i must agree, it is very tempting to get rid of netflix, currently not finding much to enjoy on there

Wish they'd raised the threshold at the same time as the percentage rise. I will be better off in July (in terms of income, not the cost of living!).

joanneligthelm · 22/04/2022 07:43

No this July, the government have increased the threshold before you pay national insurance so those on lower incomes will be better off than they were before the national insurance rise for example those on 20,000
Before increase would pay around £104.32 a month, now would pay £111.74 but in July will pay £79.04
So though annoying it doesn't kick in until July . Putting nearly £25 back in your pocket compared to pre increase

BlueSpottedGiraffe · 22/04/2022 07:47

Yes you are right OP, from July you will see more money in your pocket again as NI will decrease. I've just received my payslip for next week and I don't earn much so I'm only paying an extra £8.46 in NI but I feel for those who earn more than me and will be losing a lot.

BlueSpottedGiraffe · 22/04/2022 07:49

For anyone thinking of getting rid of Netflix I saw a post on here earlier in the week about paying for Disney + with Tesco points, I've never considered getting Disney+ as no kids in the house but had a look and there is a lot to watch on there so we have cancelled Netflix and will be getting 6 months of Disney+ with our Clubcard points. Worth thinking about if you have enough points.

@superplumb did the public sector not get pay rises this year and last year, even though only small ones? Often I’ve seen public servants grumbling about small pay rises over the last couple of years. Over in my line of work I’m currently on 7.5% less than I was in 2019, (up from the 25% cut I was living with last year) despite working as a critical worker in the private sector throughout the pandemic. I frequently worked in much more arduous and potentially perilous situations than I ever have in my life, for considerably less.

Even a small pay rise is better than a pay cut - it is slightly disingenuous to suggest you don’t get one at all.

bigbluebus · 22/04/2022 08:06

DH got paid today. He's had slightly more than usual. He has had a 5% pay rise effective from this month.

DressingGownofDoom · 22/04/2022 08:13

I got a 5% pay increase but somehow have less money this month than last month Confused

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 22/04/2022 08:16

Well I'm disappointed that I got no pay today Grin

It's not like we all get paid on the same day you know

According to Martin Lewis the cut off for benefiting from the July change is around £40k I think but no one size fits all

SpinningForVictory · 22/04/2022 08:17

My adult DS gets paid weekly and was very disappointed and pissed off last night. He works hard for peanuts, like tonnes of people on here. It’s all too fucking much.

It would be different if the money were actually going to boost our quality of life but knowing it's going straight into the pockets of loaded Tories and their millionaire mates Sad

Much of the public sector has been subject to the government’s austerity measures since 2010. Most years, no pay rise at all. In real terms, a significant cut in pay

Cstring · 22/04/2022 08:24

Why is there the 2 months delay between the NI rises and the thresholds changing?
Things are bad all round currently, with the price of fuel not coming down and energy prices.

BurscoughBooths · 22/04/2022 08:27

I’ve just checked. My pay has gone up 5% since 2011. Inflation since 2011 is a cumulative 29.86%.

BeyondMyWits · 22/04/2022 08:27

Hahaha... the disparity of MN... I'm quids in.

Minimum wage went up.

poshme · 22/04/2022 08:29

@Cstring apparently it's so that all the pay systems can be changed for the threshold changes which they thought would take a month or 2 to sort out.

Isn't the NI rise ring fenced for the NHS? Do you have a link for this not being true? That really needs to be widely publicised

If Rishi is lying to us about that it's a lot more serious than downing Street parties

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/04/2022 08:33

Are benefits supposed to increase as well? Mine haven't, I get the old style tax credits. I know UC is supposed to go up but I don't know if tax credits will as well.

backinthebox · 22/04/2022 09:03

Yup. Happening all over the private sector too. I’m always baffled as to why this is considered a worse thing because a person is a public sector employee. I was pointing out that ‘no pay rise’ is not quite the same as ‘small pay rise,’ and that the declaration the public sector workers have not had a pay rise recently is not true. Financially, times are shit for lots of people. No one group has the monopoly on that.

Aposterhasnoname · 22/04/2022 09:10

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/04/2022 07:33

i believe so, if you are on low pay it will go up in July?

You’re right, anyone earning under £30,000 will pay less NI from July this year. Less in fact than then paid last year.

CottonSock · 22/04/2022 09:18

Well I'll be switching to paying for disney with tesco vouchers so I've saved a little money by clicking here.

My pay will increase very slightly due to the NI rise as I earn not much. I didn't actually realise until last week it wasn't being applied across the board. Must pay more attention

OddsandSods · 22/04/2022 10:10

I was £55 quid down. Not happy. Basically paying to sub rich pensioners children’s inheritance.

StrangeCondition · 22/04/2022 10:13

For the first time in a few years I'm actually happy with my pay slip today, 1.5% pay rise and a bonus of £1k. Just wish it was the same every month Sad

SpinningForVictory · 22/04/2022 10:22

The NI money may well be ring-fenced for the NHS but the government will give with one hand and take away with the other - it knows the funding of the various blocks of the NHS is complicated and that it's easy to call something 'new money' that really isn't because other money elsewhere is now being diverted.
