I just watched the film version of Jesus Christ Superstar for the first time and it's FABULOUS!

It's intensely 70s, camp, Jesus is a tiny wee poppet of a man, and the songs are just great. It's free on Prime and has cheered me right up. I'm not religious btw and don't even normally like musicals but this was brilliant!

One of my all time favourite films. I will get ds and Dh to watch with me tomorrow I think.

lljkk · 16/04/2022 20:42

I also love this, it's a soundtrack from my childhood. Me & my cousins used to sing the songs. Nostalgic AF - my mother dragged my elderly very religious grandparents to see it live on stage.

Never thought of it as Camp before, or very 70s. I will try to look for those things maybe.

SuperPug · 16/04/2022 20:50

It’s absolutely brilliant.
Carl Anderson (Judas) is incredible in it and sadly died at a fairly young age.

Yep - it’s fab!

Love that version

Definitely 70s

Twizbe · 16/04/2022 21:13

I watched that version for the first time yesterday too. Really enjoyed it.

My 3 year old loves 'try not to get worried' we sing it most nights and it helps calm her if she's having a tantrum. I introduced her to a few of the other songs too. She really wants to watch the whole thing but I've explained to her that the end isn't suitable for her yet.

We really like the Melanie C version too.

Trulyweird1 · 16/04/2022 21:22

Fab movie, Yvonne Elliman was just great, think it really made her name. Soundtrack of my childhood. My parents played the album endlessly.

Saw a stage version a few years back, just loved it.

LuvMyBoyz · 16/04/2022 21:27

I learned all the words to the whole soundtrack. Nearest thing I ever got to being religious. It’s bloody brilliant!

MissyB1 · 17/04/2022 08:24

@PangolinPie what channel did you find it on?

PaperTyger · 17/04/2022 08:24

Yes it's utterly fabulous! Amazing and the angel's at the end!!
Love the soundtrack I always try And play the soundtrack at Easter

PangolinPie · 17/04/2022 08:28

I saw it for the first time at boarding school in the 70’s. Was a po-faced, religious maniac at the time and walked out with my catholic “best” friend ( we were 12, it was complicated).
Love it now though, looking forward to watching it on Netflix later.
Happy Easter Everyone!

PangolinPie · 17/04/2022 08:29

Oops sorry, @MissyB1 it's on Prime.

Gethsemane is amazing

PangolinPie · 17/04/2022 08:31

And yes, I do believe that roman soldiers in hot pink sleeveless t's and Pontius Pilate in a purple crushed velvet cape is a teeny bit camp Grin

IncompleteSenten · 17/04/2022 08:32

It's my favourite too. I love everything about it

PangolinPie · 17/04/2022 08:32

That's before the fabulousness of Herod even gets there, who clearly dropped in straight from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

PAFMO · 17/04/2022 08:33

For some bizarre reason none of us can remember it was one of about 3 LPs we had at university in the 80s and we used to get pissed and sing along to it whether it was Easter or not.

I'll leave you with an Eats, Shoots, Leaves conundrum which amused us then.

Yvonne Elliman: "I've had so many men before, in oh so many ways, he's just one more"

Does she mean:
A) she's had them on the dining table, swinging from the chandeliers and on the local merry-go-round
B) He's just the same as all the others

We all rather hoped it was A (Joy of Sex Nazareth style- they all had the beards after all) but fear it may just have been B.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 17/04/2022 08:36

And what exactly do you mean by “70’s”??? Are you LAUGHING and POINTING??? Don’t you know that for those of us who were young in the 70s this was the height of hippy cool?

I could recite/sing the whole thing end to end. Fabulous piece of work.

nomistake · 17/04/2022 08:37

Oh the songs are just!! Everything's alright is something I have sung to my kids since they were babies. They love it now too

Ragwort · 17/04/2022 08:38

Never seen the film but will look out for it, went to see the original stage production in the 1970s as a teenager and loved it.

PangolinPie · 17/04/2022 08:39

It is the absolute epitome of ALL THAT IS AMAZING about the 70s so not laughing and pointing (ok not pointing) but I genuinely loved it and it made my day. Me and my friend are going to make a point of watching every year now.

SilverPeacock · 17/04/2022 08:39

I love it. The music is great. I might watch it now you mention it.

PangolinPie · 17/04/2022 08:41

It made me wish very hard I could sing, and Jesus' rock scream is 🤌
