DS has passed his test but hasnt got a car but we are happy for him to use his Dads.

So the question is is insurance - can we put him as a second named person?

I don't know how old you son is, but when my daughter passed her test it was a few weeks before her 18th birthday and I found that insurance went down significantly when she turned 18, so we just waited for a while and added her from the day she turned 18.

thanks yes saw Marmalade - how much are black boxes?

You don't need to pay for the black box @Yankydoodledandy.
We were able to self install (really easy just pair with bluetooth on phone) but some need to be installed by the insurer.
Very good idea though as they're measured on speed, braking, cornering and any phone use.
With Marmalade if you drive well, your next purchase of miles is cheaper.
DS very proud of his current 99% score and hope it installs good habits in him.

No way will you be able to buy a car and insure him as the main driver for less than £1100!

Insurance is mega expensive for newly licenced teens. Gets better though each year - just have to grit your teeth for the first few years.

If he's only going to drive the car occasionally then you/he can look at insuring as and when each time he drives or for a few days/weeks at a time via Veygo (part of the Admiral group), Collingwood or Marmalade.

Don't know about the 2nd two, but I know that Veygo even allows you to build a No-Claims discount while doing that.
