Washing pyjamas

Was just packing to go away and thought- people who wash PJs every day- what do you do on holiday? Do you take enough PJs for a new set every night on holiday? And take massive suitcases. Or do you spend your time washing?

And if you usually wash towels every day do you also do that on holiday?

(In my family we wear PJs for a week, unless very hot and sweaty, and use towels for a week too)

I couldn't wear something for 56 hours before washing it, especially under a warm duvet, especially if I was someone that didn't wear knickers under pyjamas (I'm not). Even in times before washing machines they washed their undergarments everyday or so. Do you not even hand wash them or air them in between washes? Or just neatly fold in the sweat, sebum and bacteria for later?

I put clean underwear on every day. Straight in the wash after 24h or less - whenever I take my next shower.

I don’t wash jeans after one wear because I had underwear on so there’s no need. I don’t wash hoodies after one wear because I had a vest or T-shirt underneath. Same with PJs.

Do people also wash their jeans or hoodies / thick jumpers after one wear?

I'm off out now to plant some tomatoes without gloves. Shock

Will you change your knickers before you go?

Same. We both shower every day. How dirty can they get? As for 34 towels in one day … We don’t even own that many towels.

Me neither 😆

Fresh pjs & towels every day? I can’t imagine what that would do for the electricity and water bills! I think the cost of living crisis will really hit this kind of lifestyle choice hard.

WrongWayApricot · 21/04/2022 16:09

@Cornettoninja it's unfathomable to me how it harms the environment to hang up your pyjamas to let them air at some point instead of folding up the item that has been against your skin for 8 hours in warm weather. Why is it shameful to point it out? It's factual. Don't fold up clothes that you've just taken off if you're going to wear them again. This isn't new information, that's how clothes have been treated for years and years before washing machines were in every home. Saving the planet doesn't mean don't care about your clothes or personal hygiene.

I said I couldn't go 7 nights with the same pyjamas, I haven't said they need to be washed everyday. Just asked if the people going 7 nights with unwashed pyjamas are at least airing then out or hand washing in between the 7 nights. I haven't got a direct answer but I guess you're all folding them. It is unpleasant to me to not even air them out I'm allowed to feel that way, we do produce sweat, sebum and bacteria. The pyjamas will be fresher not folded. It's not about shame it's about what is actually truthful.

@Pyri it shouldn't take long to hand wash 1 set of summer pyjamas.

WrongWayApricot · 21/04/2022 16:15

@EileenGC I don't disagree with any of that. Especially if the clothes are hung up after wearing. It's that pyjamas are close to the skin and often worn without underwear and we're presumably talking about a holiday either in summer or warmer climates. I wouldn't be comfortable wearing them 7 nights in those cases.

Cornettoninja · 21/04/2022 16:39

You probably haven’t had an answer because your reaction is already implied and there’s not much you could possibly say apart from some variation on ‘ewww’. Why would anyone set themselves up for that?

I'm allowed to feel that way, we do produce sweat, sebum and bacteria. The pyjamas will be fresher not folded. It's not about shame it's about what is actually truthful

We all produce sweat etc. that is indeed a fact, but the ‘freshness’ vs dirtiness of said pj’s is a matter of opinion.

You referenced hand washing, it’s still washing. I haven’t made any comment on airing or folding because frankly I don’t care and have never felt the need to ruminate on it, either for myself or anyone else.

You carry on if it makes you happy and I’ll carry on taking the environmental impact of over washing for no good reason into consideration.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 21/04/2022 18:43

I got into the habit of fresh pyjamas every night during the disgusting pregnancy and post-partum phase. I’m trying to correct myself for environmental reasons but it’s really hard as now I think worn = dirty when I know that’s not the case at all.

But 34 towels in a week?!

AngelaRayner4PM · 21/04/2022 19:04

I don't wear a new pair every night, but not far off. I would bring enough for every other night on holiday.

There should have been a Shock face with that.

No gloves!!!

I don't hang my PJs up, nor do I fold them up.

The bacteria, sebum and sweat festers on them on the top of the (Unironed) duvet cover where I plonk them.

I still can't imagine taking loads of PJs on holiday, or washing them whilst away.
Partly as with winter holidays I'd have to take a massive suitcase.

Maireas · 21/04/2022 19:38

@Nelliephant1

I only book places that have laundry facilities, nothing worse than coming home with a case of dirty washing. Also wouldn't wear pjs or use towels for a week. I've just finished folding 34 towels from the last towel wash that was done on Sunday and there's another pile in the machine as we speak. 😄
Is that a typo? 34 towels? How many loads was that? It must have taken hours.
Maireas · 21/04/2022 19:39

It depends on the holiday - where are you going and what kind of place are you staying in?

ReadyToMoveIt · 21/04/2022 19:40

well… you don’t have to imagine it. If you have no plans to do it then there’s no need to try to imagine it.
We change pyjamas every other day. We take enough pyjamas for every other day. We don’t go on winter holidays, so that’s not a concern.
everyone is different 🤷🏻‍♀️

HippeePrincess · 21/04/2022 20:47

There is no way pyjamas worn by adults in bed all night for a week don't stink, my skin is itching just thinking about that.
Only children in our house wear PJ's and they wear them twice, so we pack accordingly, if it was longer than a week we dont have enough so we'd have to be somewhere that had laundry facilities or they could wear pants and t shirts.

I mean, no one is suggesting taking them to the river and bashing them with a stone. Just putting them in a washing machine Grin

declutteringmymind · 21/04/2022 20:54

I take vests and shorts sets with a thin dressing gown that I take off before I get into bed.

Nsky62 · 21/04/2022 20:55

Only take one set, stay with family tho

Blossomtoes · 21/04/2022 20:56

There aren’t many washing machines in hotels @ReadyToMoveIt. And I’m most definitely not doing bloody laundry on holiday, it’s bad enough at home.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/04/2022 20:57

I am going away for 9 nights and am taking 3 pairs of pyjamas. Normally I change them every 2 nights but I can slum it on holiday!

Nsky62 · 21/04/2022 20:57

I rarely wear in bed tho, normally when I get up!

No idea, we can’t afford to stay in hotels. Our camp site usually has a laundrette.

ImInStealthMode · 21/04/2022 21:13

I wear PJs for approximately a week.

I wear knickers under them (changed daily) and prefer a style with a vest top (so no armpits to get sweaty). Shower first thing in the morning. Not a particularly sweaty sleeper anyway.

I'm not dead yet, skin has not shedded off in flakes. No signs of fungus.

Honestly the planet is absolutely fucked already, without washing PJs every day and every towel each time you've dried your (by definition as clean as it will ever be) body on it Confused
