Find me a herbal tea I will like!

I drink too much tea. Want to cut down on the caffeine but the idea of herbal teas aren't appealing. Help me to find one I'll like please! I hate mint in drinks but other than that I don't really know where to start. I drank decaf tea when breastfeeding but herbal tea would be healthier wouldn't it?

Nettle, decaf green tea with lemon or decaf red tea with vanilla. Most taste like hot fruit juice to me - yucky.

SBAM · 30/04/2022 08:52

I like liquorice, or liquorice and peppermint. Liquorice to me doesn’t taste like the sweets, it’s a sweet and kind of grassy taste.

MangeTrout · 30/04/2022 08:54

I drink redbush/rooibos tea as normal tea gives me terrible heartburn. It's caffeine free and easily available in supermarkets.

I like the berry flavoured ones - Tesco mixed berry normally, Twinings blueberry and blackcurrant for a treat. At work they have Tetley raspberry and pomegranate which is very nice too. I like the ones that taste like hot squash.

Ginger/ginger and lemon is nice, not too sweet
Lemon verbena if you can find it
Jasmine

ChateauMargaux · 30/04/2022 09:08

Try some yogi teas in a coffee or tea shop tat sells them so you don't have to buy a whole box though often, a box is not far off the cost of cup of tea out..

Based on your post I would look at..

Rooiboos, Chai, Maca Chai and Classic

www.pukkaherbs.com/uk/en/category/organic-teas

Licorice and Cinamon, Chai and After Dinner..

MyBottleOfRibena · 30/04/2022 09:10

The fruit teas in lidl are surprisingly nice, and so much cheaper than other brands

BulbasaurusRex · 30/04/2022 09:13

I don’t like mint or teas with lemon in, but I really like:

  • clipper green tea - green tea is really really good for you
  • pukka fennel tea (think it’s called ‘feel new’ or something)
  • ginger and turmeric (gets a bit spicy if you leave the teabag in though)
  • raspberry leaf tea (seems to help with period pains - possibly a placebo effect there!)
Wimbunds · 30/04/2022 09:13

I picked ones i liked the smell of and persevered until i got used to them. I drink herbal tea all the time, but it all tastes of pond water, just familiar pond water that i can put up with! I like mint best, so can't help you there

Silverstreaks · 30/04/2022 09:14

Have a look at Yogi Tea.
They make delicious spice blends.
I love their Licorice and Chocco is amazing if you can get it.

Hebden tea lullaby dreamcatcher

The tea when ypu open it smells faintly of drumstick lollipops but it is lovely!

RoseLunarPink · 30/04/2022 09:16

My teen DS got me into herbal tea! He wanted to try it and now we have loads. Pukka is a good brand as it has zillions of flavours and you can get mixed packs which is better for trying them out. My favourites are the berry ones and the chamomile, vanilla & manuka honey. But supermarket own brand ones/other brands are often great too.

health-wise there are various ones that are supposed to have particular benefits, as well as the lack of caffeine- eg good for stress, boost immunity, help you get to sleep. I don’t know if they have been shown to work but I do like having a relax/sleep herbal tea late at night.

Rooibos, however is the devil’s poop.

BulbasaurusRex · 30/04/2022 09:17

Oh raspberry leaf tea might not be good if still breastfeeding!

MadameFantabulosa · 30/04/2022 09:19

Yogi Tea and Celestial Seasonings are both good, with a lot of choice, and mixed packs so that you can find your favourite.

I’m converted to this too- never used to like it but gave it another chance and it gives me the same refreshed/comforted feel as a proper cuppa! I like that you can have milk in it. Dragonfly do Earl grey, vanilla and honey versions too- all lovely.
Herbal tea- buy a lemon verbena plant (will be in garden centres in next month)- less than a fiver and you’ll have delicious tea til autumn. It’s really lovely- like lemon sherbet. And if you keep the plant undercover over winter it’ll survive for years.

GrumpyPanda · 30/04/2022 09:26

Lemon verbena (verveine) - don't like it in teabags but wonderful from crushed whole herbs. It's a French staple so often to be found in Provence-tyoe stores, the ones that also sell lavender soap or tablecloths.

Chamomile, again from whole flowers, totally unlike the version in teabags. Great for mixing with e.g. lemon balm.

Ginger - I simply grate some and add a bit of sugar.

Dimenw · 30/04/2022 09:27

I like real tea the best, and don't get on with decaff for some reason. So I drink rooibos (redbush) tea because I can drink it with milk like normal tea. I love rooibos with vanilla (Dragonfly or TickTock). I can just about put up with herbal tea - fruity ones like cranberry and raspberry, or lemon and ginger ( not the cheap ones though, they don't taste of anything).
It's a shame you don't like mint, because a sprig of fresh mint with boiling water poured on top is the best thing.

DeedlessIndeed · 30/04/2022 09:30

T2 do a really broad range of teas. I recommend you go into a store if you are close to one as they let you taste them before you buy which is useful.

RoseLunarPink · 30/04/2022 09:37

not the cheap ones though, they don't taste of anything

agree with this - it’s definitely a thing where it’s worth paying for the posher ones if you can - though I am going to try MyBottleOfRibena’s tip re the Lidl ones.

also re pond water - I used to think this too but I like them now. Either it’s an acquired taste or they’ve got better!

CheerioBeerio · 30/04/2022 09:43

I had to give up caffeine for health reasons, I never thought it affected me until I accidentally had a caffeinated drink and then felt quite poorly (not hyper just crap). I didn't even used to drink that much (3 or 4 cups of tea a day at most)
I also always felt that herbal teas are like old washing up water.
However, I LOVE teapigs teas. I have their happy tea, calm tea, snooze tea (surprisingly powerful) and spiced winter tea. They're properly nice with decent flavours and ingredients. I would highly recommend.

ChocBloc · 30/04/2022 09:44

Redbush with vanilla

Yup! Don’t go fruit tea or for something too delicate - chai, rooibos or I also love licorice flavoured ones.

wonkygorgeous · 30/04/2022 09:54

Not tea but a hot drink.

I use a good brand of orange squash with a fresh piece of ginger in it.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/04/2022 09:55

One of those 'Eat Well for Less' type programmes tested fruit teas and I think a fancy brand won, but Lidl was a close second at a quarter of the price, and probably beat someone like Twinings and a more expensive supermarket, so Lidl is definitely worth a try and they're only something like 50 p a box.

I like fruit teas like cranberry or lemon and ginger.

jimboandthejetset · 30/04/2022 10:31

I've never taken taken to fruity teas, but I do enjoy chamomile, liquorice, nettle, and some of the "night time" tea blends you can get.
Redbush tea is a really good alternative to black tea, though, as it goes well with milk though is also nice without.
