How much do you pay for gas and electric?

Hi all, just wondering who's gas and electric bill has gone up, and what to? Looks like ours is going up by £150 a month so will be £270 depending on meter readings 🙈 and I honestly don't know what else I can cut back. With the cost of diesel ever increasing we are now spending over £400 a month for my DH to get to work (no he can't work closer to home, it's a very specific job, and he gets a good wage, just not enough right now with all these bills going up) How are people affording this right now?! Any tips for cutting our usage? FYI we have a 3 bed detached and although I'm home most of the day I don't put heating on unless absolutely have to as have toddler at home with me, and don't have tumble dryer, but do sometimes resort to the electric airer if can't get washing dry outside. TIA

£97 pm for gas and £133 for Electric. 3 bed detached, 5 people.

We're with Octopus and on a Smart Meter so I can see our exact usage for each in £ each month.

At the moment we're only actually using about £80 gas and £125 electric but the higher DD I'm assuming is to build up a buffer for winter.

My standard variable rates are
Electricity: 27.84kWh, 49.38 s/c
Gas: 7.33kWh, 27.22 s/c

Currently paying £160 per month but haven't done a reading yet since the one done at the start of April so don't know how much we've used over the month.

I have been paying £207 since last year

2 year fixed rate until end of July 23

Gas - 3.27p kWh + 26.59p standing charge
Electricity - 18.97p kWh + 27.4p standing charge

Paying £111 monthly dd for electric and £52 monthly for gas. In a good bit of credit for both but sticking with the payments to build up a cushion before the sharp rise at the end of our fix. Beyond grateful for the rates we have for this fixed period.

PinkyPie41 · 30/04/2022 21:39

£15 per week electricity, prepayment metre and we don't use it all. Gas is direct debit, paying £80 per month. Haven't had a bill yet but I doubled what we paid per month last year.

SleepingStandingUp · 30/04/2022 21:47

22.402p for electricity
18.4p per day standing charge

5.560p for gas
19.38p per day standing charge

Our usage is high so its £190 a month. We get £50 a quarter rebate

User65412 · 30/04/2022 21:53

Our fixed rate was £85 for 2 years and ended in March. This usually left us with a little credit (2 adults and baby, 4 bed house but well insulated and unused rooms are always completely off).
Our new DD this month is £260. EON next. Over 200% increase!
I can't wait to take the meter readings tomorrow to see whether I can request a DD reduction.
Can't get a smart meter either. Bloody joke!

LetitiaLeghorn · 30/04/2022 21:55

Average sized 3 bed semi. Not the best insulation. No tumble drying. £151pm. She'll energy.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 30/04/2022 22:12

Electricity 24p per day s/c, 20 p per unit
Gas 26p per day s/c, 3.85p per unit

Paying £102 per month since last October now £212 in credit over winter period so reducing monthly payments to £80.

Previous deal was paying £56 per month.

3 bed bungalow living alone.

PeepsAndSheeps · 30/04/2022 22:18

We pay were paying £92 a month for electric, recently put up to £96 by powerNI. Our rate recently rose from 18p to 21p.

It's a 5 bed house with 7 of us in it, my DH wfh and I'm at home 4 days a week too. We are about £150 in credit. Looking to get solar panels as we don't see ourselves moving from here. We have been making an effort to cut back. Never use the tumble dryer now, turn all lights off etc.

We don't get gas as we are quite rural, managed to fill the oil tank just before prices went crazy. Have had heating on as little as possible, but hard at times with young kids in the house and DH WFH. Really want to make the oil last as long as we can.

Thank you for all your replies. I am waiting on a new bill having submitted meter readings, but am currently on a fixed rate which ends on 28th May....after that who knows! I wonder if there is some kind of national divide...does the price of fuel differ from post code to post code? Some seem to be using much more than us or have a bigger property and paying less, and other seem to be paying silly amounts. We have a relatively modern house and do have solar panels but they only heat water, and don't supply any other energy. What is the world coming to...I feel for our kids, they'll never afford to move out at this rate!

" After that, who knows?"

Just work it out using the amounts you used last year, your standing charges and the prices per kWh.

We used 64 quid of gas and electricity in April, over a third of that was standing charges, last month at the new prices. Only 7quid of that was gas usage.

Pyewhacket · 01/05/2022 18:57

£280 per month

dementedpixie · 01/05/2022 19:00

From some of the rates quoted some people are still on a cheap fixed rate. Once that ends they will be paying higher prices.

I'm on the standard variable rate and submitted readings today as its been a month since the last reading and since the price cap increase. We have used £140 of electricity and £85 gas since 1st April.

Abraxan · 01/05/2022 19:04

£359 a month, up from about £190 iirr.
4 bed, 3 storey new build (new ish) townhouse.

But we have two electric cars, which affects this.
I still think it's too high but will monitor it this year.

Abraxan · 01/05/2022 19:06

We have recently replaced the boiler which should help.
And later this year we are having new windows - first date to get them! We know we are losing heat in the living room as two of the windows now have gaps. New windows should help a lot.
