DS PASSED HIS DRIVING TEST - NO CAR OF HIS OWN BUT CAN I INSURE HIM ON OURS?

Yankydoodledandy · 26/04/2022 15:35

DS has passed his test but hasnt got a car but we are happy for him to use his Dads.

So the question is is insurance - can we put him as a second named person?

YES BUT IT MAY BE VERY EXPENSIVE. I HOPE THAT HELPS

Redglitter · 26/04/2022 15:36

Short answer - yes

Just phone your ins company they'll put him on right away although it'll probably cost you

chisanunian · 26/04/2022 15:37

I expect so. Why not phone a local insurance broker and ask their advice. That's what we did, and they found the best policy for our dc.

fairlygoodmother · 26/04/2022 15:37

Yes. As he's young and inexperienced, the increase in premium will be substantial.

Yankydoodledandy · 26/04/2022 15:37

oppps sorry caps lock was on!

AccommodatingAlice · 26/04/2022 15:37

Yes you can.
DH has me and DS as named drivers on his car insurance and my car insurance has DH has named driver.

ENoeuf · 26/04/2022 15:39

Op, are you Felicity replying to yourself? You are both pink and they had caps but you didn’t! This is a very confusing thread only five posts in.

IsThisNameTaken · 26/04/2022 15:39

Yes, he can be a named driver on another policy ... be prepared for a massive price hike though if it's a decent car! Was cheaper for us to buy DD a tiny runaround and have her own insurance than put her on my car

Regenbogen22 · 26/04/2022 15:44

Just call your insurer?

I think OP was apologising for caps in the title, not the reply.

Yankydoodledandy · 26/04/2022 15:48

Current insurer won't add him and suggested I went on the comparison sites to see who would!!!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/04/2022 15:48

You can name anyone... FIL is on our car insurance for example (ours is a 7 seater so better for taking the grandkids out!)

crackingreward · 26/04/2022 15:48

You will have to ask your insurer. Not all companies will cover. Someone just the other day said their insurer wouldn't let them add their DC.

SVRT19674 · 26/04/2022 15:50

My insurance doesn´t insure anyone under 25 or alternatively with less than 2 years driving licence.

Yankydoodledandy · 26/04/2022 15:51

The current insurer won't add him (the underwriter) has suggested I go on the comparison sites and see who will

OP posts:
HirplesWithHaggis · 26/04/2022 15:51

If it's a posh, expensive car, they might not cover under 25.

Yankydoodledandy · 26/04/2022 15:52

It;s not - it's a 2010 Astra!

If you have to cancel your insurance cause they can not provide the cover for your son and need to go elsewhere make sure they do not charge you a cancellation fee as it's not your fault they can't provide the cover

Yankydoodledandy · 26/04/2022 15:54

why would we cancel the insurance? Will just search for a company who will

They can provide the cover that was arranged though. You don't get out of cancellation fees because your needs have changed!

saltnvinegarlover · 26/04/2022 15:59

Hmm i used to work for car insurance and we wouldn't charge for cancelling when we couldn't provide cover as it meet your needs at the time but circumstances change

saltnvinegarlover · 26/04/2022 16:03

If you take out another policy with another insurance company to include your son as a named driver then you would need to cancel your existing cover for your car

Yankydoodledandy · 26/04/2022 16:14

UPDATE
Just got a few quotes:

With DS as a named driver to DH policy with a black box £800
Without blackbox cheapest is £1,400
Fully comprehensive

DH only pays £300 fully comp on the car so £1,100 in theory to add DS on
Probably cheaper or the same price for him to have a run around car and insurance of his own

OP posts:
crackingreward · 26/04/2022 16:58

It's never going to be cheaper to run another car, that's a huge expense.

DD first insurance was with direct line for £1200.

SadLittleLife · 26/04/2022 17:03

Try Marmalade @Yankydoodledandy .
DS 17 has his own stand alone policy and can earn NCD.
You need to have own cover on car, he can't have more than 50% use, has a black box and buys miles as needed.
Doesn't affect your own policy.
This was cheaper for us than adding him to my policy and he won't affect my No Claims.
Alternatively try Veygo for temp cover if he's just going to drive occasionally. Pay as he uses it.
