neverreturntoathread · 01/05/2022 21:25

My sister is intolerant to eggs. Reacts the same as you.

Why on earth are you continuing to eat a food you clearly can’t tolerate?

WeAllHaveWings · 01/05/2022 21:31

I can eat eggs cooked any way mostly without problems, boiled, poached, fried etc but occasionally scrambled eggs give me stomach cramps and send me running urgently to the loo within an hour of eating.

I read somewhere it is something to do with the way the yolk/white are whisked together then cooked that changes the structure of something (maybe a protien) and you can be intolerant to just that thing. I tried to google/find but I cant find anything (I maybe dreamed it!).

chipsandpeas · 01/05/2022 21:33

i had an intolerence to eggs for a while after they flared my gallbladder up - i stayed off them for a long time and eat them now and havent had any further issues

RedRum27 · 01/05/2022 21:33

@Neverreturntoathread because it doesn’t happen every single time. I have eaten eggs countless times in my life but has happened a few times over the past couple of years to make me think hmm what’s going on here. I ate eggs a few days ago and nothing. I clearly can tolerate it on most occasions just not every single one.

@WeAllHaveWings that’s interesting…I briefly read something about the proteins changing when they’re cooked so will monitor it and see!

I love eggs and used to eat them a LOT. In the past year or so they've started to make me vomit. I'm really gutted about it actually! Can tolerate them as a well cooked ingredient, eg pancake mix. Sudden intolerance to them in adults does seem to be a thing. Mine started right after my covid jag and apparently this can be linked too.

tuppencenonethericher · 01/05/2022 21:38

I've known someone who had this, and same occasional throwing up with a few other foods, that turned out to be a histamine intolerance. It can build up depending on what else you've been eating and drinking, as I understand it.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 01/05/2022 21:49

I had an issue with cheese omelettes years ago (maybe six years ago). Terrible stomach pain followed by diarrhoea. I asked Mumsnet about it, obviously, and there wasn't really a consensus. A lot of people said I needed to have it cooked through not soft, but I make my scrambled eggs runny and don't have the same effect. Other people thought it was the cheese, but I have melted cheese, eg cheese on toast, with no issues. I've had omelettes and Spanish omelettes since then and been fine, but haven't risked a cheese omelette since.

It's so long ago that I can't remember what time of year it was that I had the problem but I get very bad tree pollen hay fever with associated oral allergy syndrome. Basically at this time of year I am allergic to foods that I can have with no problems the rest of the year. For instance on Thursday my tongue swelled up in the afternoon, as far as I know my lunch didn't have any allergens that I already know about so it must have been something new, possibly pomegranate seeds in the salad. So I wonder if it the omelette thing was something to do with my hay fever.

TrillianMurphy · 01/05/2022 21:49

This happened to me. I've given up on eggs now.

RomeoMcFlourish · 01/05/2022 21:55

This happens to me! It’s been worse since I’ve had DC3 though. I can tolerate an omelette, hard boiled egg or a well cooked fried egg without any problems but scrambled eggs make me gag and sometimes vomit. It’s a shame as I used to love them! It had never occurred to me that it might be an intolerance though as I can eat eggs in other ways.

PegasusReturns · 01/05/2022 21:56

I love eggs but maybe 1/15 times I’ll get queasy. I don’t vomit but I’ll feel very nauseous and get an overwhelming craving for something sweet which seems to make me feel better.

GreenParakeets · 01/05/2022 22:03

Same here. Sometimes fine, sometimes not. Ok with egg in things but scrambled or poached eggs really get me sometimes.

I tend to find it can be if my tummy is a bit vulnerable eg post alcohol or a big meal it is then more sensitive to egg.

I just avoid eggs on their own if I can but not religiously.

naffusername · 01/05/2022 22:04

My egg allergy was slow to develop and took years to figure out.

Stop eating them. I can manage them in cakes, think it kills the proteins.

I don't need stomach pain, cramping, hives, skin flushing and the dash to the loo.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/05/2022 22:05

I love eggs. However on occasion (say 1 in 10), I get awful stomach cramps and horrendous diarrhoea about 4-8 hours after eating them.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/05/2022 22:06

I’m 57, this has only happened in the last 4 or 5 years.
