Supermarket delivery recommendations - cost of friggin living

MarmaRell78 · 26/04/2022 14:31

I can get all the major supermarkets to deliver, but Aldi and Lidl are a 25 minute drive away, so not all that practical. Delivery pass is coming to an end with sainsburys and I think prices are going up... Who would you recommend for quality vs cost? Can't believe how much things are already going up by. How are Morrison's for quality? I assume they're cheaper?

That’s strange, OP - I’ve seen Aldi vans out delivering here in Scotland, and their website says there is no minimum order for delivery. Are you in a part of the UK they don’t cover?

Also deliver some things from the middle aisle like furniture, toys etc, I think even wine randomly but they don’t deliver groceries.

Are you sure? Do you have a link? They deliver special buys and alcohol but not groceries and they use couriers, not their own vans. There was a trial with Deliveroo during lockdown but it ended a few months ago. I am jealous if you can get deliveries in Scotland!

Aldi do do click and collect in some stores, OP. That would save you traipsing round a store with a toddler.

Aldi do click and collect. I’ve found it to be really good.

I would do a monthly drive to aldi/lidl for non perishable goods and then get a weekly tesco or asda delivery for fresh food. I find the fruit/veg in tesco similar in price to lidl and better quality.

Being vegeterian our spend has gone down a lot as Asda are doing a lot of vegetables for only 20p a bag now....

Lightning020 · 26/04/2022 18:34

Very happy with our weekly Asda delivery pass. I moved it from Friday to Sunday from now on and we now have a lovely female delivery driver too!

Thank you everyone this is really helpful. We actually have Prime, so I wonder if using Morrison's is a good way of doing it.
I didn't know you could Click and collect at Aldi, definitely worth knowing. Altho trouble with driving there is I lose my naptimes as toddler definitely sleep in the car and not again 😬🤣
But generally sounds like they're all much of a muchness. I'm getting better at meal planning and we're basically veggie anyway

We use Asda because they’re better on price than Sainsbury's and Tesco. I haven’t had many substitutes really and they’re usually not too bad. I find the quality fine. I don’t like how Morrisons deliver. They chuck it all in bags very randomly and items always end up damaged/broken. Plus you have the hassle of saving the bags then remembering to hand them back the following week. All of this was a while ago now though so they might have gone bagless, but I’d had so many items damaged and spills etc that it’s put me off using them ever again.

ChocolateRiver · 26/04/2022 21:27

Be careful with Aldi cluck and collect. A worker in my local Aldi said a lot of the items were priced higher for click and collect compared to getting off the shelf yourself.

Gilead · 27/04/2022 04:17

@ChocolateRiver , I do price comparisons because I use the click and collect website as a shopping list when I do go in store, I haven’t seen differences. I find click and collect really good, substitutes are excellent, although rare. I like that if they haven’t got something in stock they will give you the larger size but only charge the original price. eg.. I needed 500g of mince x2. I got 750g x2 but at the 500g price, thus giving me 500g of free mince.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/04/2022 06:31

i used asda because tesco had let me down in the past
morrisons has some things that are more expensive

IstayedForTheFeminism · 27/04/2022 06:42

I think "which supermarket is best" depends on where you live.

Morrisons used to be brilliant. Then they switched to local store delivery, not the warehouse delivery they used to do and it was awful. So many things weren't even on the website, even though they sell them in store and everything was always out of stock.

Asda is really hit and miss with availability.

Sainsburys are usually fine and actually not really any more expensive.

Iceland are usually fine but I can't buy everything we need there.

I've got an Iceland shop coming today to fill up the freezer. And a sainsburys shop coming at the weekend for Everything else. I might do an asda shop in a few weeks if we need one.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 27/04/2022 06:47

I world love to use Morrisons but they tend to give such short dated fruit and veg that we were just wasting too much food. They do flag up when you shop the guaranteed life of products and for much of it's 2 days, even if you get an evening delivery.

Meant we were losing too much.

Asda here is awful but our local store is so no surprise.

Best we've found is Aldi Click and Collect, but they've just stopped doing it locally

BlackeyedSusan · 27/04/2022 09:49

Morrisons are reliable. Prices have increased a lot though. Asda have a poor reputation for delivery and click and collect is often out of stock or doesn't turn up.
