How much do you pay for gas and electric?

Hi all, just wondering who's gas and electric bill has gone up, and what to? Looks like ours is going up by £150 a month so will be £270 depending on meter readings 🙈 and I honestly don't know what else I can cut back. With the cost of diesel ever increasing we are now spending over £400 a month for my DH to get to work (no he can't work closer to home, it's a very specific job, and he gets a good wage, just not enough right now with all these bills going up) How are people affording this right now?! Any tips for cutting our usage? FYI we have a 3 bed detached and although I'm home most of the day I don't put heating on unless absolutely have to as have toddler at home with me, and don't have tumble dryer, but do sometimes resort to the electric airer if can't get washing dry outside. TIA

7p per kWh for gas and 27p per kWh for electricity, standing charges of roughly 7quid and 15 quid respectively.

We pay 85 quid a month by direct debit and are in credit. This is with the new prices. Previously it was 50.

Is your increase the amount you use or the amount your energy company wants to change your direct debit to?

I am pretty sure I could heat Downton Abbey for 270 a month.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/04/2022 09:49

Are you on the price cap, or have you fixed? Without that information it's impossible to say whether you're on a really expensive fix but don't use very much, or you're not quite as careful with your usage as you say.

What type of shower do you have, how much do you use it, how many washing loads do you use and do you use the quick (energy intensive) programmes. Do you cook a lot?

Small three bed house, Evolve on a non fixed tariff. Our usage is generally now £80 for electric and £70 for gas, however they tried to increase our direct debit by over £300 a month. I spoke to them, refused to pay and said the direct debit would bounce. I agreed to increase to the max we had ever spent which was £100 electric and £80 for gas.

Happydays321 · 29/04/2022 10:51

My direct debit has gone up to £136 a month gas and electric. This covers my useage at the moment. Two adults in a four bedroomed semi, washing machine, dishwasher, oven, kettle used as and when we need it. Daily showers, heating set to come on at 5pm till 10.30pm at 19, turn it on earlier if needed. Was on all day in winter if cold.

Showers kept shortish, only boil water we need in kettle. I don't turn things off standby at night. No tumble dryer, I use line and non electric airer indoors.

I'm with octopus standard tariff.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/04/2022 10:52

£570 a month now 😱

Butteryflakycrust83 · 29/04/2022 10:52

GOOD LORD!

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2022 10:54

Gone up from £95 to around £115 per month. 3 bed semi, just me and ds10 who’s here half the time.

have cut back quite a lot, heating has been off a few weeks now, house is between 16-18 degrees.

IncompleteSenten · 29/04/2022 10:55

Mines gone up by nearly £100.

I read the meters monthly, submit readings and pay.
Last month it was about 200.

We've stopped having the heating on during the day since the beginning of April and it's still just over 290.

Herja · 29/04/2022 11:06

Around £60 pm currently, duel fuel. Used to be £35/40 at this time of year. I am anticipating around £120/150pm in winter, which scares me. Can't afford it, so the house will have to go mouldy again - at least the worst room is my own bedroom.

My bill is lowish because I restrict energy use as much as is reasonably possible, rather than good rates though. It was higher, but I reduced it by washing hair less (long and thick so needs a LOT of hot water), washing fewer clothes and cooking less. Can't really think where else to cut back (obviously, at the point of reducing cleanliness to save cash, I'm doing all the usual things already).

SweetPetrichor · 29/04/2022 11:06

We paid around £120 in April. 3 bedroom terraced house split over 3 floors, 2 outbuildings with electricity. 2 adults, one working from home. It doesn't seem excessive.

Lavendersquare · 29/04/2022 11:14

Unless your home is modern and super insulated the bills are rising at a ridiculous rate.

My four bed (non modern) home was costing £200pm for gas & electric combined, now it's increased to £300 per month a 50% increase in line with the increases our government has sanctioned.

I can afford the increase but I am horrified that such a huge jump will be forced on people without the ability to increase there income to match.

As a result of NI increase and utility bills DH & I are worse off by about £180 per month, that's before you factor in food increases. That's £180 we can't spend so the economy will take a massive hit.

I'm sick of it.

AuntieMarys · 29/04/2022 11:17

7p gas
27p electric
Last 12 days used £44 worth. Standing charge about £25 a month.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 29/04/2022 11:17

I'm in Oz so have solar panels and obviously lots of sun to power them. I have a detached four bedroomed house with a pool, requiring a pool pump running three hours a day at least. We pay about 80 UK pounds a month for our gas and electric by direct debit and we are currently in credit by about 150 UK pounds. I thank my lucky stars every day for solar power!

drinkingwineoutofamug · 29/04/2022 11:20

I have meters from previous home owners and BG wanted £90 each to be swapped so kept.
I used to put £50 on each and it would last a month. Now £70 on each to last the month.
Stopped using tumble dryer, heating off, everything unplugged if not in use.
3 bed house - 3 adults all working shifts.

Alarae · 29/04/2022 11:23

I've just looked at my most recent bill and with some rough calculation, on the current price cap it would have been £170 a month.

Our direct debit is currently set to £160, so that should more than cover Winter unless the October cap increase is ridiculously high again.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/04/2022 11:26

Too fucking much- Dd used to be £90 a month- octopus propose £250 a month- I declined and agreed £150 a month Dd.
Small terraced house, two young kids (no teenage electronics)- disgusting!
also just cost me £85 to fill my car- used to be £55

ifonly4 · 29/04/2022 11:26

Our gas and electric has gone up to £116pm. Two thirds of the time it's two of us, other times three. We're in a bungalow with lounge extension and dormers in the roof. I have to say I'm so grateful it's not any more, we're watching the pennies in the hope we can still have a few treats, but there must be so many of you that have higher bills and just won't have that flexibility.

UnicornPooPoo · 29/04/2022 11:30

Currently £101 for electric, no gas here. We've just had solar panels fitted and the repayments are £265 a month so all in all, around £366. This is for a 4 bed, 2 bathroom property with 3 adults. We're currently in credit and the solar panels are going great guns so we're hoping 🤞 that the £101 bill will reduce soon. We only had the panels fitted this week so no bill review yet 😢 The repayments for solar panels are only 5 years too so not too bad.

Bunty55 · 29/04/2022 11:38

We live in a five bedroomed house. Central heating and water - are gas, and the rest is electric.
Previously we paid approx £150 a month for both.

I stopped ironing completely and we turned the heating off in March. We turn lights off when we leave the room.
Despite this we are now paying £200 per month for both. I dread to think what it would be if I were still doing the ironing and putting the heating on.
If it rained continuously I would dry towels and sheets etc inside on a drying rack and finish them off in the tumbler. Tumbler now has cobwebs on it :(

Only heat we have now is the blanket on the bed.

CamdenLurker · 29/04/2022 12:18

We live in a large house, 6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and large open plan living space, June 2021 the direct debit was £181 per month for duel fuel, in Feb it increased to £233, Aprils DD was taken yesterday I've just done a meter reading and we are £104.29 in debit, we are still on our fixed rate until 31 may.

The only option I was offered by Scottish Power to renew on a Fixed term was over £700 a month. So I'll just see what happens from here.

LeeMucklowesCurtains · 29/04/2022 12:21

It’s been £268 the last few months.

That’s despite us sitting here freezing cold. 3 bed 1930s semi.

I don’t know what to do this month, we can’t afford it. Cut back everything else already, dh and I only eat once a day.

BlitheRobin · 29/04/2022 12:21

My quarterly bill has just arrived for gas and electricity. Just over £1200! It's usually around 700- 900. That's based on an estimated reading so I shall be checking. I hope it's not correct.

BlitheRobin · 29/04/2022 12:22

Electricity is our biggest cost. I don't understand how it's so much more than the gas.

Badger1970 · 29/04/2022 12:24

Large 4 bed detached, 80s build. Triple glazing, new condenser boiler, fully loft insulated and with cavity wall insulation. Electric £250 a month. Bulk LPG tank £250 a month. We're in debit on both Hmm

The LPG was 17p a litre when we moved in........ is now 77p.
