Do you have a favourite stretch of coastline in the UK ?

By UK, I mean Scotland and its islands, Northern Ireland, England, Isle of Man, Wales and the Channel Islands. I'm not well-travelled and have only seen parts of the Yorkshire coast, parts of Dorset and a little of Devon. So I'm really seeking opinions on what's nice and perhaps not so nice around our islands.

All of it!
It's all got character. And I'm probably in the minority to be disappointed that Blackhall Beach won't be as gritty/grimy as it was for Get Carter these days. There's a different but equally valid beauty in the grit compared to the windswept beauty by Bamburgh.

I like sandy beaches with dramatic cliffs and so love North Cornish beaches.

Arisaig in the Scottish Highlands was also spectacular, white sand and turquoise water (bloody cold though)

Biased, but Jersey is alright on a good day Smile

The Causeway Coast/Antrim coast road is stunning. It has dramatic cliffs, huge sandy beaches, clean, clear water with some amazing surfing, secluded bays, the Giant's Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, ruined castles and a plethora of villages and towns with fabulous shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs (and more ice cream than you can shake a stick at).

Probably the Gower peninsula, Worms Head and Three Cliffs Bay being my favourite views of many beautiful beaches there. The Mumbles feels Mediterranean in the summer too.

tkwal · 23/04/2022 01:04

The Antrim coast right across Donegal. Stunning

MotherOfMonkeys0 · 23/04/2022 01:11

Lunan Bay in Angus. Huge, quiet and stunning, sweeping golden dunes.

The East Neuk

Devpatelslaughingeyes · 23/04/2022 01:34

Mersea Island, East coast of Essex. quiet, peaceful, and absolutely idyllic. No, you don’t want to go there.Definitely not.

Twocrabs20 · 23/04/2022 01:39

Another vote for the Pembrokeshire coast. Lynton, Lynmouth and Porlock are especially beautiful.

User48751490 · 23/04/2022 07:27

Tentsmuir beach also stunning.

MangoLipstick · 23/04/2022 07:38

Northumberland for sure.
The beaches I’ve been to are pretty much always quiet, lovely and peaceful. They seem to stretch for miles and miles.

Some of the beaches in Scotland are unreal - if it wasn’t for the chill in the air, I would of thought I was abroad somewhere!

Cornwall has some lovely rugged areas of coastline that are great for coastal walks.
I also like Cardigan Bay, perranporth and Bude for the beaches - when they are not super busy.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 23/04/2022 07:49

Harris/Lewis and Shetland - really found places like Luskentyre to be stunning and so peaceful. Nobody has said NW England yet; is this because of Blackpool? 😄

Useyourfork · 23/04/2022 07:49

There’s a beach in Pembrokeshire that you can only access when the tide is out. It has golden sands and caves in the cliffs that have shallow pools but deep enough to swim in. The water is warmer than other parts of the UK due to the Gulf Stream. I would love to go back there I think it’s near Lidstep Haven.

Loved the beach Wells -next-the-sea as a child due to it being off a pine woodland and there’s the train that takes you there from the town. We went back there the other year but it had become rather busy and dirty 😕

BobbinThreadbare123 · 23/04/2022 07:49

Argh it chopped half my post off.
The Solway Coast in Cumbria is really beautiful; that's the bit of the NW I'd recommend.

hellcatspanglelalala · 23/04/2022 08:04

I have several...
Pembrokeshire in Wales
Northumberland around Bamburgh/Beadnell
North Devon (Croyde/Woolacombe)
Suffolk (Aldeburgh)
Cornwall (most of it but particularly like down the bottom as it's quieter, St Just area)
South Devon around Bigbury Bay

Deathraystare · 23/04/2022 14:16

Anywhere sandy! Hate Brighton.

Smokeybacon72 · 23/04/2022 14:30

Kintyre especially at Southend and Machrihanish

MakingCurrantBunsForTeaaaa · 23/04/2022 15:14

Love the variation of the British coastline, but top three, for me;
North Cornwall, for scenery and beaches nothing beats it.
Jurassic, interesting and stunning.
And Northumberland and the North East coast.

Deathraystare · 23/04/2022 15:41

Not the best beach by any stretch of the imagination but I think it was sandy not shingly (really cannot remember) but have fond memories of the beach at Shoeburyness of all places. I used to skive off college and get the bus down there. The last stop was the beach!

Half off it was taken up by the military so was fenced off, so really cannot recommend it, so I don't want a lynch mob of Mumsnetters after me, ok??!!

willowstar · 23/04/2022 15:52

North Norfolk, partly for the variety. I love walking from sheringham, which is part pebbly, leading to sandy, down to weybourne, which is all pebbles. Lots of that coast has beautiful beaches with dunes. I love it up there.

Also St. Cyrus beach near Montrose.

Subbaxeo · 23/04/2022 16:10

Anglesey!

londonmummy1966 · 23/04/2022 16:20

Probably biased as Gower was my childhood home but it is the most beautiful place with a wide range of different beaches. Other than that
Pembrokeshire coastal path, especially Manorbier to Swan Lake,
Bamburgh Sands in Northumberland - the castle end rather than Seahouses
North Cornwall - the stretch between Padstow and Newquay is lovely.

yellowsuninthesky · 23/04/2022 17:23

I agree there is so much to choose from. I am not a beach person so ability to soak up the rays or go in the sea isn't important to me. The Antrim coast is beautiful. There are lovely beaches in Northumberland. St Brelades in Jersey is a lovely beach if you want the more traditional beach pleasures. And the west coast of Scotland with all the sea lochs is lovely.
