When you hear the word Colin...

Does it mean anything other than a name?
DH has asked. He had a friend years ago who used it to mean an erection. I have never heard this.
Was it just his friend's made up 'thing' or was it actually a use of the name?
DH is not called Colin and they didn't know a Colin.

Caterpillar birthday cake

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 23/04/2022 09:43

I expect it's rhyming slang if it's from London. Not sure what though and not sure I want to Google it.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 23/04/2022 09:50

According to the glossary at the end of this colin does mean erection and it's from polari.

Was this mate gay?

Chocolate caterpillar cake

ilovemyelectriccar · 23/04/2022 10:10

Various friends, colleagues and relatives but I'm a child of the 60's and didn't see it at all in the students I taught recently so a generational thing. As a name it's not popular any more.

ZarquonsSandals · 23/04/2022 10:12

When I hear the name Colin, I always think of Tim & Daisy's dog in Spaced.

liveforsummer · 23/04/2022 10:12

Caterpillar for me. Never heard of the erection association and isn't mentioned in Austin powers when they see the penis like object on the radar and go through every possible word to cover it 😆

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 23/04/2022 11:55

Aha Jules that makes sense.

Cake. Hungry now.

Snozzlemaid · 23/04/2022 12:03

My dd calls her Renault Clio Colin

ComDummings · 23/04/2022 12:05

Another vote for the caterpillar cake. Now I want one!

God, all I think about is this absolute dickhead who used to be involved in my hobby, who somehow became chairman and - once in power - turned into a mini Hitler (no exaggeration - 'my way or the highway' and not letting certain people/groups of people be involved, for no other reason that prejudice).

Admittedly this is a very niche answer, but whenever I hear the name it makes me fume inside at what he did to our group before we finally got rid of him.

heartofgrass · 23/04/2022 12:24

The more I see the name written down the more I am growing to like it.

I might spearhead a revival!

Aha Jules that makes sense.

Can I get a gold star and a 10/10? I feel like the only member of the class who has actually answered the question. The others are all waffling on about cake, Miss.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 23/04/2022 12:36

Just a name to me

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 23/04/2022 12:42

Star for you Jules, 10/10 and a house point :)
DH is very pleased too.

My FIL. And the caterpillar.

Deathraystare · 23/04/2022 13:43

When I hear it I either think of my lovely cousin or the energy draining vampire on tv!

MajorClang · 23/04/2022 13:50

Tick and a path in the woods we walk in, as a direct result.

Not sure why exactly but DH's nan used to call ticks 'colins' so we do too now. We ended up naming all the paths/truck roads in the [large, working] woods we walked in almost daily during lockdown and one of them became Colin (as it becomes very grassy at the end and an obvious place where ticks will be hanging out).

MajorClang · 23/04/2022 13:51

Oh and to answer the question - no never heard of a Colin being an erection.
