Why can’t I stomach eggs sometimes? They make me throw up - anyone else?!

It’s happened a few times over the past couple of years. During lockdown made a fancy breakfast of scrambled eggs and salmon, threw up after a few bites, about a year ago had egg on toast, retched and almost threw up. Literally 15 mins ago, boyfriend makes a lovely carbonara…3 bites I pause and feel sick, throw up in the kitchen bin. I remember once as a teenager made the most lovely, buttery scrambled eggs and threw those up but assumed the eggs were bad!

A quick Google tells me you can develop a sudden intolerance to eggs. Has anyone else experienced this?

Keep a proper food diary.

i eat eggs all the time but may be twice a year, they give me horrible trapped wind and diarrhea.

usually if i have it as an egg mayo sandwich with coffee

Eggs have always made me gag. I’m not a sicky person at all, but it’s the taste. I don’t think it’s an allergy because I’m fine with cake, it’s just the flavour of eggs.

Intolerance is an outdated term really. You're describing a non-ige allergy. Look up the egg ladder, chances are you can tolerate things lower down the ladder but struggle with things higher up or in larger quantities.

Yes, sometimes. Especially if a bit undercooked. Also, over the past few years I just cannot stomach oven chips at all. Pubs chips are fine but those at home...instant boak

I used to love eggs but now they make me feel queasy. Omelettes are the worst. Think i ate too many of them when my little one was small. Specifically cheese omlettes.

LeastofLeicester · 01/05/2022 22:13

Wow! I never knew this was a thing. I've never been keen on eggs but used to like an omelette every so often. I had HG with one pregnancy and haven't been able to even eat omelette since but I assumed it was just in my head after vomiting omelette when pregnant.

Shrimpseyelashes · 01/05/2022 22:22

@PegasusReturns I am exactly the same- I need something sweet after scrambled eggs or omelette- it’s like my body needs it to counteract the egg. So odd.

Recently I had immediate nausea and vomited after eating an omelette - it was like it hit my stomach and my body went “nope”! Interesting to hear others have experienced similar.

TokenGinger · 01/05/2022 23:55

I'm exactly the same. I absolutely love eggs but I've had a few instances over the last year or two where I've been sick quite soon after eating them and it puts me off eggs for a few months each time.

I had an issue with cheese omelettes years ago (maybe six years ago). Terrible stomach pain followed by diarrhoea. I asked Mumsnet about it, obviously, and there wasn't really a consensus. A lot of people said I needed to have it cooked through not soft, but I make my scrambled eggs runny and don't have the same effect. Other people thought it was the cheese, but I have melted cheese, eg cheese on toast, with no issues. I've had omelettes and Spanish omelettes since then and been fine, but haven't risked a cheese omelette since.

It's so long ago that I can't remember what time of year it was that I had the problem but I get very bad tree pollen hay fever with associated oral allergy syndrome. Basically at this time of year I am allergic to foods that I can have with no problems the rest of the year. For instance on Thursday my tongue swelled up in the afternoon, as far as I know my lunch didn't have any allergens that I already know about so it must have been something new, possibly pomegranate seeds in the salad. So I wonder if it the omelette thing was something to do with my hay fever.

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar Yes, this is just what I was describing with the person I know - histamine levels build up so if she has hayfever at the time, or eats other foods high in histamines, then it could have an affect that day, but not other days if this is the only thing high in histamines that she has so it stays "below threshold" so to speak.

This is interesting to me because I’ve also been having issue with eggs over the last couple years. Dippy eggs and scrambled eggs/omelette have been okay but hit and miss with fried or poached. I wasn’t sure at first due to sickness coinciding with a migraine which put me off eating eggs for about six months.

OverByYer · 02/05/2022 20:02

I get this. I eat eggs several times a week, mainly poached.
Now and again though if I have scrambled or occasionally egg mayo, its almost like as soon as the egg hits my stomach I feel like I want to throw up. Never have thrown up but it makes me feel like I need a little lie down and a sweet drink.
My friend says it's a 'broken egg' thing.
I thought was just me.

Happylittlethoughts · 02/05/2022 20:02

Ohh yes... sometimes if I think about eggs..🤢 then ok for months

BottlingBurpsForGrandma · 02/05/2022 20:08

I sometimes get a migraine after scrambled egg. Similar - perhaps 1 in 15 times. I just don't eat it now.

PaperMonster · 02/05/2022 21:17

I love eggs - but can’t stomach them in the morning.

Bloodybridget · 02/05/2022 21:26

Yes, I've thrown up after eating egg. Hardboiled ok, especially in dishes like kedgeree and salad niçoise, fine in cakes, quiche etc. Never eat soft eggs or omelette now.

AzazaelsFury · 02/05/2022 21:41

Is it only scrambles eggs?
I am the same with them. Fried is fine scrambled not every time but most times I feel like throwing up. When I was a kid I couldn't eat ceral for breakfast, same issue and we put it down to the milk. I use milk or cream in scrambled eggs and I am assuming its the same issue. I can drink a hot chocolate no problems but some things with milk make me feel sick.
As soon as I saw the title my first thought was are the scrambled.

Beebumble2 · 02/05/2022 22:21

This thread is fascinating, I thought it was just me. I also have times when I can’t face eggs, even when someone else is eating them.
I’ve also just had a thought, my adult DC was allergy tested when he was 15 and shown to be egg allergic, although showed no signs of it and ate eggs.
im now wondering if I’m slightly allergic as well.
