Supermarket delivery recommendations - cost of friggin living

MarmaRell78 · 26/04/2022 14:31

I can get all the major supermarkets to deliver, but Aldi and Lidl are a 25 minute drive away, so not all that practical. Delivery pass is coming to an end with sainsburys and I think prices are going up... Who would you recommend for quality vs cost? Can't believe how much things are already going up by. How are Morrison's for quality? I assume they're cheaper?

I've always had decent stuff from asda, which I find is cheaper than most supermarkets (although more expensive than aldi/lidl)
They do a midweek delivery pass which is very cheap, if you can accept deliveries Tuesday to Thursday.

MarmaRell78 · 26/04/2022 14:43

Currently using a midweek pass as I'm flexible with work hours. Will double check on Asda as an option.
Do you think Asda is alright quality?

OP, why do you say a 25 min drive isn’t practical for a delivery? My nearest Waitrose is 50 miles away, (Scotland) and they happily drive the 100 mile round trip to deliver to my house for their standard charge. Supermarkets use refrigerated vans, so your food will be fine however long the journey.

I use asda or Morrison's.
Don't have a pass so can't comment on them but always had good quality of food from them.
I think I do prefer Morrison's meat

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 26/04/2022 14:53

For the price difference, I'd drive to the Aldi

MarmaRell78 · 26/04/2022 14:54

@Babdoc I didn't think Aldi and Lidl delivered? They're the ones that are a 25 min drive away, so even tho I know there probably the cheapest supermarkets I don't want to drive that far. Can't take shopping being over an hour with toddler in tow 🤣

Aldi and Lidl don't do home delivery yet.

MarmaRell78 · 26/04/2022 14:55

@OnlyFoolsnMothers is the price difference that much?! An hours driving there and back

sometimes with traffic my aldi can be 25/30mins away in London- we save prob £30-40 a wk compared to our old sainsburys shop, I think it's worth it.

boonducks · 26/04/2022 14:57

Everywhere is a minimum 25 minute drive for me.
Tesco delivery all the way for me, paid for in clubcard points. Plus occasional trip to Aldi or lidl.

Beachsidesunset · 26/04/2022 14:59

Amazon Fresh do same/next day Morrisons deliveries free over £40 with Prime, almost never substitutions and in brown paper bags. Top service.

nearlyspringyay · 26/04/2022 14:59

Aldi and Lidl don't deliver yet. I think it depends where you are tbh as to the quality v cost. Sainsburys is best for us as we actually get what we order most of the time. Tesco and Asda have been terrible. I like Morrisons and Asda if I can go to the store but to far to make it worth it.

Our average shop has gone up significantly circa £90 to now £120 but when I have been in to Lidl / Aldi I've never found it significantly cheaper to make it worth driving there. Plus I always end up going somewhere else to finish the shop.

I always have to go to another shop after Aldi to complete my shop if I go 🙈

same but its every other week and prob only £10-20 quid max on additional things.

MrOllivander · 26/04/2022 15:09

Tesco price matches on Aldi on a fair few things
I was using sainsburys but ridiculous amounts of subs

FrenchBoule · 26/04/2022 15:11

Do you need delivery pass? Will you use it enough to pay for itself?
Look up the supermarkets in your area re product availability and delivery cost.
Check the prices of products you’re using, who has them cheapest.

Yeah I just meant to might aswell do the full shop elsewhere where I can get everything at once

Well it's relative isn't it- a £40-£60 saving a month is important for me and well worth the trip.

gogohm · 26/04/2022 15:26

I prefer Morrisons of those which deliver but it's worth you driving to aldi or lidl monthly for long life products

codeVeronica · 26/04/2022 15:29

Iceland delivery is free for orders over £35 IIRC and there prices can be quite cheap, even if they don't always have a massive selection for the nom-frozen stuff.

KatherineofGaunt · 26/04/2022 15:33

I have a Morrisons Tues-Thurs delivery pass but to be honest I've been driving the 20-25 mins to Lidl lately. I filled my trolley so much today and it was £60 including a new bin. A similar shop at Morrisons would have been at least £80. I'm going to cancel my Morrisons delivery and head to Lidl instead.

MaggieFS · 26/04/2022 15:36

Morrisons is expensive except when things are on offer.

PortiaFimbriata · 26/04/2022 15:41

Like a pp if I were you I'd drive to Aldi/Lidl monthly to stock up on toiletries/cleaning products/freezer food/tins/childrens party food etc and obviously get fresh food for that week as well while you're there.

The difficult bit is to steer clear of the chocolate/biscuits/beer/wine while you're there unless it's definitely in your budget and you can resist it.

Babdoc · 26/04/2022 16:22

That’s strange, OP - I’ve seen Aldi vans out delivering here in Scotland, and their website says there is no minimum order for delivery. Are you in a part of the UK they don’t cover?

TheChurchOfEli · 26/04/2022 16:30

Iceland prices aren’t that cheap anymore.

I would go Asda. The smart price range is expanding and good quality for money. I had some vouchers for Asda (we usually go aldi or Lidl) and managed to get a pretty huge stock up shop for £70 which means we will only need to do small tops of fresh stuff for the next few weeks. I was surprised at some of the stuff included the smart price range.
