Teen - what to wear to nice restaurant

My DD aged 15 is very much a trainers and hoodie sort of girl but we've got a family dinner at a really nice restaurant which although hasn't officially got a dress code is pretty smart. She's really happy to wear something other than her usual hoodie etc but we've not been able to find anything. I don't want her to feel uncomfortable so could also be trousers and top rather than a dress (she's quite open to a dress if she could find one!) Also she'd hate to turn up and feel overdressed!

She really likes Urban Outfitters, Brandy Melville, vintage 90s, Stradivarius and things of that ilk.

Any suggestions (especially from cool teens 😉) would be great. Thank you.

How about black leggings, nice T shirt, blazer and trainers.

Musicalmaestro · 24/04/2022 07:01

Trousers and top would be fine.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 24/04/2022 07:14

Jumpsuit?

I saw a picture of my cousins 17yo DD wearing silky cargo pants and a fitted top and she looked smart and fresh. Maybe something like that would work?

BeerLoas · 24/04/2022 07:20

Tea dress or jumpsuit and fashion trainers

Black skinnies and a top with loafer flats

T-shirt (could be black with) some design on it like a star and pair with nice necklace

newlabelwriter · 24/04/2022 07:20

Yes, that sort of thing sounds good. Although where to find it?

Need approx age, size and budget

ApolloandDaphne · 24/04/2022 07:21

Thai sort of look?

This not Thai!

FleeceNavidadfromtheSheep · 24/04/2022 07:24

Does she prefer short/long, form fitting?
DD wears a lot of coloured, flared jeans, with cute crop tops, Zara and HM have a good selection. But silky cargoes are a good shout. With clean trainers.

newlabelwriter · 24/04/2022 07:24

she's 5' 7 / slim & budget up to about £100. She's 15

Love those trousers

She currently loves cargoes and when we've looked at dresses it tends to be more strappy, short type of thing (although she never wears anything like this so she's a bit worried that she'll feel exposed!)

I also like things from Hush or get ideas there and find cheaper 🙂

Innocenta · 24/04/2022 07:27

Most UO dresses at the moment are slip dresses or a bit cottagecore influenced. Sounds like she might feel a bit uncomfortable in a slip dress? I'd probably go for separates if I were you.

Consider the Ciara skirt from Brandy with a non cropped, fitted cardigan (little tank under) and necklace of her choice. That's very 90s and cardigans are quite current.

Loopytiles · 24/04/2022 07:28

If you know the retailers she likes just pick something from one of those!

They all sell separates, dresses etc.

girlmom21 · 24/04/2022 07:31

Look at Miss Selfridge. They do lovely dresses for teenage girls

newlabelwriter · 24/04/2022 07:41

Thank you - some of these are great and I'd totally forgotten about Miss Selfridge. I'll have a look

Asos. Lots of things in the sale at the moment so plenty of good bargains.

My DD is 14 and similarly doesn't wear skirts and dresses (other than school uniform). We had a family wedding in December and she wore black velvet trousers (M&S) and a dark green blouse with frills from H&M. We actually bought another silky blouse/shirt from H&M at the same time with a patchwork design, but she went with the green one on the day. Trousers were about £35 and the tops £25. We got a black drapy jacket too as it was December, also H&M I think.

She looked great and felt really comfortable with the outfit. In fact at one point she surprised me by saying she might be up for stepping in as an emergency bridesmaid (one of the bridal party caught COVID a couple of days before) and wearing the dress, but as long as she could change after ceremony/photos as she really wanted to wear her outfit because she liked it so much!

newlabelwriter · 24/04/2022 08:40

Amazing, thank you. H&M is a great shout and I’ve also just thought about Monki.

My 14 and 16 year old have recently bought dresses (square necked, ruched type things) from Hollister - not a shop they usually frequent but they were lovely on them. H&M black jumpsuits were a staple before.
